THis is pretty gawdammed cool. She could have just bought a used motorhome, but I love the originality and use of space, plus this thing looks built to last.

I dunno how long I could swing living in that, but she owns it outright and it probably costs peanuts to heat or cool. No longer a slave to a huge mortgage either.

Home sweet home.

The house is built on a trailer and is classified as a camper, but it is built to meet current building code requirements for regular homes whenever possible. “All of the electricity is powered by solar, but we do have regular hookups,” McNair said. “All of the water can be off-grid, too. We have a tank, but we also have RV hookups for that, too.”

The home has a composting toilet, so “there is no black water.” For gray water, “most people can use a filtration system to water their garden or do their laundry,” McNair said. The refrigerator, stove and hot water heater are powered by two propane tanks mounted onto the tongue of the trailer.

The house is one of a kind. McNair used plans as guidelines, tweaking things such as the roofline, to make it “interesting.” She used wood from discarded pallets at her father’s hardware store in Newport for flooring and trim around the windows.

“I’ve been stripping down pallets and cleaning them and sanding them, and it has taken me forever,” she said. “I didn’t want to use new wood because it just seemed silly to me when his store has hundreds of pallets that sit around and they get thrown away and burned.” The seating bench in the main living area and cabinets, stairs and carpet tiles are all re-used pieces that were found at Habitat for Humanity ReStores.

But not everything is tiny in this house. “ I didn’t want anyone to feel like they were roughing it,” she said. “I really wanted a full stove and oven, if you want to bake cookies or whatever. I didn’t want anyone to feel it was a downgrade.”

While living in Fairfax, McNair began pursuing her masters degree at American Military University, part of American Public University System, an accredited online school which offers degree programs in environmental policy and environmental sciences, according to Tatiana Sehring, the senior strategic relationships manager of environmental sciences. The school is headquartered in Charles Town, W.Va., with 100,000 students in 100 countries. The school also has facilities in Manassas, so on Friday McNair and her father stopped to display the house there.

American Military Institute has gotten a bad rap for offering degrees and courses which are non-transferable. Their big racket is to get military folks to have the government pay for courses and then they end up with more or less worthless degrees.

I've heard all about those scams but never AMI itself. The Education Bubble is coming, but that is another topic/thread.

Looks like this girl learn a thing or two and took her studies seriously though.

You don't save as much energy with a smaller house as you might think. Heating & cooling is related to the surface area, which only scales with the 2/3 power of the house's volume. Plus I bet a house that small has thinner insulation than a normal house, making it even worse. And, the bottom of that thing is open to the air whereas the bottom of a house is in the ground.

If you're going to live in a place that small, you're better of in an apartment.

On the other hand, the mobility is a plus.

You would definately need to shield the bottom somehow, like most mobile homes, unless you plan on making it permenant somewhere. It's a nice hunting cottage, or weekend place you park out in the middle of nowhere. Maybe you dig a speptic tank for it and leave it out in the mountains. The idea of moving it around must be somewhat cost prohibitive. You'll need a big towing capacity and that takes fuel.

I'd be afraid of wind resistance/flow if it is indeed a trailer.

First off, it's AMU not AMI. Secondly, they're fully accredited and all their stuff transfers. This is the most respected fully online school for military folks and got checked by officials and is clean. People who have a grudge against online education are fine, but check your facts on specific schools first.

Yeah, it looks like Yet Another Bogus "School" that's taking advantage of lousy regulation to represent themselves as something they actually are not. Surfing over their web pages it was less than easy to find a disclosure that says something like "We can't guarantee our credits transfer anywhere; that's up to the other institutions to decide".

If we get another four years of Obama, we'll soon be as prosperous as Cuba or North Korea and a 210 sq ft. place will be considered luxury housing.

FYI, ALL institutions have this disclaimer. No one can dictate how other institutions evaluate transfer credits

You think the world is going to last four more years?
Reality check. Armageddon.

Read:
http://www.apus.edu/accreditation-licensure/

Cross reference the APUS/AMU accreditation to what GMU accepts here:
http://admissions.gmu.edu/transfer/transferCreditAccreditation.asp

Which confirms they ACCEPT, as will any other Institution. Students can transfer from NVCC to APUS/AMU just as they woudl transfer from NVCC to GMU. Only difference, you can not only achieve a Bachelor's, but you can also go for Master level courses and I believe some Doctorate level programs.

No.

You are going the wrong direction - bogus institutions are happy to accept TRULY-accredited instituions credits (as long as they can make enough money otherwiese). It is the other way around, the GMUs of the world NOT accepting bogus institution credits.

Somewhere on GMU's site is a list of accreditations they acknowledge.

Note, though, that even for THOSE instituions (none named - just the ACCREDITATION requirement) there undoubtedly are limits on credits accepted.

I can say with almost 100% certainty that the "accreditation" of AMU is not accepted (I'm on the worng computer to check).

I just linked you the evident to prove that it is accepted and you STILL think its not? You sir are a moron. Please prove to me otherwise. I know individuals that work at all of these Universities (NVCC, GMU, and APUS) and I know for a fact they are a legitimate organization.

Let me start by explaining a little bit about accreditation. If an institution has REGIONAL accreditation such as American Military and American Public University does then they have been approved by the highest accrediting body within the United States to offer educational degrees. George Mason is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools while AMU/APU is accredited by the Higher Learning Council of the North Central Association. These are basically sister accreditations as both are regional. There are 6 regional accreditation agencies:

Middle State Association of Colleges and Schools (Commission on Higher Education)
New England Association of Schools and Colleges (Commission on Technical and Career Institutions and Commission on Institutions of Higher Education)
North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (The Higher Learning Commission)
Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (Commission on Colleges)
Western Association of Schools and Colleges (Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges and Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities)

The schools that you need to be leary of are those that only have NATIONAL accreditation such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT), which evaluates career schools and technology programs and The Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), which evaluates distance education schools.

AMU/APU has BOTH National and Regional accreditation which means they have been through the highest scrutiny possible to ensure their learning outcomes and objectives meet the requirements for all universities and colleges. Additionally, specific specialized programs can be accredited to ensure they meet even higher standards. For example, AMU/APU's business programs (MBA, BBA) are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

As a student that has attended and graduated from both GMU and APU I can assure you that the credits from APU transfer to GMU and GMU to APU. Per GMU's webpage: "Transfer credit is granted only from regionally accredited colleges and universities. All coursework must have been completed during the period of time that the college/university held full regional accrediatation. Mason is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)." Since AMU/APU is regionally accredited, there is no reason that these courses will not transfer to GMU.

Please get your facts straight before running your mouth and spreading lies.

If you don't want to believe the facts, then please call GMU and ask. I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised to find out they will accept AMU/APU credits with acceptable grades with no issue. Unless you provide facts to back up the fact you say it's not true, then we have no reason to listen to you.
