Most of you aren't aware of this but the Governor released his 2013 budget this week which shows 800 million dollars more state wide in transportation spending. That new 800 million dollars will come out of non-general funds, ie the fuels excise tax (currently 17.5 cents, anticipated to rise to 21 cents). Around NOVA this could be a good thing. There are a shit load of transportation problems around here that have no funding because the county and local residents have had to continue to bear a greater and greater burden on typical state public works every year.
Problem is, the extra 800 million is likely going to go for construction of the Outer Beltway, a 1.2 billion dollar toll road that will run from the economic powerhouse regions of manassas to no name Loudoun county near the intersection of Claiborne and Route 7. The road will not cross the potomac because Maryland doesnt want it regardless of the funding structure. So the road will end up serving no purpose, for only a couple hundred people that commute between PWC and the middle of Loudoun. But VDOT and McDonnell want it bad so they can say, look what we built!
The state doesnt want to build the orange line to fair lakes, which would cost approximately the same amount (assuming a special tax district at fair lakes). Instead they want to build another road to nowhere.
These are the same idiots who wrote a terrible terms with Fluor/Transurban which assures that the taxpayer will pick up any slack on the HOT lanes if it doesn't make the adequate amount of revenue annually... which right now it isnt.
How many more fuck ups with our money does this governor and VDOT have to do until people get fed up. Fairfax deserves transportation funding god damnit.

These Roads are always roads to nowhwere. Look at the Fairfax County Parkway. Where does that go? From 95 to Route 7.
Sounds like the new road will go from 66 to Route 7. It will take a lot of pressure off of 28 too, which, despite going from nowhere (Manassas) to Route 7, is massively packed most of the time.

He might just raid the State pension fund again. After all, he stole $600 million to "balance the budget without raising taxes".

The first Transurban agreement was signed by Tim Kaine- 495. 95 was signed by current governor. What makes me mad is the fact that its a private road but VDOT has to take care of all the snow removaland other maint items.
Why spend our tax dollars to maintain a private road. Didn't do it on the Greenway.

Increase in gas tax won't fund projects in NOVA, it will fund projects in the Hampton Roads area and Richmond.
