WTW rules!

We got our butts kicked last night. Now that the season is over we can finally talk. Unlike last years seniors we were respectful and did not second guess our coaches in this site during the season. But now that the season is done its a different story. These varsity coaches are awful. If you could only hear how clueless they are on the sidelines during games and even during practices. Absolutely clueless. There is some talent at the freshman and JV level but with these guys running the varsity 2 wins might be the best record every year. 4,wins in 2 years is lousy so maybe the younger guys get lucky and the principal replaces the varsity staff. Who knows. Either way, us seniors will miss football but we won't miss awful coaching. Go class of 2013!

Yes, it's a sad season when each first down is celebrated like a touchdown.

The problem here is that the players do not respect the coaching staff. Coaching credibility is gone and it won't be back for next year. All the screaming and belittling of the players took its toll. The players figured out that being quiet and doing what they were told was the way to keep from being yelled at. Creativity and independent thinking just was not tolerated this season.

Sure, the easy solution is to replace the coaching staff. They are stuck in the 90s and the world has changed around them. The players deserve and demand leadership from the adults, which is not being provided. Short of replacing the adults, sending someone from social services to observe the practices would be a good start.

The players have potential, and no shortage of athletic ability. It's the coaches that have to bring it out. That did not happen this year.

When the trap play is your staple and the waggle is your way of shaking things up then its time to resign as a football coach in 2012. If a school like WTW is to have a chance at being even .500 with limited players, the coaching staff needs to be creative and willing to take risks often. This staff over the last 2 years has been the exact opposite - ultra conservative and not creative one bit (trap and waggle). You can't expect to win more than 2 games like that if your coaching at a school like Woodson.

Your football coach yelled at you? How did you ever deal with that?

That's what you get when you keep the black savages out of your lily white school.

You need bruthas if you want to win.

I'm going to assume that you are a parent, since you identify yourself as "Cav Fan". I wouldn't be so direct with a kid.

You don't appear to understand what playing a sport, and specifically football, entails at the high school level. This is way beyond little league/pop warner everybody's little snowflake gets playing time and a trophy. High school coaches yell at players. I was yelled at many times when I played. I expect them to yell at my kid when he is not pushing himself to perform. It is a rite of passage. As these boys move from being kids to young men, they must learn that there are many situations in life where there are no second chances, no takebacks, and any effort below their best will not be tolerated. Sports at this level should teach that vital lesson. You excel for your team, your coach, and yourself, in that order, or you're not a player.

Under what circumstances would the players NOT keep quiet and do exactly what they are told when they are told to do it? A sports team is not a democracy, and there are few dictatorships more pure than that of "coach". You do what the coaches tell you to do or you find another sport or team. Players getting play time are doing well from the coaches perspective. A player not getting play time has only two options: respectfully approach the coach and ask how he can improve his game, or quit. It's an old axiom that coaches are not obligated to discuss playing time with players (or, God forbid, a parent), only what and how the player can improve.

I'm sorry but I laughed out loud at your statement "Creativity and independent thinking just was not tolerated this season". In football, and especially at this level, they never are. Football players are not expected to improvise and experiment during a game or practice. In football, everything is choreographed. Each position has a precise function to fufill, which in turn relates to the job of every other position, and the success of each play, and each game, and each season depends on how well the players execute at their position. There is a degree of "creativity" that players can demonstrate as a play unfolds, particularly the Quarterback and on defense which is reactive by nature, but with 22 players on the field, chaos would ensue and injuries soar if each player decided for himself what he would do.

Why do you think the coaches are "stuck in the 90s and the world has changed around them"? I'll go out on a limb here, but I suspect what you mean is that the coaches use a smash mouth offense when you (or your player) want to see West Coast. A team without a good running game first won't be successful for a variety of reasons, and it's kind of rare for a teenaged Quarterback to have the arm strength, vision, and football maturity to lead a team consistently down the field by passing.

I'm not maligning any of the players. I've heard that there is talent on the team and they're still boys after all. But I'm sure that the coaches are doing the best that they can with the kids who tried out. In the end this is a high school sport, their job is to teach, not win. If winning is your primary objective, put your kid in a WCAC school. Now THEY know how to "handpick" their players.

Live with it and be glad the coaches are giving back their time, most of it not compensated to deal with all the crap that goes along with high school sports.

Just an experience of mine from back in the day. The coaches got a few extra bucks, very few, for coaching football. In return they got to teach all day then hang around until 6 getting the players ready and then drive the bus to away games . They would coach the game get the players back on the bus, drive back to school breakdown the equipment and clean up the locker rooms. I suspect their day started around 6am and ended at 10pm if they were lucky. My hat is off to anyone who takes on coaching high school sports, they arent in it for the money.

Some coaches are not giving back time, they are feeding their egos. There are plenty of great coaches who would step in if asked.

At some point the yelling becomes abusive. If you as an adult were there, you might understand.

Boys who are victims of this abuse shut down. They internalize the abuse - blaming themselves. We know that from interviewing those who failed legitimate suicide attempts.

By the way, this is endemic in many youth sports, not just football. Parents allow it because they don't know any better.

Maybe the Woodson boys were abused. Maybe not. Until someone objectively observes the men in charge, nothing will change.

So basically what I'm seeing here is some WTW athletes and their parents being honest and speaking the truth about the football coaches and program. Then the WTW varsity coaches respond using aliases and in the process of their response they insult their players. Nice job, coaches. Most of these HS football coaches have major complexes and try and compensate for that by pretending to be badasses and treat kids like crap. Nothing new. Most "bosses" don't do that unless some of these posters work at a gas station or something.

Here is what we know: The coaches at WTW stink. They volunteer their time but they still aren't very good at what they do. The kids don't like them. The team has won 4 games in 2 years. Unacceptable. The coaches aren't paid to win. But if the kids are getting abused each year that means the coaches aren't even teaching the sport correctly to begin with. The DSA should probably replace the coaches sometime this Winter and start fresh. If I remember correctly this coaching staff was hired last minute and there was controversy at the time. Move on and move forward.

As far as I know you do not have to be a teacher to be a football coach. Just pass the background check to make sure you are not a child molestor like Sandusky. So I ask you why doesnt one of these concerned parents step up to the plate and take over the program. What do you want for HS sports Bill Parcells?

You need to get into the real world. I can assure you I am not a coach nor do I work at a gas station. I make six figures and I earn every penny of it. While I have been lucky to have mostly decent bosses I have had some first class pricks esp in the government. They do not fear lawsuits or a grievance because they dont end up paying out at a settlement the taxpayers do. Of the places I have worked the government was the worst. They didnt have a profit to make so they didnt give a shit how poorly the place was run. Directors ran the place like dictators. If they got too out of hand they just transferred them elsewhere. Happens all the time.

Why are these WTW people complaining so much? A football coach with 2 plays in his play book and 4 total wins in 2 years doesn't seem that bad! Okay, it does sound awful, but join the club!

As a coach at the big college level, I can tell you I've enjoyed tremendous success running an offense with fewer than four plays.

I agree. A team with dominant players only needs a few plays and they will still win. On the flip side - if a team has 3rd tier players then it will take a little more creativity to eek out some victories. Coaching 101.

Gotta say that I enjoyed this one. We are talking about HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL right?

Let's be honest. Usually the difference between a good HS coach and a mediocre one is largely a matter of the talent that happens to fall into the coach's lap. A coach who lucks into getting a few good players will do well unless the coach himself screws up. Take away those few good players and most supposely "good" coaches end up with mediocre records.

It is humorous to read FootBallParent describe HS football in terms similar to political dictatorships. Well political dictators and HS football coaches do share one common characteristic. Both are depenedent for their success on the leader's ability to recognize opportunites and properly use the resources available, including the superior knowledge and insights of others.

Last year four coaches left for a reason . They simply voiced their opinions to run the offense better and they were chased away. As a football fan I followed some of their progress this year. Coach hogan was a very successful offensive coordinator at hayfield this year, Howells is now a middle school athletic director, and Cameron is an up and coming running backs coach at south county. These guys are good coaches and it is unfortunate that they are no longer there for just telling the head coach that the trap does not work on every play. My son actually went to meet with coach Howells this year and wanted to quit this year. After a couple hour conversation Howells convinced him to stick it out and don't quit. Taking the time to talk to our son when he has nothing vested in the program anymore shows true character. I will bet the current staff had no idea he helped a few kids stick it out this year. He did more for our son than any other coach has and as stated above he is no longer with the program and has admittedly said he may not want to coach football ever again after the season he had at Woodson. There are plenty of quality coaches out there and our kids deserve better.
