Yes, those brings back fond memories. You remember that one Christmas when we all wondered if our tongues would stick to a frozen flagpole? I remember that one guy was triple dog dared and he got his tongue stuck. They had to call the fire department! ha!

Then there was that other kid who wanted a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas, all the teachers were like "you'll shoot your eye out!"

Thanks for the memories.

Yes.
Mrs. Godfrey, Wyett, and Eason were my teachers. (Can you say "Mrs." Today)?
I have some historical documentation and "Kodachromes" of the May Day events.
Pretty strict, traditional education. Inez Fletcher was no-nonsense.
Attended Fall 1959 ~ Spring 1962 (Kintergarden ~ 2nd Grade)

I went to Pal-Nez in '62 or '63...kindergarten. I remember two things: a maypole, which I somehow found a little intimidating, and a girl named Alexis, whom I was convinced I would marry some day. I think I remember crying a lot, too. Oh, and this: I was picked up each morning by an African-American woman driving a van. I learned my first Motown hits in that van!

I went to PALNEZ School for 1st and 2nd grades, in 1965 and 1966. I played the auto harp. We performed the May Pole Dance and had a wonderful spring festival every year. Such great memories. After that, Fairfax County public schools, in the new town of Reston, seemed sterile and mean.

If anyone is interested, the former Palnez school was on the site of today's Olive Garden on Leesburg Pike. Th owners and founders of the school were a married couple named Paul and Inez. They opened a school that provided kindergarten instruction in a time when Fairfax County operated only grades 1-6. I think the school was on their residential property.

Yes! Wonderful, caring environment. Remembering Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Wyatt, Maypole dances and bringing in peanut butter as emergency food and hiding under the table in kindergarten as part of a drill for what must have been the Cuban Missile Crisis. I too was picked up in a yellow van to be driven to school. Have often wondered whatever happened to former classmates and the school...

I don't see any structures on or near that parcel on
South Jefferson Street between 1960 and 1976, by which
time it was paved over and the current Olive Garden
building was present. This is directly across from the airport.

I therefore believe the school was somewhere else.

I stumbled on this thread because I went to Palnez and wondered what is there now (I no longer live in Virginia). I went to kindergarten-first grade in 1963-64 and remember the Maypole, and the song "Winchester Cathedral." I also remember construction starting on Tysons Corner with a big hole in the ground and lots of yellow construction equipment.

I don't remember my teachers, but my first-grade teacher was very mean. I was the slowest in my class, and she would make fun of me and a boy who was also slow. Luckily I ended up with a wonderfully nurturing teacher in second grade who encouraged me and helped me progress.

I've now been working at an Ivy League university for 25+ years, so maybe I owe my start to Palnez?

Yes, I went there from, I believe 1961-62, in first grade. My teacher was Mrs. Johnson she was horrible! She slapped me across my face because I was talking and threatened to demote me from the reading group I was in (I don't remember the name) to the Superman reading group (that one I remember!). I also remember being picked up in the morning by a micro bus and taken back home in the afternoon. I remember taking the train ride into DC and going to the zoo. I remember telling my mother that I did not want to go back to that school. At the graduation, old lady Johnson had poison ivy, so no one could shake her hand. Served her right! I then went to Lemon Road Elementary and rolled down the big hill in the back of the school on my way home.

I believe I was one of the first students at Palnez. We only had about 6 or 7 in our kindergarten class and it was held In the old Fletcher home before there modern brick rambler was build as well as their school building. The year I was there was 1946.

The Fletcher's daughter Margaret was sick with the measles during our school year and I remember her peeking out of her room at us but of course she was in quarantine.

In about 1964, my two daughters went to Palnez for several years and I became a bus driver who drove one of the little yellow buses which were Econolines. I subsequently became a teacher of 4-year olds and Margaret Fletcher was also a teacher.

Yes, I attended Nursery School(apparently in the Fletcher home?), kindergarten, 1st grade with Mrs. Clark, and 2nd grade with Mrs. Wyatt.
I remember our kindergarten class being asked to bring in food (think I brought peanut butter) for possible emergency use and learning to hide under the tables -part of drill practice during the Cuban Missile crisis? One of the twins in my class served as Maypole king year we were in 2nd grade. Oh yes - and of course the yellow van which picked me up and dropped me back at home...

I attended first grade in 1958. My birthday was a couple of weeks late to enroll in public school with my age group. I remember a lot about it. The "evening gown" for the Maypole dance and I still have the "majorette/ soldier" costume we wore for the tap dance routine. I learned some Spanish there, too. The first grade was in the owner's brick rambler home (lower level) and the kindergarten was in the bungalow type house next door. I don't know if any photos exist, but I will look.

I went to Palnez 66-67 kindergarten with Miss Norwood, 67-68 first grade with Mrs. Clark. I remember the granddaughter of Inez was in my class, Debbie Fletcher, if I remember correctly. I was the prince of the Maypole dance in spring 68, but I was so sad that I had to wear white, I wanted to wear the nifty red white and blue uncle sam costumes the class wore, and dance to the broadway song "step to the rear" from that year's broadway hit. I remember from the playground watching Tyson's be built, and Inez telling my mom how sad she was to be soon selling the school, I think she retired to Florida.

Hello! I went to Palnez in 1960-61. I remember the maypole dance and how they dressed us up like brides and grooms and we danced to Love and Marriage! My teacher I think was Mrs Clark and I’d hold her hand st lunch. We put our milk money in a globe money box and took the milk from a fridge. Lyn K was a student I remember, and my neighbour Deavah Knott. I remember a Spanish spelling bee-type competition with flashcards and how I bombed out by thinking it was “brother”, the word I didn’t know, and the winning boy got it with”papa”. I remember a rabbit lady coming one day who gave out all these rabbit things, lastly a real white rabbit! Thanks for the memories. Leslie Schindler
Oh! And teal silver dollar awards for reading books and attendance. A treasure beyond my wildest dreams!

I was at Palnez 1961-63 for 1st & 2nd grades; my late-in-year birthday meant I couldn't start 1st grade at public school until '62. I rather think that's why Palnez got started -- for students like me with late birthdays. My teachers were Mrs. Lang (1st grade) & Mrs. Wyatt (2nd grade). One of my teachers (won't say which), kept a yard-long paddle that was painted with scenes from "George Washington & the Cherry Tree" painted along its length in red & black. Did she use it? Oh, yes she did, sometimes with a preliminary drop-trou. Did she use it on me? Hell no! I remember the missile crisis drills. For that spring festival, whatever they called it, my 1st grade class danced to "A White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation" with the girls all wearing long pink dresses. Only the 2nd graders got to wind the maypole. We wore green & white dresses; I don't remember what the guys wore. After Palnez, which went only as far as 2nd grade, I was sent to Dunn Loring. The Palnez building's been gone for years now, with the site all covered over with Tyson's Corner Center.I wish I knew what happened to the little "roller coaster!"

Yes, I had one of those pink dresses in 1961 for the 1st grade dance. The song was Marty Robbins' "A White Sport Coat & a Pink Carnation."
