A 33° Mason is someone who belongs to Scottish Rite, which is an appendant body of Freemasonry. You have to be a member of a Masonic blue lodge to join Scottish Rite; a blue lodge goes through 3 degrees and is the 'original form' of Masonry... the Scottish Rite and its 33 degrees are a lot newer, relatively speaking.
If you don't know anyone who is a Freemason, I suggest going to the George Washington National Masonic Memorial in Alexandria. It has a few exhibits that are interesting (and if you don't find them interesting then you know early on that Masonry is not for you, which is fine) and there would be people there to talk to as well.
I am a Freemason and enjoy it immensly, but it is not for everyone, as you can see from some of the above posts.
