We're all screwed in this area. Get ready the Fairfax County to start cutting more police and fire.
WASHINGTON (CNNMoney) -- Federal workers have weathered a two-year pay freeze, increased health insurance premiums, and threats of more cuts from Republicans.
Now their jobs are in jeopardy. Some 277,000 workers -- 14% of the federal work force -- could lose their jobs in the next 12 months if the U.S. cannot avert the so-called fiscal cliff, according to a study by the Center for Regional Analysis at George Mason University.
If Congress doesn't act by Jan. 1, the U.S. will go over the fiscal cliff, triggering about $1.2 trillion worth of spending cuts over a decade.
The cuts could slice some 48,000 federal workers from civilian defense jobs and 229,000 from federal jobs.
No one knows exactly how the cuts would fall. The White House's Office of Management and Budget has released figures on how much is slated to be axed from each agency. But it has yet to identify programs at stake.
Jobs could be slashed from food inspections, health institutes, national parks and even air traffic control towers staffed by Federal Aviation Administration employees, said Stephen Fuller, director of the Center for Regional Analysis.

First, it's not going to happen. Government workers may get furloughed for a brief time while Congress figures out how to kick the can down the road. We'll hear cries that the sky is falling from the Feds, then they will be retroactively paid for their vacation. Contractors, on the other hand, will be screwed. Same old same old.
Second, even if we went over the 'fiscal cliff', the Government always cuts contractors first, not it's own staff. In that case it's possible that Government workers might have to actually work for a change, but that's not a bad thing.

We could also do without a lot of the garbage malls, grocery stores and restaurants in the Northern Virginia area. For too many that benefit from the fat federal government employees spending tax dollars.
We also don't need all those home contractors either! It's time we thin the heard in Northern Virginia with federal and military cuts!
Ship military personnel to small town bases that need income and are far cheaper economies.

When we grew up in the 60's a government job was the last resort when the real world didn't want you,i.e. loser. Nobody admitted to working for the government.
Yes, I was a government employee when I was drafted. ETS up, I packed and left with a few souvenirs, and plied my trades elsewhere.

The question is . . . will there be a job waiting for them in the private "real" world you speak of . . . and how long will it take to get it . . . and how much will it pay? Will it include come kind of health care benefits (just in case Romney gets elected)?
And can we get those wonderful 1960's back complete with lower wages for the CEO's and higher taxes on those incomes as well? We did try the worthless war option, but it didn't do the trick.
As for the pencils and staplers---I would say the government workers are way underpaid if they have to resort to taking those items in order to make it. A far cry from the golden parachutes the "real" world gives out.

Think again, the county police receive plenty in Federal grants. There were also officers hired under Clintons program where he bragged he hired 100,000 more police. What Federal employees have that others dont is tenure. Once you get past the probabtion period it is impossible to fire them. I have seen them steal government property, lie on overtime and drink while working. They are still holding Fed jobs.

FFX county could certainly shed a few county cops.
There were 3 cruisers, including car 4205, eyeballing citizens at the Reston toll plaza this morning. Well, one was eyeballing cars, the others were just slacking off.
I appreciate such a visible waste of my tax dollars. Sure you guys needed three cops, granted, one of theM was barley 5 feet tall and could barely see the windshields. Lots of law breaking going on at the toll plazas, and so conveniently located.

Dont worry Romney will cut everything BUT the military - he wants to increase that. Corporations will still pay lobbists, so our place at the Federal trough is assured.
AS for the the Fed workers - the contractors will get cut first. The Fed workers will be short-manned, overworked with no cost of living increase. The will take it and like it because working for the Fed is still a good job. Those with less seniority will be fired and jobless. Houses will be lost, families relocated.
This is pure capitalism - this is what is supposed to happen. Maximize corporate profits. Period. You want something different turn off the football game and protest.
