Bill Introduced for No Front VA License Plate

Virginia drivers may soon find themselves sporting just one license plate rather than two, all in an effort by the state government to save a few dollars.

State Sen. Frank Wagner (R-Virginia Beach) has introduced legislation reducing the number of license plates furnished by the Department of Motor Vehicles to vehicle owners from two to one, and requiring the single license plate to be attached to the rear of the vehicle.

The measure is similar to one introduced by state Sen. Mamie Locke (D-Newport News) in the 2012 session. Her bill was held for consideration in 2013.

About a dozen states, including West Virginia and North Carolina, require just a single license plate on vehicles, while remaining states require two.

The Virginia Department of Planning Budget estimated that Locke’s bill would result in a savings of $2.3 million a year if the state government did not need to turn out two plates for each vehicle. The implementation cost of the measure was estimated at a relatively paltry $13,000 in one-time costs.

Virginia license plates are produced by inmates in the Powhatan Correctional Center as part of Virginia Correctional Enterprises, a state-run workshop program that turns out everything from eyewear and apparel to business cards and dentures.

Mother of god that would be awesome. Like many, I want to replace the front bumper on my wrangelr with a bumper with an integrated winch...and there is almost no good way to put on a front license plate with such a setup. There are some fairlead mounting bracket options, but it is then very easy to steal the plate.

he means the aftermarket plate assembly.

easier to yank the whole aftermarket one off a car instead of sit there and unscrew a plate off of a regular plate assembly, y'know?

Another step towards not be able to identify a car at a crime scene.

There's a reason VA went from a one license plate state to a two license plate state and that was when cars were a lot slower and easier to identify.

Let the "criminalation" of VA continue.

"Another" step? What were the prior steps?

How often has a front plate been used for such purposes?

both Kentucky and Tennessee don't require front plates like VA does. What I hated about VA and Fairfax in general were the state inspections and emissions. I just bought a new car in TN where there s no state inspection, no property tax (even if I had to pay it which I don't because I am military it's like $33), and only one license plate. I drove up to VA a couple weeks ago and forgot about how much of a pain in the ass it was to own in a vehicle in VA, Fairfax in particular.

It wouldnt certainly cut down on the $.02 an hour we pay the inmates to make them. I dont know how many cars there are in VA but if you cut in half the number of plates to be made that should be some savings.

I had a Vette for years and no one with a Vette runs a front plate. Ruins the entire appearence of the car. I think I got 4 or 5 tickets in about 8 years.

Of course this will probably pass now since I dont have that car!

What purpose does it serve for fucks sake? You get hit and the idiot runs away...you going to look at the front of his car or rear? A cop is in pursuit....well unless the perp is driving 100mph in reverse (Which no Virginian has the skill to do so...) The cop is running the tags from the rear. A redlight camera...oh yeh...takes pictures of your rear plate. I flip you off for driving like a moron. You get butt hurt and look directly where? My rear plate as I am smoking past you!

If your a real man and car enthusiast you want the least of amount of shit defacing your vehicle, especially a ugly plate on the front ruining that beautiful face.

Which takes me to the next topic...

Vanity Plates. Everybody loves them if they opt to want a plate on the front. Put your personality on your car, or rep your car club, etc.

Hopefully this state listens to it's senators and follows through with saving tax dollars and keeping those hideous plates of the front of many precious vehicles.

Hands down. Suck my dick Virginia and it's residents. Yall bitches. I'm out.

Real men drive cars not idolize them. Only fags love cars. It's just tranportation for a mature man. I guess if you can't get a woman and live at home with your parents the only thing going for you is a car.

Purpose? Radar reflection...which is why cops like front plates.

Personally, I hope the law changes...because I have a Jeep and have been planning on repalcing the front bumper with one that has an integrated winch and there is no great way to mount the plate in such configurations...at least without rigging something up.

The cops'll be against it. They have those cameras on their cars now that can read plates and run them through the computer while they drive past you. Those are set up to see the front plates, from what I can tell. Interesting to see if the bill gets any traction.

For most of them you can get a mount that clips onto the fairlead.

Even for the hawse-type mounts that are just a slit.

No way they'll go to two tags, they'll just pass the cost of producing the second one on to the vehicle owner.
What they really, really ought to do though is to get rid of the DAMN UGLY font used on the VA plates. Look at it. It looks like something from the 50's or earlier. Ugly, ugly, ugly...

Can you believe that VA came out with the standard blue on white plates in 1973, and they started going to the yearly stickers instead of new plates every year? Except for the Jamestown 400 anniversary when they had the Jamestown plates with VA in red (2002 - 2007)

Every year before that, you got new plates every year. I think they had to be on the car by March 31 (It may have been March 1). Odd years were white with black lettering and even years were black with white lettering.

Pennsylvania and Delaware are also states that doesn't use front plates. It doesn't seem to cause any particular problems, except that it makes it harder for cops with laser speed guns to aim them at a flat reflective surface.

Finally, a useful bill to be introduced! The savings will be passed on to VA taxpayers and the Fairfax pigs will have a harder time doing the only "law enforcement" task they are capable of... Radar.

If only we could be like Texas and raise the speed limit to something practical.

Options: ReplyQuote
Re: Bill Introduced for No Front VA License Plate

The 70 MPH speed limits are practical. Texas only has a handful of 80 and a single 85 MPH speed limit road and the latter is a private toll road/highway. We finally got 70 MPH a few years back, which is quite swell. The only downside is that reckless is still on the boxs as 80+ .. so 10-11 MPH over 70 is still considered reckless. Seems like that should be changed.

Also, a bunch of roads around here need to be adjusted for the 85 percent rule. I too am tired of all these slow speed limits. They don't all need to be > 70 MPH but a bunch of roads do need to be raised 5-15 MPH.

I was talking to a former state legislature and she happened to mention this topic from when it was previously introduced. She said it sounded like a reasonable idea and she had nothing against it. But then immediately the State Police jumped all over it as if it would mean the end of law and order in society. They lobbied hard and heavy. Basically all the police groups have a lobbying presence in Richmond and don't hesitate to show their muscle when something like this comes up.

You need to write your legislators and if possible talk to them and encourage them to vote for this and ignore the whining police. Fortunately the Va state legislators are not tied to the party to the same extent as national politics. If it is something they think their constituents want, they might vote for it. Theoretically it would be possible to get this through by first approaching each member of the transportation committee.

Originally I was slightly in favor of this. It seems the main advantages to having a front plate are so that the parking enforcement police don't have to walk around to the back in order to write a ticket and with two plates it is easier for them to identify a vehicle for red light camera tickets.

Then someone pointed out to me that if you have two plates and one is stolen you can usually move the remaining plate to the back and drive around without getting hassled until the new plate arrives. If you only have one you are much more likely to be pulled over by the cops while waiting for your new plates. Maybe they can get around this by having a paper one that you print off the internet and use, but still.

Huh? How many plates have you had stolen? Do you know anyone who has had one stolen? This is such a petty reason to make everyone in the state have 2 plates.

I've never lost one, but I do know several people who have. Originally it was people who had "cool" personal plates and you figure some kid stole it just like they will steal street signs. More recently the guess has been they are stolen for use on unregistered cars. I've also known people who have had the annual renewal stickers peeled off their plates, probably for the same reason.

I traded in my 2008 Mercedes with 172,000 miles on it. 5 years of ownership. I never put the front tag on it. The last day that I had it I was in DC at a school and had an appointment to drive to Tyson's Corner to pick up a new car. Literally the school was my last stop before driving to Tyson's.

A DC "Meter Maid" was writing up a ticket for no front tags on a Virginia vehicle! Can you believe it? 171,000 miles and 5 years of driving; no one says a word to me, and I get a ticket, Out of State, for not complying to a debatable, questionable law.

You know why this'll never fly? I don't know if someone said this already --- many cop cars have 4 way tag-readers that automatically scan all plates on cars that the cruiser is around. If the tag picks up a stolen vehicle or expired plates it will alert the officer via his computer automatically.

If you don't know what I'm talking about they look like four cameras pointed out at 45 degrees at each corner of the cruiser. State police have them and so do FCPD and PWC.

I have tried in Minnesota to get single plates for passenger vehicles but every time i try and get a senator or house member to take it up they say the police wont go along with it,I don't know where they learned about Government but bills aren't to be run by the cops first they only enforce the laws that are passed, the funny thing here is if you have pioneer or collector plates you only need one even if you have a spot for a front one in your valance if you have a newer collector car say only 20 years old with the bolt on bracket say on a 83 cutlass you have to display two plates.Makes no sense. Then we have winter you pull into work close to a thawing snow bank that freezes while your at work, when you leave you back up unknowingly leaving your plate behind and getting a ticket for 100.00 plus new bracket and lost plate fee and go to court, taking time off from work to show them you now again comply and hope the dismiss or reduce the ticket. What a scam(but then again Dayton is our Gov).looks like an Addams family relative and cant talk.I wish you well in your State but we must face the fact that our police and state troopers are dumber than the ones in the 19 states that only have one plate,i.e. they have a criminal justice degree and they pull people over in the winters of Minnesota I usually take my time don't open window fast look for my license can't find that damn insurance card it's here somewhere hang on as iv'e got the heat blasting and he's standing outside in 20 below zero weather there's a real genius for you,oh and then they get hit because every one jams on there brakes and spin out on our roads because the envirmentalists wont let us use salt because of some damn creature might get harmed..... ya tell that to the kids who lost their Father but the creature is he o.k., oh thank God, wait we don't believe in that.Good luck
Liberalism it doesn't make sense,if you stop and think about it and that's the thing they don't think.....that would be too hard

While the post above is almost a year old, I've heard of this happening mutiple times. Here's the explanation of why they issue the ticket:

The District of Columbia has a law requiring all vehicles to display front and rear license plates, but the law contains an exception for those states that issue only a rear plate. Meter maids have a list of the states that issue only a single plate. If you have only one plate on your car, and your car is not from one of those states, they will give you a ticket for failing to comply with their law requiring two plates.

DC will pick on the smallest things. I know someone who was ticketed for "improper display of a license plate" because he put the "Month" and "Year" stickers on the wrong sides of his Virginia plate (example: reading from left to right, if your plate expired this month it'd say "OCT 15," but his said "15 OCT"). Now, if he were one of those idiots who alternates the stickers each year so you can't see the month, or if he put both "year" stickers on the rear plate, I'd understand the ticket. Either of those things prevents the cop from knowing when the expiration date is unless he runs the plate. But simply putting the stickers on the wrong corners is no big deal at all. I suppose, though, with DC almost anything goes. It IS the city that stopped issuing license-plate decals and then started issuing tickets to residents who didn't have updated decals on their plates!
