Bar J's chili restaurant
Posted by: Oldie but goodie ()

Does anyone remember the old Bar J's chili Parlor restaurant that started out next to booth feeds on route one? They went on to move that restaurant to a new location on route one and also had a sister retaurant in Woodbridge on Gordon Blvd. Loved that chili Mac and mexican pizza. Anyone know the award winning recipe or how to get a hold of the owner to see if she would give it out? I believe her name was Mary Anderson.

I think it is very similar to this:

1 pound ground beef
1 small cut onion
1 package of spaghetti noodles
1 package of taco seasoning
Shredded cheese and whatever kind of beans you want to add.

Cook ground beef, drain add taco seasoning and onion. Cook noodles seperately then add chili over noodles on plate or bowl. This is my receipe that I came up with and I thinks its pretty close. You will just have to play around with it and figure out what works best for your taste.

Hello. The owner was John Anderson and he is my uncle. Not sure who this Mary Anderson is that you are referring to. He has a daughter named Kathy but she was NOT the owner. Anyway, he decided to retire from the restaurant business. Unfortunately I don't know the recipe. Sorry...

Had a friend who worked there the secret to all thier food was the rat meat they used. The Booth Feed store had tons of rats and they would trap them and grind them into ground meat.

I still dream of barj burritos. Mexican hot and the wet burritos were my favorite. The route 1 location got a different chef, went to microwaves, and 1 in 4 burritos were cold in the middle. I still ate there until they finally closed the last one in Woodbridge. Wish I had the meat recipe.

I was disappointed to see Bar J's in Woodbridge had closed. I was stationed overseas for quite a while, and was looking forward to spending several evenings working my way through the menu when I returned. My favorites were the wet Texas chili (no beans), Polo Loco, chicken fajitas, and the guacamole dip. I've been to several similar restaurants since then, but Bar J's was, and will likely always be, the platinum standard for consistently delicious food.

I'm back overseas again, but would dearly love to have the recipe for the chili and Polo Loco.

Can't speak to the other items, but I believe the recipe for their Mexican Pizza was...

2 cups shredded cheddar
1 12" diameter Flour Tortilla
1tb Sour Cream
1 Full Colon
1/2 tomato

Smooth the Tortilla over round pan
Squat over pan and empty colon in circular manner
Spread colon contents evenly to edges of tortilla
Sprinkle 2 cups shredded cheese evenly over doo-doo
Add 1/2 of tomato (diced)
Cook in oven at 375 for 20min or until entire house smells like shit
Add sour cream as desired and serve

Bar-J, the original, next to Booth Feed, was one of my favorite little joints. Their chili-mac was the best and their salsa and chips were great. I actually catered my best friend's party from them and they gave a great price. I sure miss that place and tip my hat every time I drive by the old location to this day. The one up near Woodlawn was great too and we even made the trek to Woodbridge. My wife bought me a little painting of the original restaurant she discovered somewhere. Happy memories of good food, beer and friendships. (And, yeah I'd love the chili-mac recipe too, which is how I stumbled on this board.)

Garlic powder

heat butter add powdered garlic and red pepper flakes
Add meat and quick fry
Serve from pan

I, too, loved the Bar J's Chili parlors, and I recently heard a rumor that Kathy Anderson was in the process of opening a new one somewhere in the area.

I was involved in the opening of the Bar J's Steakhouse in Woodbridge with John and Kathy Anderson, which was the beginning of the end for the chili parlors because of all the capitol that was lost. Myself and the rest of the management team were woefully unprepared for the jump from chili parlor to Outback-style steakhouse, and I have regretted my part in its' failure for 20 years. The Andersons were good people that deserved better.

Regardless, it was good food and fun times, and I hope Kathy can get it restarted.

The Barj is in a beautiful location in Occoquan. Unfortunately, The food is not that great and Beer on tap tastes bitter...However on Friday's they have great live music on the patio. So we eat at a good restaurant, then go to Bar J and drink Bottled beer.

We would eat there if the food wasn't so awful.

I hope the owner reads this and makes some changes. It really could be a great place to dine AND enjoy live entertainment.

Burritos are larger, and are served on a plate vs what that thing is.

Enchiladas are smaller and served in groups.

The offering that is in the picture has been smothered in melted Velveeta cheese product, and it is impossible to ID the exact nature of what it might be.

Actually you are both right and wrong. Bar J's started as one of those roadside BBQ Smoker set ups that sold BBQ ribs and chicken. As a side offering to the BBQ, chili was made and sold - All starting in the mid 1970's.

Chili was wildly popular, and that's what sparked the idea of an actual restaurant - Simple as it was it was a success.

The Lorton location WAS there in the Seventies, because we started eating there before my dad got posted abroad (we left D.C. area in '79).

How much can you know about it when you call it "Bar J's"? The name is Bar J.

The Chinese restaurant in Burke next to Shoppers food warehouse(tau tau) had pics of that whole area along Route 1. Dan Akroyd was somehow involved with hillbillies heaven nearby.

I remember being stationed at Ft belvoir 1970-1973, and there was a corner mart at pohick and Route 1 on that dangerous corner!!

Bozelli was on the same side going towards telegraph.

Geeeez!

That lunch line at bozellis went out the door!

He was probably already involved with his future wife, Donna Dixon at that point so had ties to the area. Her dad owned Hillbilly Heavan.
