I'm guessing at least a couple other people have cox dvr...

i noticed on one of menus or whatever you can apparently export recorded programs to a VHS. first of all, who the hell uses VCRs anymore...

Second, does anyone know how to export programs to a computer? specifially an imac

I've never used Cox's DVR service but I wouldn't be surprised if it's similar to DTV's. The record to VCR option doesn't limit you to just a VCR of course. If your computer has a video capture card, you can use it to record your programs. If Cox's DVR service is truely similar to DTV's, you will be unable to simply copy recorded programs from your DVR to your computer as 1) the feature will be disabled and 2) the ability to take advantage of a USB nic will also be disabled. But I'm not entirely sure about any of that as I don't use their DVR service. Anyone out there who actually has used the service?

I use their service, but I have never tried to copy anything from the DVR box. I do have a computer that has a VIVO card, but not hooked up to the DVR, nor do I have the proper S-video cable to hook it up. I would think that it would be more difficult to get the sound transferred over to your CPU rather than just video.

You are pretty limited with an imac. Yes, you could get an external capture device (like the Formac Studio) but it will be expensive. Plus it will be time consuming to move all of those saved shows over.

If you really want your shows on your imac, it probably makes more sense to ditch the DVR and use the imac as a PVR. It would cost about the same amount as buying an external capture device.

hmmm so its possible and easy to move recorded shows to a VHS, but almost impossible/really hard/expensive to move that digital media to a damn computer? well thats just not fair is it

Well if you had a PC to begin with a capture card is pretty cheap. Either way, using the "proper" method to record your movies off of the DVR it'll take exactly how ever much time that show is. If your DVR is hackable then you might want to do that. But I haven't done any research on the cox DVR. Do a google search on cox DVR's and see if they're hackable. Search on make and model#, you're bound to find something. The most efficient way to get movies off of a cox/dtv/tivo DVR would be to hack it, and copy and decode the movies. Hopefully it won't be like the most recent DTV DVR's which are unhackable without replacing the ROM chip.

Trogdor the Burninator,
considering the nature of the inquiry, i dont think this guy is up to disassembling the unit or playing around with tv tuner cards. also, almost nobody actually uses a true EPROM chip (write once) but rather flash memory as it's cheaper and upgradable. in short, you should be able to rewrite to the chip without needing to extract it but use some careful wire connections. if all else fails, buy a DVR that does what you want.

It sounds like a pretty good service, as this new DVR technology is amazing, especially if I can record it to VHS. Anyone know what they charge a month?
