Is Old Country Buffet in Fairfax any good?

I think it depends on what you mean by good. If good is freshly prepared, high quality food served in a relaxing environment by an attentive wait staff, then no. If, on the other hand, good is a lot of fried food served with plenty of gravy, steam tables of vegetables and the ambiance of a truck stop, then yes.

We have gone there a few times, especially on a Friday during Lent and it wasn't the worst food that I ever had, but you can do a lot better for the money IMO.

We go to the movie theater a few feet away (which may mean the theater is in a different neighborhood). It is always fun to watch the fat people waddle out of Old Country.

I used to go there a lot with my grandparents. I loved it. But I haven't been in about 8 years.

Mike Sorce hit the nail on the head.

When I was fresh outta college and didn't have much money (or a clue about dining), me and my friends would go to Olde Country Buffet and loved it. Lotsa meat and starches, and heavily fried bland stuff. When you're broke and not trying to impress anyone, it's passable. But if you're looking for a good place to eat, avoid it at all costs. The theme of this place is "gorging on the cheapest food possible".

I really think the only buffets worth going to are indian buffets. That, and that Sgt. Peppers place that used to be in Fair Lakes and Reston years ago (soup and salad place that was really worth it).

Genevieve and I miss Sgt Pepper deeply. Great food that was not bad for you.

It was called fresh fare when I was a kid, but it was the exact same thing.

If you like the meats, Great American in Manassas is by far the best. Tops Old COuntry and Golden Coral any day. Its across the street from Manassas Mall

Went to an OCB in Tappahanok after church on a Sunday a few years ago and the place was packed with fat people. Other than my family, there were no thin people around. At 11:30 AM people were stuffing baked potatos with sour cream and bacon (the bacon making it acceptable breakfast food) waffles, sausages, and cheese grits through their bloated lips at a frenzied pace. Definately a place to recruite for overeaters annon.

Anyway, when noon came, the crew started changing the buffet to "lunch" and the fattiods all quickly waddled back to now get their after breakfast meal. They went for cheeseburgers, lasagna, french fries, etc. and then I saw several going to the desert table multiple times. Interesting, they all had smiles on their faces when food was put in front of it. I made that comment to my wife that they were all "happy" when food was involved.

So, I take my family (never again) to Olive Garden and am told "all you can eat bread and salad" (Blue cheese dressing, not offered) comes with the meal. I look around, and it is all fat people at Olive Garden, just a slightly higher class tubbies than OCB. These fat people were chowing down on bread with olive oil and butter, waiting for their heavily saused meal to arrive. They too were all smiling as long as they could see, touch, and consume food, and had a very pleased look on their face as they left, toting their bag of bread.

So, if you want to become fat, go to OCB.

Sure, you can lard on on cheesy potatoes, spaghetti, and pizza. The also have grilled meats, steamed vegetables, fresh fruit and a great salad bar. You can eat healthily, and like king there. I recommend it to an athlete, bodybuilder or manual laborer who needs to seriously refuel his body.

If you like copious amounts of low quality fare, seasoned with the phlegm and feces from the food handlers, and love eating in an enviroment of grotesque gluttony, Old Country is just perfect.

Go to Peter Pan in Fairfax Circle. That is actually a pretty good Chinese Buffet.

Define good. There is a lot of variety and it's reasonably priced. It seems to be a hit with older people, kids and big eaters. We used to go a few times a year. But the last couple of times we went we saw a couple of questionable characters at the buffet line. One guy was dirty and talking to himself. Never went back.

My brother did research on buffet style eateries.

The results were a big blow to my appetite.

93% of serving utensils at all places tested, had feces on the handles.

Strangely no food was found to be contaminated with anything other than occasional human hairs and even cat and dog hair.

I still eat at the Country Buffet once in a while, but mostly just stuff that is pre-dished.

Golden Coral is another good buffet, but I don't eat enough to make that worthwhile anymore.
