As far as I know he still lives there.

Whoever lives there is definitely important enough to be able to send his guards out onto Chain Bridge Rd with assualt rifles to stop traffic so his motorcade with blue and red flashing lights can leave the compound. I've gotten stuck there a handful of times coming home from work and watched them hold traffic for five minutes, and then watched three black SUVs with police lights speed out of the place.

I still say that people who live in rowhouses, even upscale ones....can't afford an equally upscale detached residence. Mind you, I'm talking about rowhouses in the suburbs. To me a true townhouse are historic residences of the type you find in places like Georgetown that start in the low seven figures. Urban settings where there are few if any detached residences available.

You obviously don't know what you are talking about, then. Either you are a kid living in mommy and daddy's McMansion, or you are mortgaged to the hilt in a house you shouldn't be able to afford.

You have no idea what kind of house I can afford. I chose to live in a townhouse in McLean for several reasons:

I work a block from the white house, and proximity to DC was the biggest factor in choosing my home. I have a 10 mile, 20 minute drive into work

I wanted a house that was appreciating at a rate above the overall average for this area. Kings Manor was going crazy when I started watching several neighborhoods in McLean and North Arlington. When I started looking in 1998, they were selling for $275,000. When I bought in 2002, I paid $400,000. They peaked at about $765,000 16 months ago, and are selling for between $695,000 and $740,000 now

I wanted a low-maintenance, moderately sized residence that would make a great rental property when I moved up to a larger property as I approached retirement (still many years away)

I wanted to be within walking distance to grocery, banking, dry cleaners, restaurants, etc

I wanted to be inside the beltway, but close enough to a place like Tyson's Corner, or something comparable.



If I really wanted "nicer digs" I could very easily move to someplace a little farther out and get an acre or two, with a huge house and a 5 car garage, etc. But I don't want the maintenance costs, the commute and everything that goes with that. Heck, If I wanted to take on a mortgage again, I could take my 100% equity in this "row house" and buy a small estate along Gtown Pike, a mile or two closer to DC. But I like living in my poor man's row house, the only drawback is that I can't blast my 1,000 watt surround sound system at 3am without waking up the people I share a party wall with.

Your guess about me is remarkably close to the mark! I DO live in my daddy's house! It's not a McMansion, though (pretty shabby, actually)...and it's on land purchased by my Granddaddy in the 1920s. The property is considerably over 10 acres...I would rather not divulge specifics due to privacy concerns.

My sister's house is also on the property and could be considered a McMansion...hell, her barn is bigger than my, er..daddy's house!

While I still call it daddy's house....daddy passed away in 1990 and it has been my house since then.

I wish I could tell you the unsolicited offers sis and I received for our land during the real estate boom....absolutely CRAZY! But this property will stay in our family, period.

I'm sorry to hear you are unable to crank your monster stereo up due to being cheek to jowl with the other units....you could blow out your speakers at 3:00 am at my house and NOBODY would know. You could also jump on my Honda Rubicon 4-wheeler at 3:00 am and take a drunken spin down through the woods....it's a gas!

Though the farther you get down River Road, the more you run into $40 million properties. I went to one party at a Nextel exec's house on 40 acres, with a main house, apartments over the 5 car garage for the groundskeeper, maid and cook, and a pool house with another apartment for the nanny, and a 12 stall stable. Thanks to Stephen Colbert, we know that Jeff "Skunk" Baxter - sometime/once-time drummer for the Doobie Bros - lives in Fairfax County.


Jeff "Skunk" Baxter is actually an amazing guitar player who played with Steely Dan and The Doobies and is also a missile weapons consultant. But one of the original drummers for the Doobie Brothers, John Hartman, used to live in Fairfax County and graduated from JEB Stuart High School.

Nah, the guy throwing the party definitely wasn't cleaning pools for a living. He was most certainly a Nextel executive.

I know because I went with a tech writer for a financial magazine and she introduced me to him.

I have been to parties at "mansions" in Potomac before that were actually rented for the party by some schmuck who got a big bonus and wanted to show off. But even those guys weren't pool cleaners, they at least had jobs where they might get a lucky $100k bonus, like a project manager for a defense contractor or something.

Jared Leto also went to high school in DC - Emerson - near Dupont. It was an accelerated school where 16 year olds graduated early, alongside 19 year olds who fucked around too much. John Wilkes Booth also went there.


Currently the most relevant and famous non-politician/non-athlete/non-reporter living in Fairfax is the Telly Award winner, Karlos Borloff, from "Monster Madhouse," as seen on "The Tonight Show."

I heard that Dave Chappelle lives in our area. Somewhere in the general vicinity of Tysons Corner. I've seen photo's of his home being built but never witnessed it myself. btw.. his house is GIGANTIC.
