How did Pope's Head Road get its nameand what is the history (if any) of the road. Did it have to do with General Pope( US Civil War), the Pope or something else?

I think there is already a thread on the history followed by a creepy story of a woman who got into car accident on the road in 30's.

My Grand father was Bob Pope. He used to live near the lowest dip in the road, near the creek part of Popes head rd. Back in the day he used to take his dates down there for pick-nics. His friends usd to laugh about it and decided to call it Popes head rd. I guess the name just stuck!

Wrong. The term "pope's head" was used in the past describe a shape that resembled the Pope's hat in rivers and other waterways. Also used to a lesser extent to describe paint brush heads. The creek, today known as Pope's Head Creek, made that shape so early settlers named the river as such. The name stuck and was eventually used to name the road that crosses Pope's Head Creek.

Whoops, turn out I'm stupid. I meant to say the term "pope's head" was used to describe paint brush heads, and occasionally used to describe waterways. The creek got it's name from the paint brush.

It was an intersection in London that was continually congested. Whomever named the road decided to continue the tradition.

Little known fact that Popes Head Rd once was known as Given Head Rd, but around 1879 police got fed up with the amount of gay activity on that stretch of highway. So, they decided to rename it.

I have been here my whole life and can tell you that the road name has changed a few times. It was most recently changed to "Pope's Head" in 2005 after the death of John Paul II, because they buried his head on the side of the road after it rotted and fell of a pike it had been diplayed on.

The truth is the Pope of Vatican, Italy was walking down the road and decided to rest his head. The rest is history.

You're All Wrong. Before Virginia was colonized, the indigenous Indian group called the Popeheada Tribe lived on this land. Hence the name Pope's Head.

Popes Head Rd - named after the creek - which is the Popes Head (start) of the Bull Run - named after the Civil War General

"One of Bull Run's tributaries is Popes Head Creek, a stream whose strange name, possibly taken from a street name in London, 1 first appeared in the Northern Neck Grants in 1710. Present-day Fairfax County still lay within the boundaries of Stafford County, and Englishmen were eagerly taking up lands on what was then the frontier."
