With Chief Mastin retiring in the near future (he put in his DROP paperwork awhile back), where do you think the Fire & Rescue Department is going to go to find its next chief? Inside, or outside the county? Technically Mastin was an outside hire, but he started and was brought up through the FFX system before leaving to be chief elsewhere.

Fairfax is not interested in getting a truly outside person, nor are they interested in getting any diversity at that level. Look for another pale, stale, male to fill the slot and someone who has ties to the department already.

The county can't look past itself. It will always hire someone wtih ties back to the county system and won't show any diversity with the top spot for some time.
