I'm going to assume that you are a parent, since you identify yourself as "Cav Fan". I wouldn't be so direct with a kid.
You don't appear to understand what playing a sport, and specifically football, entails at the high school level. This is way beyond little league/pop warner everybody's little snowflake gets playing time and a trophy. High school coaches yell at players. I was yelled at many times when I played. I expect them to yell at my kid when he is not pushing himself to perform. It is a rite of passage. As these boys move from being kids to young men, they must learn that there are many situations in life where there are no second chances, no takebacks, and any effort below their best will not be tolerated. Sports at this level should teach that vital lesson. You excel for your team, your coach, and yourself, in that order, or you're not a player.
Under what circumstances would the players NOT keep quiet and do exactly what they are told when they are told to do it? A sports team is not a democracy, and there are few dictatorships more pure than that of "coach". You do what the coaches tell you to do or you find another sport or team. Players getting play time are doing well from the coaches perspective. A player not getting play time has only two options: respectfully approach the coach and ask how he can improve his game, or quit. It's an old axiom that coaches are not obligated to discuss playing time with players (or, God forbid, a parent), only what and how the player can improve.
I'm sorry but I laughed out loud at your statement "Creativity and independent thinking just was not tolerated this season". In football, and especially at this level, they never are. Football players are not expected to improvise and experiment during a game or practice. In football, everything is choreographed. Each position has a precise function to fufill, which in turn relates to the job of every other position, and the success of each play, and each game, and each season depends on how well the players execute at their position. There is a degree of "creativity" that players can demonstrate as a play unfolds, particularly the Quarterback and on defense which is reactive by nature, but with 22 players on the field, chaos would ensue and injuries soar if each player decided for himself what he would do.
Why do you think the coaches are "stuck in the 90s and the world has changed around them"? I'll go out on a limb here, but I suspect what you mean is that the coaches use a smash mouth offense when you (or your player) want to see West Coast. A team without a good running game first won't be successful for a variety of reasons, and it's kind of rare for a teenaged Quarterback to have the arm strength, vision, and football maturity to lead a team consistently down the field by passing.
I'm not maligning any of the players. I've heard that there is talent on the team and they're still boys after all. But I'm sure that the coaches are doing the best that they can with the kids who tried out. In the end this is a high school sport, their job is to teach, not win. If winning is your primary objective, put your kid in a WCAC school. Now THEY know how to "handpick" their players.
