Internet options in area

I'm sure this has been asked already, but what are the options for Internet service around here? There's Comcast cable, Verizon DSL and Fios if they have it in your neighborhood. Are there any others? Is there some way to get DSL from other companies or something?

Verizon says Fios will come in 3 months in my neighhborhood. They have DSL, but they want me to sign a contract for good rates, and there are install fees and stuff. Not good if it will only be for a few months before Fios.

Wait for the FIOS. You actually get what you pay for, not like Cox where you get half of what you pay for.

you dont have to pay much for installation, i would get cable internet until FIOS is actually available. ive been promised FIOS for the longest time and it's still not here.

I've heard good and bad about FIOS. (It's not available to me so I use Cox which on the whole is pretty good but it does slow down during peak hours). FIOS isn't supposed to have that problem (the speed is constant), but a co worker of mine in Bethesda says her neighbors complain it slows down at night. But I also know someone else who has fios in Ashburn and loves it. I would take cable over DSL however.

I would just get cable until FIOS is there.. FIOS is much better than cable- not perfect but good.. we have the triple play.. With cable , you can sign up and pay month to month with no commitment (please verify this) meanwhile there is a year or two commitment with FIOS.. so- it'll be easy to just cancel later.. it was for us.. and I agree with PP that it oculd take longer than 3 months.. In our case, we saw the trucks, talked to the installers and called to ask and were told no- until finally one operator verified our neighborhood now did have fios.. signing up online to notify you by email when available.. we'll let's just say i've had fios for a year and no email (a waste of time)

Fios gives you better rates if you get a bundle with TV and phone. I worry about the idea of using fiber for phone, whether it is as reliable as copper. I think I saw a Verizon ad that mentioned 99.9% reliability; that's horrible. It means it goes down about 8 hours a year. I don't think my phone has ever gone out in my lifetime. I don't want to have an emergency and not be able to call 911 because my Fios isn't working.
