Had LASIK done back in 2000. Best thing ever done!!! The eyesight has changed a bit since that time but that is natural because of aging.

Best thing other than getting my eyesight back is........

THE FOLLOW UP EXAMS WERE ALL DONE AND STILL BEING DONE BY THE HOTTEST INDIAN OPTOMETRIST IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA!!!!! MY GOD IS SHE GORGEOUS!!!!

Same as above, with the exception of the hot Indian Optometrist. An opthamologist actually performs the surgery.

I went to VisionQuest on Maple Avenue in Vienna on a referral from two friends. No regrets.

They say you may have to go back for followup surgery in 5 years as the vision regresses after the initial operation. Dry eye is also very common. Everyone I know who has had it seems to have positive feedback.

http://www.lasikvisioninstitute.com/

I got it in 2002 after reported success from 3 people I know. Since that was 10 years ago my vision degraded some, normal with age.

I have a follow up surgery with them this Friday. I recommend these guys, best bang for the buck, good results, and decent docs. They recently moved back to Tyson's.

Tysons Corner has a great one- on rt 7 but don't recall the name. Piece of advice- get the last appt of the day. Your eyes will feel gritty after and sting. All you will want to do is keep your eyes closed and go to sleep. So, last appt, go home, take tylonol pm, go to bed. Next morning, put in moist drops and you'll feel 90% better!!

I had LASIK on both eyes in 1996 and haven't had any problems since.

I had both eyes done about 10 years ago at LasikPlus in Old Town Alexandria. Took my vision back to 20/10. I'm now at 20/20 and have had no issues. Back then, the cost was $1300/eye (becaue of an astigmatism) plus I paid an extra $200/eye for the lifetime plan. One of the best things I've ever done. Go for it!

Is it true, though, that you have to get reading glasses after the surgery? I have a friend who had it and he hates it and has to use reading glasses to see anything up close.

What was the lifetime plan? If they ever needed to re-touch?

Yes, lifetime plan covers any future surgery. The only stipulation is that you must be able to show that you went for your annual exams.

As for reading glasses, my doctor told me I'll be needing them - everyone will. I didn't know this, but the surgery only fixes distance vision. Some people get only one eye done and that seems to help with being able to cover both distance and up-close vision, but I'm not sure about the details.

My doctor explained that at about age 40, your cornea starts to harden and that's when you'll slowly start to have problems with up-close vision. Of course, I'm terrible at explaining all this, but your doctor or lasik surgeon will make it all easy to understand.

Check it out.

What's the going rate for laskik nowadays? $1300 per eye seems low.

When I had Lasik at about age 47 I was nearsighted but had recently begun using bifocals. I had Lasik and left the clinic being farsighted. The docs told me that "at some point I would likely need reading glasses." What they didn't say is that I would need reading glasses immediately following my procedure.

It is NOT easy changing your vision when it requires different types of glasses. I now wear bifocals with very mild vision correction with reading glasses. I absolutely hated making the transition. I was very comfortable with being nearsighted and years later I still have difficulty reading things close up.

There are times it is nice not having to wear glasses when outdoors and yes I have met the gold standard for laser eye surgery - I can read my alarm clock without glasses. But, even now I wish I had the money and my old vision.

Not sure about the going rate, but I would think it would be cheaper now, not more expensive. I also think it depends on who does the job. LasikPlus is a nationwide chain. Some would probably prefer going to a superstar eye doctor. I chose LasikPlus based on a reference from a friend. Research a few places, maybe check Yelp or Google for reviews.

Many patients are happy with the results after Lasik, some are disappointed, and a few suffer catastrophes. Comedian Kathy Griffin has blogged about her horrible experience:

Keep in mind that Lasik is actual, irreversible surgery in which tissue is removed.

The FDA has a detailed web site about Lasik:

One FDA official who helped approve Lasik says he has changed his mind:

This is a psychologist who has treated suicidal Lasik patients:

Wrong link above to former FDA official who has turned against Lasik. Try this:

Mine was done at new view laser eye in Reston on, of all dates, 9/11/01. My results were flawless, painless, and I still see perfectly to this day.

I was a bit nervous going into the surgery, but two Xanax fixed that. I recall the entire event as happening so fast that I did not believe that anything actually occurred. I don't recall anything after that, including coming home. I woke up in bed about 9 PM when the doctor called me to see if all was OK (if was).

I think I am a bit farsighted now with age (at 53), but my distant vision is still perfect. I don't spend much (any) time reading phone books or that horrible thing called the Washington Post, so if I am farsighted, it's not an issue.

I will still never forget that first time after LASIK of being able to see individual leaves on trees. Simple thing, but amazing all the same.

I'm an old guy (53) and had my Lasik done 6 years ago at Millennium by the guy who did Tiger Woods, Holtzman. (Yes, he really was there during the operation.) I was outside the normally recommended range, but the procedure went just fine. I was 20/200 and became 20/20. My need for eye drops diminished after a year or so to a drop or two first thing in the morning.

You could try Liberty Laser Eye Center. Seems like they got really good reviews on Yelp: http://www.yelp.com/biz/liberty-laser-eye-center-vienna. And Here's their website:http://www.libertylasereye.com/

I had it done about 8 years ago, no problem at all, never needed drops. I opted for "mono" which is one eye for distance and one for reading. I'm 57 now, I'm 20/20 distance and still read without glasses. You can get some distance out of the reading eye, say 20/60 or so, in other words you can customize to your preference.

I highly recommend it, just go to a doctor that has done a lot of them, like in the thousands.

Only about 20% of the people who have the procedure done end up permanently blind. Go for it!

I LOVE IT, and really, the feeling of having sand in your eyes for years afterwords is but a small price to pay.

Carry around contacts or carry around eye drops because your are so fucking dry all the time.
