Anybody got the Final scores for games? Mostly interested in the Centreville/WestPo game and the shoot out that turned out to be Lee/Edison.

Nothing to worry about folks. Centreville turned this game into a joke early and often. 44-0 at half with Scott Walter hitting Charles Tutt for 2 long touchdown passes and AJ Turner for another. Chase Heiner ran for a TD along with Xavier Nickens-Yzer and a defensive fumble recovery and a safety equal the half time score and ball game. The defense held West Pot and Demornay to nothing until the 4th quarter in the last seconds and the starters laughing on the sidelines gave a long TD pass to make it 51-7. Total Beat down.

Whether they win a state title or not, it is clear Haddock is one of the best coaches in the region if not the best... He has turned around that program and has them as strong as ever with much better opponents than the Wildcats had back in the good old days before 2000.

I think Lee has a couple electric players on offense, but nothing too special. Their defense however is terrible.

Edison scored most of their points in the 2nd half and late in the game, against many of Lee's backups. So I think Edison still sucks.

Don't sleep on Westfied.

The D will be great, the RB's will be great and playmakers on the outside. They need to replace the production they got from QB last year, but if their QB can manage the game, they are not an easy out for anyone----including C'Ville.

TC Williams was crushing Oakton 30 something to 2 when I left in the 4th quarter. And the only reason Oakton scored a safety was because TC's QB inadvertently stepped out of the end zone.

Was at the Westfield Game. Was 7-7 at the half and a combination of a 70 yd TD run on the first play of the second half and a 99 yd TD run after a long Hayfield drive and score basically put the game away

Lot of mistakes and fumbles by both teams but it hurt Hayfield more. Hayfield who has a scholarship QB Essentially stopped throwing in the second half

Hayfield played tough - they should win at least 6 games this year. Westfield's offense looked pretty inexperienced.

Joe Wilson was hurt in the 2nd quarter and did not return. He is their whole team, and to be without him for any length of time is a huge blow for the Rams. I'm surprised Robinson even scored 14 points in the second half. Anyone know what he did?

Lake Braddock was about two touchdowns better than Robinson. I know they were up 30, but a couple horrendous calls and a crazy play where an interception was fumbled into the hands of a receiver for a touchdown put Robinson in that situation. Robinson got a couple meaningless touchdowns late in the fourth which made the score pretty accurate.

Alexander and Sica are by far the best wide receiver duo in the region. Everyone knew about Alexander, but Sica was huge. Lake Braddock was bigger across the board it seemed like. They are going to be an incredibly difficult offense to stop with 3 FBS caliber players.

Robinson is not going to be good this year. They don’t have much of a passing game and teams should continue to key on Wilson. Year 1 with Meier though is a rebuild. I feel pretty confident saying they will probably be 4th in the Concorde this year. Centreville, Westfield, Chantilly, Robinson, Oakton, Herndon in that order. I am shocked at how bad Oakton is right now, they got drubbed last night and in both of their scrimmages. Honestly maybe Herndon finishes above them, I’ve heard they’ve gotten better but have not seen them.

You are not understanding why he came back, when you make statements like "year one with Meier is a rebuild." First of all he is only back for one year. He will be taking an admin job somewhere after this year. Secondly and most important, he believes there is no need for a rebuild. That is why he did not give Taylor any additional time to get them back on track. He believes the talent at Robinson now, along with his brilliant offensive mind and head coaching, can return Robinson to the glory years this season. At least he believed that till last night. This is not the 1990's, the game has evolved and changed and he is lost. It is a joke that he fired the last coach, took the job himself and then put that product on the field last night.

South County could've won that game with 80 or 90 points if they didn't put in backups and the clock didn't get run down in the second half. It was 49-7 at halftime.

Symmes is a good QB. The 2011 team was dominant on D. This team looks good on both sides. 7.5 sacks in the first half alone.

Mt Vernon only scored because their drive was extended after a bunch of sideline penalties on the staff

That said, who knows how they'll do against better teams

Meier was actually running the offense really well and they looked good until Wilson got hurt, and if it wasn't for the two fumbles in the first half it would have been a very close game. Btw Henderson was very inconsistent for a four star prospect and got lucky on a few td's. lb has no class!!! After receiving a punt they kicked the ball back to Robinson in a manner of "we're the best, you are pathetic".

5A schools in Fairfax County are cooked! The final four in this year's 5A might all be Loudoun schools, unless they have to play each other before getting that far.

Briar Woods destroyed a decent Brooke Point program, and Broad Run drove 4 hours to lay the wood to a physically talented Booker T. Washington team from the 757.

Then Woodgrove rolls it up on Freedom in their first 5A game, and Tuscarora beats a solid Kettle Run team in their place.

Oh, and Stone Bridge didn't even play. The balance of power has shifted. Stone Bridge is going to beat Braddock AND Westfield before playing the Little Sisters of the Poor that is known as their conference.

Braddock simply outplayed Robinson tonight, I thought both teams played with class.

The punt you are referring too isnt used very much, but they were trying to score. Here is the rule:

Braddock tried a free kick/fair catch kick that allows a team that has just made a fair catch to attempt a free kick from the spot of the catch. The kick must be either a place kick or a drop kick, and if it passes over the uprights and of the defensive team's goal, three points is scored to the offensive team.

I completely agree with you except that I don't think Stone Bridge will beat both Westfield and Braddock. I think Braddock will win by 7 or 10 and Westfield will lose by about that margin. Both of those games could easily go the other way, but I think they win one and lose one. I really agree that the 5A powers are in Loudoun but I think the 6A schools collectively are a little bit better.

Oakton beat those Bulldogs you were hyping in the Regional Final last year. Westfield always a bridesmaid never a bride. You can win all the regular season games you like but if you can't win the big one then people will hate.

Oakton is not as good this season I agree. They will win games and they will make the playoffs. Look for them to right the ship this week at Madison. They will finish 6-4 5-5 which around here may be good enough to squeak in with quality power points.

Oakton does have a real easy out of conference schedule. They get to play Woodson and West Springfield, I do not think they beat Madison though. Madison will finally get a win this year against Oakton calling it now. I say they win 4 games and miss the playoffs.

Westfield beats South Lakes by 49 or more....

And I find it hard to beleive that a horrid Herndon team can be favored by 17 over any team, but they just might do it against woeful Mt. Vernon.

Over/under for Stone Bridge/Braddock is 72!

No way Langley beats Yorktown... I know nothing about TJ and Stuart but TJ did beat them 42-0 last year, that alone leads me to believe TJ is probably a little better.

How about Marshall vs. Wakefield? Battle of 0-10 teams from last year. One team is walking away very happy...

No way that SL will beat Westfield, Annandale will not beat Falls Church, Mclean will not beat W&L, and West Springfield will not beat Edison.

I understand Madison lost a lot but I think Oakton lost more. Would not surprise me to see Oakton lose. The West Potomac Game will be interesting to see if they can bounce back from the Centreville beating.

The LB/SB game is the game to watch. I am going to try to pick it up on my PC via Game Day while attending another game Friday.

Lee isn't part of the Patriot District anymore but if I were I would rank them right above Annandale. Nothing Higher.

Langley's shot at beating Yorktown all hinge on whether they can stop MJ Stewart which they were unable to do last year when they actually had some talented players. But they lost pretty much all of them, especially on defense, so I doubt they have any chance whatsoever. I'm guessing it will be 35-7 Yorktown, and that's being generous. Maybe that meathead Howerton should focus on developing his crap skill players instead of his perennially fat, lethargic line that can only run block.

The new classification system did NOTHING to the districts - all districts in our area are UNCHANGED and Lee is still in the PATRIOT district. There are still all-district teams and district champs (based on district record alone in football). In all sports (I think) but football there are also conference champs. Football just uses power points to determine the 16 playoff teams.

Hate to break it to you, but football is not part of the SOL, so when there are major budget revisions thanks to the "Great Turf Fraud of 2013" do not be surprised if football gets cut WAY back-to the point where it costs in excess of $250 to play.

Can someone better explain the power points this year? For 6a, is a win vs another opponent worth 26 points and a loss, 15 points? Here is something from Virginiapreps and one 6A South team has 27 points. It seems 5A get 24points for a win against another 5A team and 26 points for a win against a 6A team.

The county (i.e. the taxpayer) only pays for the 3 travel busses, the Refs and the field maintenance/lights.

Everything else is paid for by fund raising/parents. In fact football doesn't even get their own gate, that is kept by the DSA for the overall sports program going mostly to the money losing sorts like girl's soccer, softball and field hockey.

The fact that it costs anything is the problem.

I think it is all a waste of money, and not really a school function-schools already have PE.

Sports cost more than all of the other activities put together. If you add marching band and cheerleading, it is way over the top.

If the parents want it, they can pay for ALL of it, and tack on 5-10% to the schools for administering the helicopter playground.

At least you admit some sports lose money-why do we even have them?

Strauss, Kaufax, McElveen, and Velkoff should be tossed out of office over this.

The County Board will have a riot on its hands if this kind of waste keeps up.

Someone said:

"I would rather die speaking my mind than live fearing to speak"

That's my motto.

I think high school sports are a waste of time and money. If certain parents and others think this is so important, let them pay for it. I can just imagine the laughter if a parent approached the school and said their kid wanted to learn to read Sanskrit or play the harp. They'd be told to do it on their own.

But…football, marching band, cheerleading, that's somehow OK. I still wonder why these things are not in the SOL?

Even if a kid gets a sports scholarship, that's a kind of doom as well. Very few get pro contracts, and very few graduate. So now you have someone who is 22 years old, poor academic skills and no prospects. So much for the "look at all of the scholarships we'll get" argument.

Likewise, the arguments about school spirit, teamwork, lessons learned on the gridiron, those are all rubbish as well.

There's also a dark side involving bullying, rape, and all kinds of politics with parents, coaches, boosters and of course the school board.

People may say "well, football has always been here" and I would say "well, they used to think the earth was flat" and wait for a response.

It's truly sad when one or a few people have to take a discussion about something fun and exciting for others and decide to post things to try to bring everyone down to their low level life. It goes to show the type of people they are, rarely invited out and have a miserable life/job/family. I guess if they are miserable, everyone should be miserable. What's worse, is they think by whining and complaining on a forum like this will change things. If you have an opinion or don't like something, get off your ass and run for office, petition local people, do something but stop trying to suck the life out of other people's enjoyment.

Now lets talk some high school football. I am a big fan of gamedaymagazine.com (no affiliation) and they put out some nice analysis about the upcoming games.

It is different then how it has been in the past. My understanding though...

If you win against a 6A school you get 26 points, a 5A school 24 points.

If you lose against a 6A school you get 14 points for just playing, and likewise a 5A school you get 12 points.

Now this is where you get rewarded for playing a good team, and why 6A schools have no problem playing Stone Bridge...

For teams you beat, you get 2 additional points per each win they have. Lets say a school has 5 wins against all 5-5 teams to keep it simple. That would be an additional 10 points for each win for a total of 50 points. If a 6A school like Braddock beats Stone Bridge and SB finishes 9-1, that would be an additional 18 points for Braddock on top of the 25* they got for the win.

For all the teams you lose to, you get a point for each win they have. If you lose to a 10-0 team that will be 10 additional points, if you lose to a 2-8 team that will be 2 points, another incentive to play tough competition.

*If you are a higher team playing down you automatically get 1 additional point, and if you are a higher team playing down in a district game you get 2 additional points. This is in place as 6A teams are mixed with 5A teams.

1) Yes, I like soccer, but don't think we need to waste money on it in high school.

2) Sorry, don't eat tofu.

3) Sorry, not a band parent. Band goes with football, you know.

4) Sorry, I could care less about TJ.

5) Sorry, I don't "hover" over SOLs, I take steps to make sure my kids pass.

6) Never got my ass kicked by an athlete. Do you think athletes should be violent and predatory?

7) You think football is more important than family? If you do, I feel sorry for you.

7) Football, sports and clubs within high school are a family. These help teach kids social skills, leadership, respect, work ethic and camaraderie. Also how to deal with fear, multi-tasking and disappointment without resorting to guns, violence and faithless religion (whole different subject I know).

Read this:

http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=20021020&slug=mytake20

If you don’t here is an excerpt:

"Interscholastic programs enhance the overall educational experience and build well-rounded students and leaders. Need proof? A comprehensive, statewide study of high-school student-athletes in North Carolina over a three-year period found a significant difference in grade-point average, attendance rates, discipline referrals, dropout rates and graduation rates between students who participated in athletics or other activities and those who didn't.

In fact, student-athletes in the study had a 5 percent higher graduation rate, an 8 percent lower dropout rate, 10 percent fewer discipline referrals and missed six fewer days of school. Athletes' grade-point average was 2.86 vs. 1.96 for nonathletes."

Now Shut Up and stop trolling! Don't go away mad, just go away.

Can we get on to FOOTBALL!!!

I didn't want to get into the debate on this thread either but the more involved kids are in school activities (including sports) the more likely they are to graduate high school.

Goes for band as well:

Fortunately, most people are not basement dwelling hermits.

If you think the taxpayer is subsidizing these programs - try putting your kid through 4 years of any of the above and see how free it is. The booster organizations (read: private money) pay for a large percentage of the funds required. Why do you think they are always fundraising? (which also upsets people).

Let the boosters pay for all of it. Crooked fundraising upsets me (as in where a fundraising company gets a cut greater than 10%). If there is fundraising money left to spare, channel some of it back to the schools.

I would not let my kids waste time with football, band, or cheerleading. They get private music and art lessons (which I pay for, no fundraising), ballet (which I pay for, no fundraising) and martial arts (which I pay for, no fundraising) as well as occasional private tutoring.

No this is not a wealthy family but we forego things like tv and Miley Cyrus in favor of proper educations. It is how my father raised me (a real gift, the value goes up every year) and it is part of my homage to him to pass it along.

Inquisitive One - while you always have to worry about most teams, I saw a replay of the TC - Oakton game. TC scored on a number of big plays that I would be surprised if CVille would give. I did not see them drive down the field and score at all (although I might have missed one)

Oakton drove down the field a few times with limited offensive weapons but tc stopped them. CVille weapons are stronger

Still- always need to worry

Oh boy, we got a major upset fellas. Langley beat Yorktown 35-28, on no fault of MJ Stewart though. He scored all 4 of Yorktowns TDs. The Saxons O line and running back absolutely man-handled Yorktown's D and the game was nowhere as close as the score indicates. Stone bridge is going to have their work cut out for them next week.
