Solar on house. Advice?

I saw a newscast on a guy who had solar panels on his roof and really low electric bills. Does anyone know reliable companies that install this? Are there financial incentives besides a lower electic bill?

I have a friend that uses solar panels as power source #1 for his hot water heater. His natural gas bills dropped by 80%.

I forget which he used, i can ask if you'd like.

I know someone who heats their pool using solar. I think he said it was 2500-3000 USD. It will bring the temperature up 9 degrees in 1 day. (on a sunny day).

Believe me, gas or heat pump pool heaters use a lot of energy.

Edit: The pump moving the pool water will consume electricity. However a pump can run as low as .2 amps which is the equivalent of a 25 watt light bulb.

I've heard that converting a house to solar can be expensive. In LA (Los Angeles) I've heard about quotes in the 20-40K range. Also, it's like doing a kitchen remodel. They don't just throw some panels on your roof. They've got to hook it all up and usually they've got to tear up some major parts of the house to do a comprehensive job. In LA, you can resell your surplus electricity back to the city. I'm not sure you can do that here.

At the moment, you shouldn't install solar panels if you are looking to save money; you won't. But if you've got money and want to spend some to help the environment, do it.

it would seem to me, that your pool, when in the sun, gets heated by solar energy for free.
