3:50PM EST December 6. 2012 - President Obama stressed the threat of higher taxes as part of his "fiscal cliff" campaign Thursday, illustrating his point with a visit to a middle-class family in Virginia.
Speaking at the Falls Church home of Tiffany and Richard Santana, a high school teacher and a Toyota dealer, Obama said their family faces the prospect of up to $4,000 in new taxes if Congress is unable to reach a debt reduction agreement.
"They're keeping it together, they're working hard, they're meeting their responsibilities," Obama said of the Santana family. "For them to be burdened unnecessarily because Democrats and Republicans aren't coming together to solve those problems gives you a sense of the costs on personal terms."
Obama and Congress are negotiating an agreement to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff, a series of tax hikes and budget cuts that kick in next year without a new budget agreement.
The cliff includes the elimination of the George W. Bush-era tax cuts, including those that benefited middle class families like the Santanas.
Both parties oppose middle-class tax hikes; the key to their standoff involves taxes on the wealthy.

I would have liked to bring my kids and ask him to explain why he continues to spend so recklessly, putting them in a debt they will never be able to get out of. They are all under 12 years old.

59K is all she makes?! How does someone survive living in this area making that little? A teacher should make more. ... Look at that Rate my teacher website. Pretty funny. I think the last thing anyone cares about is a teachers rating on a kid grading site. The worse the grade the better the teacher probably. Hahaha!

In MD & DC, they exist, but in VA, there are voluntary associations (FEA and FCFT) that lobby school boards on behalf of teachers, but there is no collective bargaining. You may wish to research the phrase "right to work". VA is a right to work state.
"A Right to Work law secures the right of employees to decide for themselves whether or not to join or financially support a union"
Also, see Va. Code Ann. ยงยง 40.1-58 through 40.1-69

Are you referring to retirement and medical benefits? If so, can you name anyone else who is taxed on such a plan? Not referring to stock portfolios, but specifically a group retirement plan and the medical benefits. Certainly these benefits make the job more valuable and help to retain employees, but it does nothing to help pay the bills monthly.

I had to laugh, teachers are the biggest obama supporters living in a fantasy world where only the federal government can make life fair. I guess they are waking up to the fact obama made lots of promises of free stuff that is just not going to happen.

Who gives a shit what she does on her days off, she's entitled to them just like you are. She can take the day off to smear dog shit on a wall if she wants. Just bc she teaches your pain in the ass kid doesn't mean she can't do what she wants in her free time. Get off her case and do something useful with your life.

59 k a year for babysitting 9 months a year, 7 am to 3 pm, 5 days a week sounds pretty fucking good if you ask me. Being a teacher has no skill except to have good memory skills which is a basic requirement of everyday life if you expect to make more than 40 k. Dont even get me started on history teachers. All they do is read the chapter the night before and recite.
