Population of Texas, approx 24 million.

Number of signatures on petition, approx 94,000. And this is the most signatures from any state.

Sounds like sour grapes, not secession.

When Republicans learn to stop saying stupid ass things in public and stop hating on their constituents, maybe they will win some votes.

I'm pretty sure secession is illegal under the Constitution. Though not explicitly state...I do believe the argument that once you rejoined the Union (USA), you could NOT for any reason actually leave the Union.

Of course Wikipedia has a whole section on it secession v. natural right of revolution.

Locke's philosophy corresponds to violations of natural rights and I fail to see where the Obama administration has failed to protect people's natural rights of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.

I'm not happy with his policies or his actions but nothing he has done has violated my natural rights; therefore, I personally have no right to argue for a revolution against the current administration as they continue to work in best practice via the social contract that both, they and I adhere to with one another.

That's just my two cents though.

I hear this crap after every election. So and so is going to take our guns! Ammo becomes expensive, certain calibers sell out and related prices go up. A few months later, people realize that no one is going door to door collecting up guns and ammo and prices return to normal.

Heard all of that crap in 2k9. Still have my guns and ammo. Can't believe idiots are starting this up again. The only ones getting robbed are the consumers that have to pay the BS price increase that paranoid people get started.

I guess there is a reason that Northern Va (mostly fairfax county) practically carried the entire state. It's hard to think when you live in the boonies stuffing pork rinds and drinking beer all day!

I personally got a good laugh watching Va stay red all night over the entire state until NoVa got their votes counted and turned Va blue.

If Virginia was to secede this state would be nothing but a bunch of moonshine drinking rednecks living in log shacks.

We need feredal highway funds and federal dollars to keep the economy of Virginia going. Norfolk is almost entirely dependant upon military and naval bases. Quantico marine base is another good reason to NOT secede.

Secession is illegal, with the exception of Texas; Texas was an independent country from 1836 until 1845, when it was annexed by the US, due to the fear of Texas signing treaties with Great Britain or France.

We fought the Civil War to determine it's illegal. The Declaration of Independence states that overthrow of a government is only acceptable when that government has violated "natural rights". However, Obama (as much as I think he's an empty suit... and I'm a Democrat) hasn't infringed on anybody's natural rights. Being "forced" to buy healthcare really isn't infringing on the Constitution or anything else. It's more of a consumer protection thing than anything else.

It's a consumer protection thing for one very simple reason: if you're an idiot, and decide to drive your car at 95 MPH down Fairfax County Parkway, hit a utility pole and have to be taken to Inova Fairfax... and you don't have health insurance, the taxpayer foots the bill. Period.

No, not in the least. There's something called the commerce clause that states "Congress has the power to regulate interstate commerce", and something known as the "elastic" or "necessary and proper clause". This states "Congress has the power to make any law necessary and proper for the running of the nation".

Healthcare is interstate commerce; it's not a violation of the Constitution.

I oppose gay marriage (terminology), think that the immigration process should be reformed, believe that affirmative action should end, and believe that the "War on Women" is nonsense. I also think the argument about pay equality is nonsense, because men tend to be better qualified and work longer hours.

Oh, and I'm a Democrat. The Republican Party has valid viewpoints on many social issues. I consider some of them correct, and I disagree with others.

Evolution should be taught in schools. I'm religious and believe we have to have a separation of science and religion. The two are mutually exclusive... though it is possible to support the existence of God through science.

Let's try working on your basic English skills. Again, what has Pres Obama DONE to threaten the 2nd amendment?

1. Your example, has NOTHING to do with the 2nd amendment. That covers PROPOSED (as in, write this down, NOT PASSED legislation) international law.
2. How is this Legislation that Obama was responsible for?
3. Even if it did pass, it still has nothing to do with the 2nd. It covers INTERNATIONAL Arms TRADE.
4. Even the UN didn't pass it.

I no longer have a desire to reach reconciliation with people that would sign such petitions, especially given that they reside in states that receive far more back from the federal government than they pay in federal taxes.

These states are the biggest beneficiaries of the very government largesse that they profess to loathe so much. It would be funny if it weren’t so ridiculous and embarrassing for the nation. By all means, Mississippi, secede and learn to survive without the benefit of liberal states providing subsidies to you every year.

Hey, you know, that's a good point. I have never thought about the states in the same way as members of the EU. Larger members of the EU subsidizing the less affluent members (Greece). Never looked at the states, like that before. You are right!

The electoral map did kinda look like those that were providing the support and those taking the support, in some way.

Obviously, nobody's going to secede...yet. The mainstream will have a good laugh at "those secessionist crazies" and that talk will die out for awhile, as it always does. However, the US seems to become not only more polarized but actively circus-like as the technology of mass communication throws a monkey-wrench into old ideas of what "normal" is and life becomes more complex, and I'm not so sure the US in its current form will persist forever. Our older institutions are simply not equipped.

I'd have a lot more sympathy for the wave of secessionist petitions if I really thought what was behind them was a desire for freedom. Unfortunately I think a lot of them are motivated by paranoia over "Obummer the Un-American Socialist Hippie Fascist Anarchist Nazi Muslim Atheist Reptoid Gay Jew Witch-Doctor Monkey" who wants to take your guns and make your daughters have sex and get abortions while smoking marijuana in sex-ed class and praying to Allah to bring Sharia Law and million-dollar welfare checks to the US. It's like they're basically saying "Eeeew, Obama's got cooties! Let's get out of here!" I also am willing to bet that many of the people who signed those petitions will, come Thanksgiving, pay lip service to being "thankful" for the nation from which they just tried to secede. I bet a few of them even have children who are in military service to that very same nation, and are quite proud of that fact.

Any real secessionist movements out there wouldn't be signing petitions. They'd be too busy with the work it would actually take to secede.

Oh and about Texas defending the border, after the Korean war our contruction industry was booming and immigration went crazy just as today. Back then they put National Guard units on the border with live rounds and it was quickly stopped. Very simple. Nova and other urban centers have more welfare recepients then any other part of the state. Not surprisingly they also harbor the most gang-banger punk wanna-bes. Actually Richmond is the murder capital of VA and has the biggest gang population. Richmond is a major hub for drugs coming up the East Coast from FL. It's the drug distribution center for Norfolk and Western Va.

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)–An onslaught of petitions filed on the U.S. White House official website could be an indication that tens of thousands of people aren’t happy with the results of this year’s presidential election.
It’s a movement by the residents of at least 37 states, now including Virginia, where people have petitioned the government to secede from the United States of America.

More states keep adding petitions to the website as momentum gathers and there are duplicate state entries. Texas has the most votes so far, with almost 90,000 late Tuesday night.

When a petition reaches 25,000 the White House addresses the petition. A scenario in which the president signs off on allowing states to secede from the Union seems highly unlikely.
But, thousands of people have signed the online petitions on White House website. You can see it for yourself by clicking here.
The petitioners cite the Declaration of Independence, writing in part, “…it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with one another.”
Going on to say, “…a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.”
And concluding, “whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and institute new Government…”
Residents of Virginia created and signed the petition on November 11, 2012. No official leaders have signed off on it, and all of the online petitions are open for out-of-state residents to vote in favor of the initiative.
The petition itself. has until Dec. 11 to collect 25,000 signatures for it to get the attention and action of the president.
As of Tuesday night, over 4,000 people had signed the petition for Virginia to secede.

Other states where residents are asking to be allowed to secede include Alabama, Mississippi, California, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky, North Carolina, Illinois, Arizona, Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, North Dakota, Indiana, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Minnesota, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Colorado,Kansas, Illinois, Colorado, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Wyoming, Montana, and Oregon.

"War of Northern Aggression"? Hardly, the CSA seceded from the US, and fired on Fort Sumter.

States cannot secede from the Union, with the exception of Texas. And Texas only can because it was annexed in 1845 from the Republic of Texas.

This petition is as much of a joke as any online petition.

They could get every citizen of Texas to sign that petition and it still wouldn't matter. Texas cannot legally secede. They can choose to illegally secede, but that would result in the United States military being sent in to, ahem, reclaim the territory.

Put another way, we'd be a nuclear power in the midst of a civil war. Not that we'd nuke our own people, but we would suddenly find ourselves with foreign troops on our soil. After all, they can't allow a nuclear power to remain in civil war, especially when there are ICBMs located in the very state that caused the entire mess.

When it was all said and done, and Texas was crushed into oblivion, the one other almost entirely guaranteed change would be the loss of the 2nd amendment. It would almost likely be the result of UN sanctions (remember the whole nuclear weapons, civil war part?) and backlash from the population at American citizens firing on our own military.

Let's find a compromise.

Everyone who signs one of those petitions is now released from all federal tax obligations.

In return for this freedom, they release all claims on Social Security, Medicare, use of any facility, infrastructure or service which uses more than 50% federal funding, and must not travel outside of the state where they currently reside. They also relinquish any legal rights that the United States constitution provides.

This can extend to the CEOs who complain about Obama, taxes, regulations and the AHA. They can throw off the chains of government regulation, as well as access to our currency, our markets, and protections. They can relinquish all of their trademarks, copyrights and patents, in exchange for their freedom.

The question of leaving the Union is not addressed by the Constitution. In Texas v. White, 74 U.S. 700 (1869), the Supreme Court suggested that the Constitution ordained the "perpetuity and indissolubility of the Union". The court did allow some possibility of the divisibility "through revolution, or through consent of the States."[6][7]

Texas should be able to legally secede, provided it surrenders/accepts:

1. All ICBMs and military hardware currently under the control of the U.S. Military
2. All protections that come as part of being the United States.
3. All ability to form treaties with the United States
4. Complete and utter liability for any and all weather events that occur in the state.

Getting rid of people who think the US Government is out to get them is a good idea.

I must have been asleep when Louisiana lost all their oil, natural gas, and access to the Mississippi. Did they give it to Mexico or something? Guess Florida stopped growing produce too. I'll start buying my oranges from Alaska.

That means 25000. For a state of 25million thats not a big deal. For instance there are over 2 million incarcerated citizens in Texas. There are also over 1 million mentally unstable and medicated residents in Texas (4% of population). The fact that .1% of the population go together to sign something means nothing. The Green Party received .1% of the vote in Texas, thats about how legitimate this whole thing is. Talk to me when its a majority of the people in that state loser, otherwise you aint seceding no where even if the president says ok.

The signatures mean that the White House under it's policy must now respond. This will get press coverage and publicity. Then others will find out about the secessionist movements. That's the objective.

The NRA has 4.5 million members and growing. The most powerful lobby on the Hill
is the AARP. The NRA is the 2nd most powerful. Ask Harry Reid about his A rating
from the NRA. Too bad you have to resort of vile name calling but seeing as how
you must be one of Dr. Cecil Jacobsens kids I understand.

That's interesting. So you are saying the NRA is a pretty powerful group here in America, eh? Kinda like how powerful Hamas is in Palestine, right? Or maybe you are saying they are more like the USA version of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood? Just interesting comparison you make, is all....... Didnt the IRA give "A ratings" to politicos as well?

No, I'm talking about lobbying and legal power.

pro gun democrats

Here'a little tidbit for you. Comparing the NRA's power to Hamas
and the Muslim Brotherhood is rather childish don't you think?

Sorry gordon but their viewpoint is to interpret the 2nd Amendment
literally, the same way as the SCOTUS rulings in Heller and McDonald.

rights aren't absolute, TGR. right to free speech? court has held you can't yell "fire" in a crowded theater, for example.

courts have also held that you can't own certain types of guns.

Specific about what? Shall I start quoting the Federalist Papers
and how the 2nd Amendment came to be or post the SCOTUS rulings
in Heller and McDonald? National Firearms Act maybe?
