Homless Students in Fairfax County

I'm curious about these homeless students? If they are registered in school, doesn't that mean they have a Fairfax County address for a particular school zone?

Are there really 2,500 homeless kids in Fairfax County Public Schools?
I just don't understand it.

Great question. If they are in a Fairfax County Homeless Shelter, like the Katherine Hanley Family Shelter in Fairfax, they are bused to either thier "base" school they attended before they became homeless, or they may choose to go to the school that serves the Shelter area.

They have a choice under Federal law, and Fairfax County payes for this transportation. Not sure how it works for Children who are in tents, etc. Will try and look that up.

What criteria are they using to designate a student "homeless"?

It says that 400 of those students "live without a parent or guardian."

I know some military families who move to a new duty station will let a child stay with a family friend in order to finish high school in the same school, and other situations like that, and they don't go to the trouble of legally designating a guardian. Is that student considered homeless?

How about if a family moves into a relative's house but has nothing to prove residency (utility bill, etc.)?

I suspect this statistic is intentionally loose with the definition. There's probably some funding issue that turns on this statistic.

Youd be surprised with the number of "homeless" students that are currently residing in hotels or other temporary housing. Many families move or are transfered to the area for work reasons and reside in hotels/motels while they try to find permanent housing.
My family lived in a motel for several weeks when i was in highschool while our house was still being built.

Yep there are tons of homeless students. As mentioned, most live in cheap motels paid for by taxpayers.

I used to take these students to school, or I should say TRY to take them to school. Most of the time they weren't at the stop on time and I had to leave without them. These motels are on main drags, so I couldn't wait a few minutes for them without blocking traffic.

Can you imagine? These trashy fuckers sit on their fat asses all day doing absolutely nothing and they can't even get their kids out to the stop on time. Probably doesn't matter if they go to school though, they're going to grow up to be just as worthless as their parents anyway.

@used to be a driver...There are many assholes in this world who could care less about thier children, etc. That, I will give you. But there are also many people residing in these hotels/motels, where ever...who deep inside are caring, loving people.

They have either Substance abuse problems, or true mental issues. They want to be contributing members of society..but simply don't know how to handle life at times. Just because someone is homeless, does not make them a bad person. I, are you, could be homeless one day.

Don't judge a book by it's cover. The Parent either does not care, which is why they don't wake up to get thier children on the bus...or they are alone with said child/children because they were witness to the murder of thier spouse in cold blood...the murder of another child of thier's in cold blood.

You just never know. Try and look at it both ways. Hope you have a great night.

We recently found out about a number of homeless student that are registered at our local school. It was very surprising to hear this. It is one of the schools that one would not expect to see this high of a number at. The majority of these students do attend school every day and are embarrassed by their situation. Most have parents who lost their jobs and can no longer afford their homes, cars or whatever it is they had. They dont ask for anything. They dont ask for food for lunch. Some of these situations the school wasnt aware as the families are embarrassed, afraid or dont know how to ask for help.

Don't be so quick to judge. As someone said above, it could happen to any of us. Be thankful for what we have.

I wonder why they would be embarrassed? Maybe because of judgemental, holier-than-though pricks like the jackass who makes judgements about people living in motels while he's driving a fucking school bus for a living.

The farther down the socio-economic ladder, the more judgemental people get. I guess because there's more people above them that make them feel like shit, so they shit on whoever they can.

Yeah, I'm judgemental. When people have ONE thing to do all fucking day (get their kid out to the bus stop) and can't do that, then I think they're shit.

Not all were like that, I had kids that were out there everyday with a parent waiting for the bus. Nice kids that were trying. I used to help them whenever I could. I gave them money so they could go on the field trip with the other kids, gave them gift cards that kids on other runs had given me, saved pens and pencils I picked off the floor for them, etc.

Oh, douchebag, I didn't "drive a bus for a living", I am comfortably retired and only drove to get out of the house and away from my old lady. But the FCPS bullshit got to me after a couple years, so I found another way to kill time.

Could those parents be out looking for work, or even actually at a job, and the kids, being kids, overslept or just didn't care to go to school?

I missed the bus a couple times when I was in grade school. It wasn't my parent's fault. My dad had to commute to the pentagon every morning and left before I even woke up, and my mother left for her job at the State Department 20 minutes before my bus time. 10 year olds get distracted easily. I'd sit down and watch TV or have a third bowl of cereal or something, and miss the bus. Big deal. My dad would have yanked you out of the bus and gone all special forces psycho PTSD on your ass if you made a remark like that.

You pass judgement on people based on your own prejudice, not knowledge of specific situations. I'm sorry that you have such a negative view of the world, where everyone else is fucked up. Empathy is hard for some people.

Last year I had a student on my bus whose family was living with friends. The friends lost their place which left this student and his family on the street. The family ended up in a shelter in the Herndon / Reston area. Personally I have absolutely no problem with this. What I do have a problem with is this: The student WAS living and attending school in the Route 1 area. AFTER ending up in the Herndon / Reston area the student was STILL attending the same school on Route 1. Maybe keeping the student in the same school is in the best interest of the student but transporting 1 student cross county twice a day in a taxi is ridiculous in my opinion. Guess who is paying for that cab ride?

I understand the reasoning behind that, but disagree with that "solution".

I went to 5 different schools because my father was in the military. I knew kids who had been to twice as many schools.

Of course, at the schools where everyone is in the same boat, being dragged overseas and to all kinds of duty stations every 1 to 3 years, it is not a big deal at all. I didn't have any problems until I moved to this area and had to deal with privileged pricks' entitled children who were fearful of "outsiders" and kept to their little cliques. Maybe the school system knows the kids in this area are such dicks, so they pay to transport kids rather than create problems from changing schools. But changing schools is not a big deal. It also should be more common nowadays for kids to transfer in and out of schools in this area, than it was in the 70s.

I would think it should be up to the parents: if they want their kid to stay in their old school, it's up to them. But if they can't provide their own transportation, then the kid goes to the school closest to where they are.

Large numbers in the county, but they spend all the cash on SOL's and free pizza for the tards who can't pass them, so they are left to fend for themselves.
