(CNN) -- More than 20,000 confidential Boy Scout documents will be released Thursday identifying more than 1,000 leaders and volunteers banned from the group after being accused of sexual or inappropriate conduct with boys.

The public release of the Scouts' 1,247 "ineligible volunteer files" from 1965 to 1985 will not contain the identities of the boy victims and witnesses. The national files are being distributed with the approval of the Oregon Supreme Court by a law firm that won an $18.5 million judgment in 2010 against the Boy Scouts in a case where a Scoutmaster sexually abused a boy.

Wayne Perry, president of Boy Scouts of America, said the group is deeply committed to youth protection, but he acknowledged that in some cases, the organization's response to allegations of abuse by volunteers "were plainly insufficient, inappropriate or wrong."

"Where those involved in Scouting failed to protect, or worse, inflicted harm on children, we extend our deepest and sincere apologies to victims and their families," Perry said in a statement issued Wednesday evening. "While it is difficult to understand or explain individuals' actions from many decades ago, today Scouting is a leader among youth-serving organizations in preventing child abuse."

I was in a local scout troop with a guy who grew up to become a big time pedofile. He had his picture posted all over his neighborhood once convicted and had to move away. He has been in and out of jail for touching kids, mainly, if not all, boys.

This guy was from Springfield---also molested kids in NC

You haven't heard anything from me about the ACLU president downloading kiddy porn because the whole thing makes me sick. Here's a refresher on the story, from ABC:

Federal agents arrested Charles Rust-Tierney, the former president of the Virginia chapter of the ACLU, Friday in Arlington for allegedly possessing child pornography.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by ABC News, Rust-Tierney allegedly used his e-mail address and credit card to subscribe to and access a child pornography website.

The complaint states that federal investigations into child pornography websites revealed that "Charles Rust-Tierney has subscribed to multiple child pornography website over a period of years."

As recently as last October, the complaint alleges, "Rust-Tierney purchased access to a group of hardcore commercial child pornography websites."

One wonders what law enforcement is doing with all the tax-payer funds they receive when there is such a thing as a "commercial child pornography" website, but then, I guess they caught the perverts using it.

The videos described in the complaint depict graphic forcible intercourse with prepubescent females. One if the girls is described in court documents as being "seen and heard crying", another is described as being "bound by rope."

I was in that troop around that same time. Actually I ended up quitting scouts due to a severe dislike of our scoutmaster at the time. I think I quit around 1992 shortly after this guy took over as our scoutmaster. This guy did some things that were very shady. I never saw him touch anyone, he just liked to watch kids shower. I quit right after I realized what was going on. Was a name ever relased for this perp? I wonder if it was the same guy.

OK I did some research and evidently the guy I remembered has moved to Maryland and was never busted but he should have been.

Yeah as I read that article over again, the whole thing about letting his select few special friends call him "Jimbo" really jumps out at me. I remember "Jimbo" being very selective of his special clique in Troop 1113.

Still if he was not the one prosecuted for child abuse then I wonder who was :/

Same name but different person. Trust me - the SM of 1113 got kicked out in 1994 for committing a lewd act at a national Boy Scout camp. That Jim Eaton was never married (at least as of his departure) and the article says the Jim Eaton in Frederick has kids that are 21 and 24 years old and has been married 30+ years. I was in 1113 and I too noticed how he liked to shower with the Scouts at summer camp and he was adamant that everyone shower naked instead of wearing swimsuits. I know the Boy Scouts wouldn't be stupid enough to let him back in, let alone honor him with the Silver Beaver (what a stupid name) award.

Anyway enough about that jerk. So it sounds like you were in 1113 around the same time as me. I was in the Penguin patrol, how about you?

ScoutQuitter - I don't know what exactly happened to the guy, but I hope he got locked up for a long time. I still remember seeing him get hauled off by BSA brass. What he did was wrong and I'm glad he got busted.

Anyway, I think I joined 1113 somewhere around 1992, give or take a year. I had been in another troop previously but they had a leadership change and no one liked the new SM. I'll have to see if I can track down exactly when I came in, but it was after Jim had taken over as SM. Who knows, maybe our time did overlap a bit. I too was in the Penguin patrol - what a small world. PM me if you want and maybe we can chat more about this.

The Boy Scouts organization has told a Seattle-area church that it can no longer host a troop because the church has vowed to keep a gay man on as troop leader.

The Boy Scouts of America said Sunday that it was contacting leaders and parents of the children in Troop 98 and its affiliated Cub Scout pack to tell them that Rainier Beach United Methodist Church is no longer authorized to be a charter partner.

Boy Scout troops must have a charter partner, which often offers a place to meet and financial support. The scouting organization bans gay adults from membership, and an openly gay man, Geoff McGrath, runs the troop at Rainier Beach.

“Because the church no longer agrees to the terms of the BSA chartered organization agreement, which includes following BSA policies, it is no longer authorized to offer the Scouting program,” Deron Smith, a Boy Scouts spokesman, told NBC News in an email. He added that the organization was “saddened by this development.”

The BSA’s top leader in Seattle has told parents that a local community center has offered to take over the pack and troop.

Rev. Monica Corsaro of the church outside Seattle said the move was expected, but she said that her congregation’s anti-discrimination beliefs were not being respected.

She also called it a “unilateral decision” by the BSA and said that the church was not consulted. (The BSA said it called Corsaro; she said she could not talk last week during the busy Christian Holy Week holidays.)

“Breaking us up like this seems to go against everything the Boy Scouts is about,” Corsaro told NBC News. “It seems to me that when you are in a dispute with a partner you try to work it out with the partner. It’s very clear we’re not viewed as an equal partner.”

Corsaro said the church would still offer a youth program but had not had a chance to discuss what that would be. About 15 boys participate in either the troop or the pack.

NBC News was reporting on Troop 98 and its Scoutmaster, McGrath, in late March when the Boy Scouts revoked McGrath’s membership as an adult leader. The BSA said because McGrath was an openly gay, he could not participate in the organization. Corsaro said at the time that her church would keep McGrath on in his role as Scoutmaster.

The Boy Scouts has grappled with its controversial membership policy barring gays in recent years. In an historic ballot last May, its 1,400-member National Council voted to allow gay youth — but not adults — to join Scouting starting this Jan. 1.

Troop 98 got its start not long after that contentious ballot. Clergy in McGrath’s Seattle neighborhood wanted to start a youth program because there were few in the area, Corsaro said. The clergy reached out to McGrath, a member of the Methodist Church, to ask whether he could lead a Boy Scout unit.

McGrath, a married Eagle Scout, hesitated because he worried that his sexual orientation would sink the effort. He said he didn't hide his sexual orientation from Scouting leaders, but Seattle’s top BSA official told NBC News that she never knew he was gay.

McGrath is believed to be the first gay adult to be booted from the Boy Scouts of America since last May’s vote. He said Sunday that he was “shocked” by the BSA decision.

“It’s just so astounding to me that they would take this tiny, small issue and dissolve two units over it without having a proper conversation with the pastor,” he told NBC News by phone.

The gay fathers of a child who joined Troop 98 after NBC's article said they had received a letter from the BSA’s top leader in Seattle with the offer to transfer to a troop at a local community center. One of the fathers, Kevin Reed, said they had no plans to go elsewhere.

Their son, Adrian Benitez, 14, said: “I don’t feel too good about it because it’s really offensive to my dads and Geoff.”

Saw post about Richard Lawrence in troop 1346. What year was that? Same name was scoutmaster of troop 882 (not sure of number) back in 1980 or 1981. I can confirm he deserved to be locked up.

1346 was my troop right around that time (87-90). The name sound familiar but I hav no recollection about anyone like that or anything weird (and I didn’t repress anything, that’s for certain). Maybe I’ll ask my parents. Coulda been it was all over my head.

Most are harmless and some used to have a son in the program but who is now off to college, etc. They choose to continue to volunteer NP. The problem for eveyone however is that the pedos go for jobs where they can get close to kids. That's why background checks are required now for these kind of positions.
