Mustangs with loud exhaust

Do Mustangs with loud exhaust ever get pulled over? I swear the cops target the imports but rarely have I seen anyone get a noise violation for their Mustangs.

They should just on the sheer fact that it adds no functionality - only audible annoyance. What gets me is these fools hip-hopping around in these loud late model Honda Civics that are dressed up like they're from 2 Fast 2 Furious.

I own a VW, and let me tell you, all those random failures of electrical parts (windows, etc) were really fun. What great quality.

Oh and I love not even being able to change my own light bulbs because VW is so greedy they had to make them a dealer-replaceable part. A car you cannot do the basic services on yourself is pretty much just an expensive rental, IMO.

Of all the cars ive ever owned my VW gave me the least amount of trouble! I own a really old Beetle so i dont have a problem with replacing parts myself. Must be the newer models.

Now that I think of it I like hearing those loud ass cars coming up on me. That way I can slow Waaaaaaay down and let em stew when they cant zoom around me. At least the loud exhaust is an early here comes an idiot in a car too powerful for him to control alarm.

Don't forget that you'll probably need a VAG-COM to do any troubleshooting on them when the check engine light comes on. A regular OBD-II scantool won't be much help.

hmm... someone should make a universal custom computer for cars... so you can get real diagnostic data worth having.

Depends...

They used to get pulled over until the Police dept. got their new "easy targets."
The Coffee can cruisers are easy targets due to revving their engines high and sustaining that, without much momentum - at least the Stang's moved out!

Anyways, here is the VA Code on the matter:
§ 46.2-1047. Muffler cutout, etc., illegal.

It shall be unlawful to sell or offer for sale any (i) muffler without interior baffle plates or other effective muffling device or (ii) gutted muffler, muffler cutout, or straight exhaust. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate on the highways in the Commonwealth a motor vehicle equipped with a gutted muffler, muffler cutout, or straight exhaust.

(Code 1950, § 46-306; 1950, p. 54; 1958, c. 541, § 46.1-302; 1964, c. 628; 1989, c. 727.)

And here is what is looked for during a VA State Inspection -

19VAC30-70-300. Muffler, exhaust system and trailer venting.

A. Flexible tubing may be used anywhere in the exhaust system.

B. Inspection of exhaust system does not concern noise level.

C. INSPECT FOR AND REJECT IF:

1. There is any leakage of exhaust gases at any point in the system. Do not reject "built-in" drain holes in muffler or tailpipe.

2. A muffler or catalytic converter has been repaired in any manner. The exhaust pipe may be welded to the muffler or catalytic converter. Holes or cracks in the exhaust line have been repaired with a patch or caulking.

NOTE: If a vehicle is inspected that does not have a muffler, the inspector should explain to the customer that although the vehicle will pass inspection without a muffler, it is a violation of state law for the vehicle to be operated on the highway without it.

3. Tailpipe opening is mashed or pinched.

4. Brackets are loose, broken, or missing.

5. The exhaust system fails to discharge the exhaust to the rear or sides of that part of a property-carrying-vehicle that is designed for and normally used for the driver and passengers and to the rear or sides of the passenger and trunk compartment of passenger vehicles.

D. Trailers and semitrailer venting. Inspection of trailers and semitrailers will include a visual inspection of the venting of cooking or heating appliances to the outside of the trailer or semitrailer to determine if the heating and cooking appliances are adequately vented to the outside to prevent the asphyxiation of occupants of any trailer or semitrailer by the operation of the heating or cooking appliances.

1. Reject the trailer or semitrailer if not equipped with a vent or venting system to the outside.

2. Reject the trailer or semitrailer if there is any complete or partial obstruction of the vent or venting system.

Statutory Authority

§46.2-1165 of the Code of Virginia.

Historical Notes

Derived from VR545-01-07 §30, eff. May 1, 1990; amended, Virginia Register Volume 10, Issue 8, eff. February 9, 1994.

Amended, Virginia Register Volume 21, Issue 4, eff. September 22, 2004.

Effect of Amendment

The Sept. 22, 2004 amendment, in par. C 2, added the note paragraph; and, in par. C 5, changed "which is" to "that is" and deleted the comma following "passengers".

I know, I know - but they do know what to look for if they wanted to be a stickler...

Also, noise is of no consideration for state inspections - even the fact no muffler may be in place is not reason enough to reject.

I have been pulled over 2 times - once in my car by the VASP who listened to reason...
Once on my Motorcycle by someone who insisted on testing it w a Db meter... It was stock :(

you know you're having a slow year as a cop if you find yourself, decibel meter in hand, measuring the noise from some dude's muffler. Pathetic.

...it was in Old Town back in 1994 - the Police were reponding to noise complaints along King St. from Harley bikers revving in town. Mine was a CBR...

Hahaha... NO they dont!

its because they only ticket loud toys. and most admire the domestic cars since most cops are "good ol-boys". Ive never had any noise issue with my Mustang, even when revving the engine next to cops at the stoplight. (but i did hear a stoopidly loud stang exhuast on rt. 7 - 2 weeks ago)

I did get pulled over for a too loud exhuast in my chevy, but once i showed him the paper-work that it was installed by a professional shop, and was 50 state legal he let me off with a written warning. havent had any issues since then like a yr ago.

Only the paraniod will Survive...

I think it has to do with the pitch, more so than the volume. The higher-pitched the exhaust, the more annoying it is, and probably the more likely it is that a cop will pull it over for a noise violation.

True that. My friend has a z06 corvette with full aftermarket exhaust, headers, a huge cam...the vette is louder than a 747 it seems, yet he never received a ticket.

Nothing but smiles and even thumbs up from cops.

But throw a chrome exhaust tip on a honda civic...bam! $120 exhaust ticket, LOL

sound is purely by design - car or bike - they would all be outrageously loud without, and the sound is CHOSEN BY ENGINEERS to fit the customers

no, those aren't legal in all areas, neither is tinted driver's windows that prevent defensive driving (ability of somone oncoming to see which way the driver is lookig IF NOT the drivers eyes and eye lashes)

but all kinds of people are on the road with dark tinted driver's windows (popular in other states, illegal in Virginia) these days - and who gets away with it seems to be political

legally, there must be a complaint by an injured part NOT the police upon loudness

ie you might have a parade car - no one complains it's a parade: prognosis - it is NOT legal to give a ticket

ie, your vehicle is loud but no neighbor has yet complained (infact some might be harboring the same type vehicle) IS ALSO NOT ILLEGAL

ON THE OTHER HAND - driving violations, they involve frequent death, are allowed to be ticked by police without a citizen complaint

could sound be illegals? absolutely. if citizens cannot hear an oncoming ambulance or such, it's automatically illegal

Tickets for loudoun exhaust are a secondary infraction. Need a real reason to stop someone before a ticket can be issued for loudoun exhaust.
