FAIRFAX, Va. - Streets in Fairfax County are getting more dangerous, according to a new report.
A report for 2007 shows overall crime jumping more than 6 percent compared to 2006, with violent crimes like rape and robbery jumping nearly 5 percent.
There is good news, however. There were fewer murders in Fairfax County in 2007, down from 19 to 13. But so far in 2008, there have been nine, compared to just two at this time last year.
The county had 95 rapes in 2007, compared to 73 in 2006. Property crimes went up by more than 6 percent, but burglaries dropped from 1,580 to1,409.
In all, Fairfax County Police say there were 18,156 crimes in the county last year, compared to 17,108 in 2006.
The crime figures seem to buck a national trend. The FBI reports that violent crime nationwide dropped 1.4 percent in 2007, reversing two years of an upward trend.
