Why are these little scooters clogging up our roads
Posted by: Mind Boggling ()

Has anyone ever had traffic slow way down on a major road then find out it's a scooter that can only go about 30 mph that's causing the problem? Why are these mini bikes allowed on highways where the speed limit is 45 mph or above when they can't go that fast. In addition, they are not required to have license plates? If there are (2) people on these things it looks like the dumb and dumber scene where they are crawling up the mountain at a snail's pace while tons of vehicles behind them can't pass.

It's only a matter of time for someone to run over one of these things. You can hardly see them at night.

Ok I'm done. :)

I don't understand that shit either.

When I was a kid we all built mini-bikes with lawnmower engines on them. If we ventured out onto a subdivision street the cops were on our asses right fucking now. Hauled us home for a good scolding in front of mama.

Now these fuckers ride unlicensed, uninsured motorscooters on main roads with impunity. They call them mopeds but they ain't.

Is there any difference between a 20mph moped and a 20mph bicycle?

I got behind two of these the other day. About drove me nuts. Couldn't pass the damn things and had to wait until they turned off. I agree, they should not be allowed on the roadways.

Years and years ago a friend and I were riding a mini bike on a neighborhood road and got stopped by a cop. Not saying we shouldn't have been stopped (hey, we were young and stupid), but the damn cop called a tow truck! The look on the tow truck driver's face was priceless when he realized he was called for a mini bike. He ended up having to strap the damn thing to the back of his tow truck!

Hmm, yeah lesson learned. We didn't test it again in the neighborhood.

Bullshit! Hate those cheating fucks. Saw some bitch on Rt 50 on one going over 35 mph near Fairfax HS. Cunt didn't have a license plate.

Mopeds: Under Virginia law, a moped is a bicycle-like device
with pedals and a motor. The motor cannot be rated at more
than two horsepower or enable the moped to travel more
than 30 MPH. It is against the law to operate a moped faster
than 35 MPH or on an interstate highway. Any person who
operates a moped faster than 35 MPH is considered to be
operating a motorcycle which must meet Virginia registration
requirements. In addition, the operator would be required to
hold a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle classification or
a driver’s license restricted to operating motorcycles only.
Moped riders must be at least age 16 and obey all rules of
the road. They must carry some form of identification that
includes name, address and date of birth. As a driver, treat
moped riders with the same care given to any other vehicle
driver.
Although you do not need a driver’s license to operate a
moped, you may not operate a moped if you have been
declared a habitual offender and your license is suspended or
revoked for driving while intoxicated.

Mopeds

Definition

Virginia Code section 46.2-100 defines a moped as a vehicle that:
travels on three wheels or less, has a seat that is no less than 24 inches in height, measured from the ground to the middle of the seat, and has a gasoline, electric, or hybrid motor that displaces less than 50 cubic centimeters.

Restrictions

Operation of mopeds on any Interstate Highway System is prohibited by Virginia Law. Operation of mopeds on highways and public vehicular areas by persons under age 16 is prohibited by Virginia law.

No moped shall be driven on any highway or public vehicular area faster than 35 miles per hour. Operating a moped faster than 35 miles per hour is deemed by Virginia law to be operating a motorcycle, which requires you to title and register the moped as a motorcycle and obtain a motorcycle license.

Moped riders must carry some form of identification that includes name, address, and date of birth.

Although you do not need a driver's license to operate a moped, you may not operate a moped if you have been declared a habitual offender or your license is suspended or revoked for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Moped drivers are required to abide by the same traffic laws and regulations as automobile drivers. Detailed information on Virginia's traffic laws and regulations is available in the Driver's Manual.

In addition, certain local governments may impose restrictions on moped operation. Violations of the moped laws are considered a traffic infraction and convictions will appear on your driving record.

All DUI laws apply to mopeds operated on public highways.

Are micro scooters are simple in riding that have small wheels and easily fold up for comfortable carrying?

Not disagreeing or anything, but it is kind of funny to see folks ranting about this -- 30+ years ago, the same rants were being shared (not online!) when mopeds were new. Plus ca change...

I had one in 2005. You ARE required to have insurance, a helmet, license plates, and a regular driver's license. You don't need a motorcycle license. It cannot exceed 50cc, though in reality the engines can be "hopped up." I had an Aprilia SR50 Ditech that would do 55mph. The only problem was that if I started from a stop on a hill, it would take FOREVER to get up to speed. On the flat or downhill was good. I sold it because it just wasn't practical for this area, outside of early Sunday morning joyrides. Great gas mileage though. Well over 100mpg.
