What do you set your thermostat to this time of year? (In Fairfax)

What do you set your thermostat too this time of year?

I live alone, in a 1200sq ft home and I have a natural gas powered heating system for the home.

I would be cool with just carrying around the portable electric heater from room to room and wearing some warm clothes.

Are there any bad parts to this idea?

63* while sleeping. Bills are not that bad (50 y.o. brick n block single family home). If its over 70* at night..I cannot sleep well. Weekends daytime= 69*-71*. But that's just "us" and the way we like it...cool! Central Fairfax.

Set the thermostat where you can be comfortable; warm clothes are fine, but the space heater costs more for the same heat and is more likely to been you're house down.

If you're looking to save money, check your house for drafts.

The standard advice has always been 68 degrees in the winter. Get a set back thermostat and let the house cool off at night.

Buy a quality programmable thermostat, it will pay for itself in a few months.

In the winter, I keep mine at 60 during the day when we aren't home, 67 at night, and 69-70 when we are awake at home.

In the summer, I keep it at 78-79 during the day when we aren't home, and 71 when we are home and same temp when we sleep.

When space is occupied, federal regulations after extensive think tank studies made at the taxpayers expense is:68 degrees set in the cold months, 72 in the warm months for optimum energy conservation via comfort level.common sense tells us dressing for the weather is healthier than insisting on fabricated weather conditions, so being tempted to 'kill two birds with one stone', well, save the $energy$, dress cooler or warmer and set the thermostat at a lower setting in the winter and higher in the summer. 66/74, 64/76, and so on. The fake atmosphere causes more harm than good, study has shown. Again, at the extensive exuberant expense of the taxpayers. Ask Bill bye the science guy, he knows better!

In the sec 8 houses the county puts up thermostats that wont go above 68 for heat and wont go below 75 for cooling.
We have to tape lunchbox freeze packs to the thermostat this time of year and the heat runs like crazy. If we get too hot we can always open the windows. Bad thing is you got to put a freshly frozen freeze pack on it every 6 hours or so. In the summer we shine a reading lamp on the thermostat to fool it and the house gets ice cold.

Dual zone -

Winter - downstairs 60 at night, 62 when at work, 70 when at home
Winter - upstairs 62 during the day, 68 when sleeping

Summer - downstairs 78 at night, 78 when at work, 72 when at home
Summer - upstairs 78 during the day, 72 when sleeping.

All electric, 4500 sq foot home. I'm on the budget plan with VA power, bill used to run $360 monthly, with the programmable thermostats cut almost $100 dollars a month off the bill.

Well, OP...that depends. I mean afterall...

WHAT FUCKING TEMPERATURE IS IT OUT-THE-FUCKING-SIDE, MOTHERFUCKER?!?!?!

I don't know anyone who sets their thermostat according to the calendar! What the fuck kind of question is that?!?!?

Life at the OP's house...

OP: Well honey...it's November. It's time to start setting the thermostat at 66 degrees because we want to save money on our heating bill.

Mrs. OP: But, dear...it's 75 degrees outside today. Do we have to run the A/C?

OP: It's November and that means we set the thermostat at 66 no matter what...

Mrs. OP: :/

The wife likes wearing booty shorts around the house so I installed a wood stove and set the furnace to 66. In the living room, w/ the stove going, the temps are around 78. 70-72 in the other rooms this morning @ 32 outside.

After Sandy there's been lots of fire wood available.

W/o the stove, we keep the thermostat at 72.

I have a space heater for my bedroom, set to 80 (I like it hot!)

Rest of the house is @ 68. No one else complains.

If you were truly a pedant, you would know that the answer to the question is "on."

The question should be "To what temperature..."

I keep my winter temp at 62, summer at 77. I don't change it during the day, night, when I'm home vs. when I'm not at home because it's a waste of energy to try to change the temperature in your house for a few short hours.

I keep it on 68 in the summer, AKA the "Obama/EPA" setting.
then in the summer i usually have it at 68 at night, and off in the day time if its sunny, 72 if its cloudy. (lots of south facing windows)

I work out of the home office. We have ours set to 65 during the day and 58 at night. When I worked downtown it was at 60 during the day (it went back up to 65 around 5 PM so it was warm when I got home).

During the summer it's at 76 during the day and 73 at night. When I worked downtown it was at 78 during the day, but now that's too warm because the home office is on the warmer side of the house and the computer equipment throws off enough heat that it's just too hot at 78.

At all times of year if the weather outside is such that the heat or AC is not needed I just switch the thermostat to "manual" and then set the temperature to a level where the system won't need to run. Most of October this year was like that.
