If you speak spanish, korean, or farsi fluently, and don't f-up the polygraph, you are in. In addition to the application process, you have to take a written exam, an oral interview in front of a panel, an interview with a pyschiatrist and a polygraph.

In the pysch interview they will ask you things like, "If you pulled over a friend or family member and found they had a small amount marijuana on them, would you arrest them or let him go."

For the guys, "Have you ever thought about being a woman? Do you like to dress like a woman? Do you like gay sex?"

And "You arrive on the scene of an accident before the FD, if two people were injured on the street, one very attractive with minor injuries and the other an overweight unattractive person with life threatening injuries, who would you help first?"

Those were the questions I was asked during my pysch interview. The answers are bust them, no, no, no and make sure the attractive one really has no serious injuries and then move on to the other person. (This is a trick question, because if you say the unattractive one first, they say, well congratulations, you just killed the attractive one!)

I passed and have been with FFX for the last 5 years.

Join the volunteer force, get all the certications you need, and while doing this network every chance you get. After being completely certified you should get in with ease. Takes about 2 years total as the Academy courses are set.

Being a volunteer can help. But when you're a volunteer and take 3 months and 120+hrs learning how to become and EMT, then 5 months and 300+hrs in fire school, IF you get hired, you're rewarded by having to take those classes all over again. Irregardless of how recent you got your certs. And yes, the training is EXACTLY the same.

Can you tell me about the training? And passing percentage. Also how often are classes held? Lastly, is training paid?

the training is held at the fire academy off of west ox road, if you are a paramedic you will also have training up in tysons corner (this might change soon). fire school is usually 18-22 weeks depending on several factors (class size, holidays, etc.) you learn everything from "this is an ambulance and this is a fire engine" to advanced firefighting skills, hazmat, ropes/knots, water rescue, vehicle extrication, driving the units, etc (the list goes on).

Every class is different with regards to passing percentage, they theoretically have a "2 strikes policy", if you fail any written or hands on test, you get one retest. if you fail that retest you are recommended for termination (some people get extra chances and others don't)

Classes are held when they need people which right now is good for you, a lot of people are set to retire in the next few years. And lastly, yes you are paid during recruit school. Uniforms and gear are all provided.
