You are "praying" it comes back up? Man, you guys REALLY must have nothing better to do. Were some of you guys the last ones picked when teams were being selected in youth sports or something?

according to your own logic, that would be impossible. simply because bothering to post negatively about people who enjoy listening to the police scanner is about ten times more lame than listening to a police scanner.

Perhaps now is the time to apply your "economic stimulus payment" check towards a new police scanner. As the old saying goes: "Pay now, or pay later."

Listening to the scanner is awesome, just this past Friday there was a call for a noise disturbance right across from my street. As soon as I heard the call I looked outside and literally five minutes later three cops showed up.

Terry - Does the scanner cover all the districts or just a specific one?

To answer some questions:

1. The scanner is set to cover all police districts in Fairfax including tactical 2-way, narcotics/vice, etc. It also covers all fire and rescue activity in the county. There are a bunch of other channels scanned that have activity during special events (e.g., FFX county fair) or big emergencies/drills.

2. The scanner is a Bearcat BCD996 trunking scanner.

what's the difference between BCD996 and BCD996T?

is the handheld scanner, Uniden BCD396T, any good?

THANKS!!! :)

The model number of my scanner is actually BCD996T. The BCD396T is also a very good scanner. Either model will scan Fairfax County. Which one you get depends on where you will be using it. The only problem with hand-held scanners is that you may not get the performance that you need when operating it as a portable because of the antenna. At home I have my scanner attached to a large Diamond discone antenna and can get excellent signals from Fairfax, State Police, PWC, etc.

Fairfax uses the Motorola Type II SmartZone system with digital voice. The BCD996T can receive both digital and analog signals.

There did not seem to be a lot of users taking advantage of the aircraft band. I decided to stream the audio to www.liveatc.com where it will probably get wider interest. It is running in test mode right now but they should have it up on their site relatively soon.

The air traffic was on a separate channel, so you could listen to either the police or air traffic, but not both at the same time.

I've been trying to get my hand on a scanner for school down in texas.

& i've been digging through
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=safari&rls=en-us&q=site%3Acraigslist.org+%22trunking%22&btnG=Search

and a lot of the radioshack's pro-90series have been popping up.

do you have any suggestions?
I'm trying to keep the price range to about 50~150 on craigslist...

To get FFX PD you will need a trunking scanner. Other PDs may use a trunking system, it just depends on how big they are. One of the best scanners in this category is the Bearcat BCD996T.

i would love to get my hands on a Bearcat BCD996T
but something like that takes a biiig crap on my rather frail budget.

i guess what i'm more curious about is if McClennan County Pd is analog or digital.
and if that would affect my choices in what kind of radio i need to buy.

The Mclennan county Sheriff department and most of the small town PD/FD use the 150MHZ band for analog communications. Baylor Univ. security uses the 460MHZ band.
A good scanner to get for these would be a Bearcat BC350. They can be had for about
$50-$75.

If you need to scan Waco then you will need a trunking scanner.

terrysb, any recent issues with the scanner? A few of us tried to connect, one went through with no problem and others were getting "No reply from server"... is it possible some filtering is going on? One was on Comcast and the rest were on Cox, though the one who was working fine was also on Cox.

I hope we can get connected again as it is really a neat thing you've set up, thanks for any advice you can give!

The Emergency Radio App (the .99 version not the free one) does stream the Fairfax County Public Service channels. I haven't listened to it long enough to figure out how many channels it is scanning but the quality of the audio is reasonable.

When I put the scanner up about 3 years ago TeamSpeak was the main way most other streamers were doing it. The audio quality vs. bandwidth used is very good. It is also very reliable. I have experimented with other solutions and they all tend to have reliability problems. For example, I provide a stream to liveatc.com for the Dulles air traffic control. The streaming software for that is open source and goes down at least 3 or 4 times a week.

I'm open to suggestions but so far as lame a solution as it is TeamSpeak has more advantages than disadvantages.

Lol, IAD ATC (Dulles Air Traffic Control) comes in so loud at my location sometimes, as I'm right under multiple intersecting Flight Paths. For years I had one of those AM/FM/VHF handhelds from Radioshack (Still have it), and it's a great scanner for air traffic. I always manage to get surprised by an overhead transmitting flight from time to time, as the distant transmissions require me to turn up the volume, then out of nowhere it's like I have somebody shouting down into my house from a freaking loud speaker lol.

The site should be accessible now.

The iPhone application is actually pretty decent and covers the Fairfax PD well. There is a slight background noise while it is scanning but the audio is generally good.

I have my scanner set up to scan a number of channels not covered by the iPhone app. For example, I also scan Vienna PD, Fairfax City, Herndon, and also the special channels used by Gang, Narcs, etc.

Dang, that sucks. On that iPhone map, what exactly is the Fairfax County Public Safety scanner playing? It is the PD or is it something?

It's playing a channel from dispatch, and various calls. Not sure if it's just one channel or not, but constant chatter.

There is an iPhone app called phonespeex. It let's me connect to the server but I can't hear anything. It says it needs to be a teamspeak 2 server with the speex codec. Terry can you create another server using that codec?

Yep just the other night I heard a call about teens littering in my neighborhood. I grabbed my 8 cell mag light, whistle and Members Only jacket and went out Code 4 response ( I peddled my 12 speed in super fast mode). When I got there I observed two fast food wrappers and a discarded used condom. The DNA test came back unconformable due to the taco sauce cross contamination, but that was definitely Real seamen in that condom because it tasted salty. My investigation was complete at 1100 hours.

So did this Radioreference thing replace the old Teamspeak or are people using it because Teamspeak no longer works?

The Fairfax Police and Fire Scanner is now back online. During the last set of T-storms a piece of equipment got fried.

Note that this system is only compatible with Teamspeak V2 which can still be downloaded from the Teamspeak site. We will upgrade to V3 when the iPhone version is upgraded to work with that version.

Radioreference.com is so much better than the teamspeak scanner. They have separate police and fire/rescue channels so if something cool is going on with the police, it's not interrupted and stepped on with the annoying three loud ass beeps that are followed by an ems dispatch. Plus, you can listen to all the agencies in NOVA, or pick and choose (to an extent) If you go to the home page and click on the "live audio" tab, you can pick any state in the US and from there, the county and so on. Right now I'm listening to the MPD feed... always good for fights, warrants, shootings, stabbings, prostitution, you know, the good stuff. You can also choose whatever player you want to listen to it through (windows media player, itunes, realplayer, etc.) It's all free and easy as hell to use. Oh, and it's never down for days at a time and the audio doesn't suck. Here is the link to listen to the Fairfax scanner feed:

http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?ctid=2848

Just scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the speaker icon of the feed that you want to listen to. Enjoy.

I listen all the time to it, radio reference is the jam. i have it on my smart phone too. you can have a plus 5 minutes on your side to get out of that area. but all of the pigs have cell phones because its so much secure. public information is on are side. we still have some freedom of the press, the rights are still available to use these resources.

Terry you do good outreach for CERT. CERT rocks. Mcgruff outreach is good summer program you created to add CERT. National Out Night helps communitieis learn about police and do neighborwatch programs. Times to celebrate. Both have really good programs and CERT is happy to support thems both.
