I am not sure what choices you have living in Fairfax County, but Fairfax County Youth Football Leagues is one of the best organizations in the country. The league has a solid reputation and many of the clubs (Vienna, SYA, Chantilly, Braddock Road) have excellent local leadership. You are in good hands with FCYFL.

Look no further than Vienna Youth Incorporated - VYI. This is the best football organization in Fairfax County - has been since the '70's. They beat up on all of their neighbors in Chantilly, Fairfax, Reston, Herndon, McLean, Annandale, Braddock Road YC, etc.

Just ask Coach Bob Dix.

VYI and CYA are the top two youth programs in the area.

The FCYFL championships are this weekend at Madison HS. All weight classes will be represented. This would be a good time to check out the programs.

Not sure about VYI beating up on everyone since the '70's, but every one will have their own opinions.

When they have teams in central division with no team in the American division for that weight class, pretty easy to win most, if not all games. Also easy when they win a Central division title in Herndon and are required by the rules to move up to American the next year to take the entire team over to Reston as a Central team. Why not play teams that will be competitive with them instead of making sure they are in a division to cream most teams in their division? I guess winning is everything to some parents/coaches.

Do yourself a favor and sign your kid up closest to where he lives. That way he will likely play with kids he is going to play with in HS. Lots of jackasses around here take their kids to wherever they think the best program is and think they are grooming the next Heisman winner. Half the kids who they think are studs in youth football barely play in HS. Football is one sport where you can be average one year and great in the next couple of years and great as a youth and it wont materialize later on. Best bet is to have him play with kids he is going to school with etc.

Chantilly is great for putting together great teams with kids from everywhere, having them drop weight for the weigh in. That is ludicrous.

Most clubs have good programs and coaching, do yourself a favor and play close to where you live.

There are a lot of leagues to choose from. SYA (Southwest Youth Association) serving Clifton, Centreville and parts of Fairfax. CYA (Chantilly Youth Association) Serving Chantilly and to some extents Centreville.

I'm biased but those two are the best. Also, you have to look at what school these organizations feed into. SYA mainly feeds Centreville and Westfield with some going to Robinson and Fairfax. CYA feeds Chantilly.

Good luck.

agreed, with the traffic in the area and practices starting in the heart of rush hour chose a program close to your house. FCYFL is the largest in the country and there are plenty of organizations to choose from. I personally have done BRYC and now I am in FPYC. I switched because my kids were playing 150 and AB, FPYC practices at the same facility so no driving to different fields.

Granted that FPYC does have pretty amazing practice facilities, but the club as a whole promotes a "feel good, winning isn't important" attitude that does nothing for the competitve athletes in the club. FPYC has lost some of their best players to neighboring clubs (CYA, BRYC, and SYA) strictly based on the fact that those other clubs promote football fundamentals and skills and WINNING. I'm not saying that at this level winning is everything, but I've personally heard FPYC coaches tell players before a game that "winning isn't important today. What's important is that we go out there and just have FUN!". I've seen FPYC football practices that more resemble my wifes aerobics class than an actual football practice (45 minutes of "warm ups", no contact, shabby offense and defense, break early because its too cold for little Johnny to bear the chill). The few FPYC coaches that do try to instill intensity and personal accountability to the players (you know, in perparation for HS football and LIFE) are "talked to" and admonished by club higher-ups.

Bottom line is this, the club is run by a Varsity Coach from a local HS (they've won 4 games the last 2 years, btw) that doesn't foster a winning attitude throughout the club. The club has certainly grown but if you're looking for a competitve spirit along with great coaching, FPYC is not the club for you.

Welcome to Northern Virginia! Forget football, sign your kids up for Lacrosse! Not only do they get to hit opponents, they get a stick to do it with. Great sport!

appreciate your thoughts But I have coached in both BRYC and FPYC, your assessment is dated. FPYC is about fundamental football and player safety. It is also about community and family involvement. Make no mistake FPYC is here to win. The program has grown and become more competitive every year under Commissioner Barry. The coaches attend clinics throughout the year and success is here. The issue with FPYC is location. They are bordered by older, bigger, and traditionally more successful programs. Parents simply do not know much about them outside of Fairfax City. But that is changing, FPYC

My son didn't play organized football until he was a freshman in HS. He sure missed out on a lot of concussions and other avoidable injuries. I think he's a had a nice career...
