They were homes down there but at some point between the 80's and 90's it seems to have been converted into a sort of junkyard/impound/storage lot. Some of the homes off of Marseilles are are very old especially the one where the road turns. Jermantown Road extended down straight through that turn up until I-66 was built.

Some boarded up buildings (3 houses and a gas station\garage along with a barn) some marked with graffiti, a rather long field at the end of it with some concrete stuff.

....would be my best guess. It's illegal to park on phoenix, but theoretically one COULD park in the neighborhood on the other side of the area.

just sayin'.

This is an old workyard that was the headquarters of Phoenix Development Company in the 70's and 80's--hence the name. They did clearing and prep work for development compamnies.

I live in the area behind Phoenix Dr so very familiar with what is going on there. The parcels was leased to Craig Van Lines for a long time, but the owner sold to a RE developer few years back. The developer is now working with Fairfax County to subdivide the land and build homes.

I've always wondered about this property, and find it interesting to see that others are too!

My first thought upon seeing it was to think about how great of a site that would be for Fairfax County to establish another community garden. There's not really many options in Fairfax, and I'm sure that there are a ton of people who would be interested in renting a piece of land there.

Sad to hear that someone owns it and is going to develop on it. All I can picture are those mini McMansions that are up the road from there. Big homes that have no trees around them, and just look like big blocks rising out of the ground... no character at all. Such promise...

We walked through there on a rainy Saturday a couple of months ago. Not too much to comment on. We peeked through most of the buildings, lots of graffiti. But when we got to the brick rambler/house it got a little weird. There was a tent set up in the weeds that appeared to be in use; tent strung tight, fresh litter, and the the surrounding weeds it were trampled down. It was on the right side of the house. An odd place for camping.

We stood and looked at it from inside the carport for a couple of minutes. Though there was no movement we could see, it was comforting to have my sidearm as we backed away and headed towards the car.

The End

@Gordon Blvd

Yeah, of course it was comforting to have a sidearm, Gordon. I wouldn't go in a place like that without a sidearm. You think I'm crazy?

It's not like I was there stealing the sign to Oakton Road to put in Lizzie's yard. I just didn't want to be defenseless if we were suddenly bum-rushed by a crazed crust punk.

Most of the time, urban exploration involves a little trespassing.

My apology. Sheesh.

Anyway, then we took the sidearm to the mall.

nobody needs to apologize to me for shit

I'm just saying that if yr carrying a firearm, you better know how AND WHEN to fucking use it

and if yr trespassing on private property you have NO IDEA who has permission to be on......................whelp, that's not really the time, dumbass.

FUCK that mentality you are carrying if yr serious about that shit.

I understand your point of view. I am trained and confident with the weapon. I am also statistically cautious. Thats why I chose a cold rainy day; odds were it would be deserted. In the end, no shots were fired.

But now you owe me an apology for name calling. You called me a dumbass. That's not nice. You know this.Manners count Gordon. They count.

So do you wanna hear the story of when I had sex on Lincoln's lap at the Memorial back in the 80's?

But geez, some old crazy coot comes at you and it's his cousin's property you blast him when you 've no business being there - I'm just saying that's the situation you could be facing. Sure yr in "danger" but you've no business being there in the first place so how's that "defending yrself"?

I have thought about driving over there, but haven't because of concern for safety. Yes, I also understand the trespassing thing, but from the looks of it it doesn't look like anyone owns it. I wouldn't go over there--or get out of the car--without some sense of security. No gun, and barely know how to shoot one, so that's out. Instead, I just ask questions and look from afar...

this spot is actually VERY interesting to explore. i love the graffitti and luckily, i didnt run into bums or tents or anything like that. but i do remember passing by here twice before, and of those 2 times, i saw a cop stationed there. for my 3rd time, no cop; thankfully.
But besides that, does anyone know of any other cool (abandoned) spots like this one to explore in the area?

I like to look on Phoenix and Marseille for deer. A cop stopped me and my friend once asking why we were on that road. Once we walked through that property. I don't remember it saying private. Anyway it gave me the creeps big time. We didn't go in any bldgs but noticed a tent or something near the house too. Really creepy. You couldn't pay me to go in there again. Never seen anyone in the Marseille house but haven't been in it. Looks like an interesting old home.

Well a quick Google street view search says the property is for sale under Sotheby Realty (according to the date in the photo, this was around August 2012)... Usually they are into high end homes in big $ locations, this is an odd listing for them...

went out to Fair Oaks mall to do a little shopping over the weekend and passed by this place on 66. Got off 66 and decided to go check it out. Drove down phoenix drive to this little dead end/cul-de-sac that opens up to the property. a sliding gate was locked in place, but there was room to drive around the gate on the right hand side of it, and there were relatively fresh tire tracks through the melting snow leftover from last weekend. looks pretty sketchy. next time i head out there i may try and park in one of the neighboring cul-de-sacs and walk over to investigate that thing that was mentioned earlier in the post, concrete formation that looks like it leads underground

If I recall correctly, there was a fire on this property back in '06 or '07. If you look carefully at the Bing maps view, there appears to be a round driveway off Marseilles for the house that was burned down.

I went there today, and it was pretty rad. A cop pulled up as soon as I started walking to the buildings, so I had to talk to him. Once he realized we werent doing anything bad there, he told us the cool buildings to check out and where a gray fox hides and told us to have fun. He also said just to be careful, because they've had a lot of bad shit go down back there. It is not illegal to be on the property, so you're not trespassing. But no one do any dumb shit back there and ruin that for all of us.

if the owner has posted "no trespassing" signs, then it's trespassing. if it's just a bunch of derelict buildings and there's no complaints, then not.

I explored this area yesterday as well... I think I was leaving just as @Bertnert was walking in. They spoke to the cop for a bit as I was packing up my camera, and then walked back into the area. I'm pretty surprised that the police are actually cooperative with people exploring the area. Could be a place for some pretty bad stuff going down.

I only explored the west side of the area... The first house, the garage, the station, the barn, and even walked down to the large concrete area to the far west. Definitely would like to explore the Marseilles house eventually. I even explored the woods between the property and St Augustine Ln, and found some pretty interesting things. Looks like they dumped the huge gas tanks from the station back there, along with the front end of an old Ford truck that has grown into the side of a tree. I collect old bottles, so I found some pretty cool beer bottles, along with an old RC Cola bottle.

I'm definitely interested in exploring the mysterious buildings toward the end of St Augustine as well!

I really wish I knew what this area looked like in its hayday. Wish I knew how to do proper research on this stuff!

Looks like some sort of storm water mitigation system. Water flows into the reservoir on the left and is slowed down by the walls, then flows under the road and collects in the that reservoir. Once the second reservoir is full it empties into the little waterways behind it, but at a much reduced volume and speed.

Cool forum. I just discovered Phoenix Drive this week. I rode my motorcycle down Phoenix Drive wondering what was down there and never realized what was there. There's no signs or anything saying private property or no trespassing. It's really only accessible by foot, bicycle or motorcycle once you get to the end of Phoenix Drive. I surprised about 50 deer just hanging out. I didn't see a tent or any evidence of people living there. I called my buddy who rode over on his moto and we explored the insides of the buildings. Creepy and smelled like somebody used part of one of the houses as their toilet. Seems like a good place to practice graffiti art if you're into that sort of thing as there was some good ones there. Looks more like a place where kids sneak off to go drink and smoke. Mildly creepy during the day, can't imagine what that place is like at night. My friend and I both felt like we were cast members of Sons of Anarchy about to meetup for a gun/drug deal.

I drive up and down Jermantown all the time, so it now makes me wonder whenever I see somebody turn down Phoenix Drive if they just made a wrong turn or if they're going down there for something else, because there is shit else down that road. Even when we were leaving, there was a car coming down Phoenix making wonder why the hell they made that turn.

Some dudes posted a drone flying through the place.

Isn't this where the local contractor stuff originated from? or was that all just a fucking joke?

Are there any current developments of this site?

Nope I've been there several times. One of the best places to explore in NOVA hands down.

after you’ve explored it once, what’s left to explore a second time?

Well for one there's a lot of interesting graffiti. Plus I'm always finding new things every time I show a friend around.

Anyone hear weird creepy noises before?? It sounded similar to an electric siren but coming from multiple directions. This was around 2am. It was kinda like an older alarm system noise maybe? but i feel like someone else would have heard it by now if it was old.

Moved to this area 6 years ago and I have heard 2 unexplained noises. First is the alarm like sound that you described. It doesn't always go off maybe once every 4 months or so.... and I notice it more in the winter months (maybe because the trees have less leaves so the sound can travel further). The sound is always at night or super early in the morning.

The second sounds like an electric transformer exploding or switching off....so more like a boom sound. Again, just happens from time to time so it makes me think it belongs to one of the independent houses.

Any ideas folks?

I grew up on this property. It was owned by my family for over 100 years.
In 2008 my parents did some awful things to my grandparents to get the property and their money

I'd bet there's a plume of gasoline and diesel fuel under that property and it's holding up the subdivision.

On the other side of Windsong Drive is an underground high-pressure sewer line, too.

Plus a sound barrier needs to be built if any residential parcels are planned.

I have been to this property multiple times over the years and it's an odd property with a creepy feel to it, as others have noted. It's rare to have a large undeveloped piece of property like that in Northern Virginia. I bet the ground is contaminated and this is holding up development.

Have been wondering about this place for years. Always see it from 66. Surprised it's still there, want to explore it someday soon and take a few photos. Good info on this thread, thanks!

Looks like an LLC was set up to purchase numerous parcels at the end of Phoenix Drive from a Gardner Byrd. Each parcel sold for $1.5 million. Sales notes "duress" and "multi-parcel". The tax assesments seem to indicate the properties are no longer Phoenix Drive and are now Marseilles Dr.??? Maybe someone knows or can find out more.

Is this area going to be a new on ramp to route 66 west?

The ground is heavily contaminated, that is why it hasn't been developed yet. The cost of abating the contaminants nearly outweighs the cost of developing it.

For the record, the land hasn't entirely sold yet. 17 acres at 4.6 million right now. Cost of demolition, decontamination and redevelopment sits at around $600,000.

Does anyone know what it's contaminated with?

All the trees and scrub along Phoenix have been cleared for the I66 toll lane development. Remaining structures are now much more visible from the road.

About 24 years ago 66 was widened and in the area between 50 and 123. There were veins of a natural form of asbestos in the ground. Everyone working there had to wear a mask when the ground was excavated. I asked this when I was sitting in traffic one day to one of the workers next to the road. He stated it was all over that area including the Phoenix Dr area. This might be some of the contamination that is being asked of.

It appears the site has been knocked down and replaced with a neighborhood.
Kinda sucks, this area we live in is developing rapidly and almost every abandoned site I know of has been demolished and replaced.
