Why so many taxi's in Fairfax County
Posted by: Alex Rieger ()

Only been in a cab once in my life as a child in another place. Was going to try a new auto repair joint out in Chantilly. Figured I'd explore the idea of taking a cab home versus the rental car. Shit a cab ride is about $5.50 a mile? Hell I can rent a shit car for a lot cheaper. So why so many cabs in the county these days and why do they seem to carry folks who don't seem to be of means?

I forgot to add. Are we taxpayers subsidizing these folks of limited means with cheap taxi rides. Hell seems like it would be cheaper to get some shit cars and do the car pool thing

A couple of reasons.

1) Business people going to and from the airport or the hotel to a business.
2) Responsible drinkers going out for evening of fun and partying.
3) Car repairs.
4) Elderly that can't drive themselves.
5) DUI convictions with their licenses taken away. I know one guy who racked up over $10,000 in cabs after having his license taken away for a year.

I take a cab to and from the bars. My total cab is $20 and I don't have to worry about getting a DUI because I had an extra drink. I just figure the cab as part of my tab for the evening. My bar tab is $25 and my cab is $20. $45 bucks for a night out and a driver for evening isn't bad to me.

It's called a free-market. Cabs provide a service in exchange for money.

Because you can get a Drunk In Public for that. Who wants to spend the rest of the night in the drunk tank?

$5.50? Not sure how you get that

Redtop (rarely late, always clean, good drivers)

$3.25 base fee (which is pretty good since the driver's probably spent 20 mins getting to your house)

$0.40 per 1/5th mile = $2/mile

5 mile journey = $13.25 = $2.65 a mile

its a deal

The one's I feel sorry for are the Dulles airport drivers - I've spoken to many over the last few months who've barely covered their costs after a full day

Just ask the school board how many taxis are used to transport students to schools at taxpayer expense for one reason or another and you might find an answer to your question

No. Barely covering their costs has to do with the effective monopoly they have to lease their cabs from.

Last time I asked, which was many years ago, the drivers paid about $100 a day for the cab, and obviously have to fill the tank out of their own pockets.

and I hate all the sand whenever I go to the beach. Fucking sucks. I wish they'd do something about that.

@ alex, you only get arrested for dip if your acting like a douche bag. the cops wont mess with you if your drunk and using a cab, unless your causing a problem. stop scaring people into thinking they are going to be arrested for doing the right thing.
