Are there other parents out there that just found out today that due to budget cuts summer school transportation will not be provided? My child is expected to walk 5 miles to another school for pick up in the morning and afternoon. The budget cut situation is really beginning to be detrimental to the excellence of the Fairfax County School system.

If she is LD, then the county is obligated by Federal law to make accommodations, such as providing transportation to special schools. You should bring this up with the school administrators (see, I am being helpful).

It depends on the program. I start driving summer school this Wednesday the 9th.
We have a meeting where we receive our summer runs and there were DOZENS of drivers there.

I just read your re-read your post. If your kid is being picked up at a school, (called a depot stop), then that's nothing new. Summer school stops have never been like regular school year stops.

They may have spread them out a bit further this summer, though.

The advice that you are given is to lighten up. What you did was censorship, and you know it. Just because Cary did not (yet) stop you from posting your material does not mean it is not censorship. What you did was go overboard and shut down a thread, just because you like to read your witticisms.

Look at it this way...the police can shut down a newspaper, or a gang can menace the publisher into giving up. Both are censorship...just because one is govt sanctioned and the other is not does not change things.

The RD thread has also brought tremendous publicity to the FFU, which begets more participation, which is the goal of the FFU.

On the FFU, some monikers are legends (at least in the eyes of some). But I cannot find a list of plankowners or dukes or whatever than set the cultural standards for the FFU. As for shutting down threads, some have tried with all of their might to shut down the RD thread and the "Dead Fred Thread" to no avail. The only thing that shuts down a thread on FFU is lack of interest.

Why would someone want to shut down the RD thread. What are the standards that are to be used to a) determine a thread is uncool, so should be attacked; or b) shut down a thread being used others. This is a serious question...pls try to address seriously.

It is not over till the lawsuit is settled. Hearing was on July 3, and the judge will issue his ruling on July 25.

And there are new RD plans being announced by the FCPS (Coppermine, Annandale). Some FFU folks want to share ideas and status on the pros and cons. Should there be a new RD thread for each RD, or do the people who care have permission to keep using the current RD thread?

And how do your (erroneous) impressions of the finality of the RD matter relate to your attack on a non-RD thread?

Okay, I want to personally thank "Tired of pimple faced nazis". That was a new poster to my thread, not me re-posting under a new name. At least this person understands how wrongly I was treated. This was my first posting on FFU and it was a terrible experience for me. I was attacked for no reason other then trying to find other FFX parents that had summer school bus issues. This is a great forum to discuss so many things happening in our county but it is becoming quite similar to Craigs List Rant and Raves, which is full of mean spirited people that seem to take pleasure in offending others.

The rude comments to me were totally uncalled for. I live in Fairfax County, I had an issue with the school system and I thought I had found a forum to find others that could either sympathize with me or offer suggestions. I was totally unprepared to be personally attacked by a stranger. Was it really necessary? Did it achieve anything? Will it keep me from posting future 'whining' comments? Fortunately, no, I am resilient and will continue to post any inane nonsense I want to. If you don't like my threads then just ignore them.

Can't we all just live in peace and let me do my thing and you do yours?!?!

BTW-The bus picked up my daughter this morning for school. The bus route was rerouted once I brought it to their attention that an area had been missed. It was a mistake and numerous children were not included when the bus routes were made...due to budget cuts and too few staff.

It's not a stupid question. It is bullshit.

Statistics show that on average those with degrees from prestigious private colleges don't earn any more over their lifetime than those who have graduated from less prestigious state colleges. I think this "competitive parenting" is an unfortunate trend in this country where the welfare of children is set aside so parents can point to the trophies their kids won or the certificates they received.

I didn't have AP or IB and I am doing quite well financially, thank you. Oh...and I don't see a therapist because of something my parents did to me while I was young. I imagine many of these kids in AP and IB who are being pushed relentlessly by their parents are going to end up being married multiple times and binging on cocaine or booze when they are older.

This argument is totally irrelevant. The question wasn't about the merits, or lack thereof, of either AP or IB. He asked "Who cares?" Stupid question. Whether valid, sensible or otherwise, lots of parents have an opinion on the issue, and that should by now be obvious.

I actually agree with most of what you say. What college you go to does not guarantee success or failure in your career. However, one of the main points of interest for some parents, me included, regarding AP or IB is if my kids will be able to get a few college credits for courses taken in HS. It probably won't make a difference in the final tuition bills, or how long it takes them to get their degree, but it can give them a little scheduling flexibility to take other courses of interest. I don't think either of my kids are good candidates for the IB diploma, but both are capable of advanced work in specific areas. That is why I prefer AP over IB.

Don't be so ignorant as to think that a parent's interest in AP (or IB) automatically means they are trying to shove it down their kids' throats. Oh, and congratulations on your financial success.

Fairfax County has always provided transportation to summer school via pick-up locations at elementary schools. The regular bus stops are only during the regular school year. If you child is in Special Education they may be able to provide a handicap bus.
