I don't think so, but it's close. There aren't any Lincolns for sale on the side of the lot :)

I worked for Gil Campbell a couple of times in the late 70's. First as a gas attendant, then as a mechanic.

Gil was a really good man, but that manager he had was an asshole.

They had a fire, but I think the complex is still there. That intersection is.

Lived right down the street from there for several years on Kara Place.

As a kid I almost lived at the Gino's in Leesburg. Anyone remember the "Sirloiner" ? Step aside quarter pounder :)

They also carried Kentucky Fried Chicken and their sides and stuff. That was back when they nice little soft rolls instead of today's hard hockey-puck biscuits.

Woolworths? There was also a wild Bar there at one time. I used to live across the street from this strip mall in the 60's on the other side of Route 7.

Old Burke Photo

I grew up in Falls Church but in 1963 my grandparents moved to Red Fox Forest (off of Braddock opposite Kings Park Shopping Center). My grandfather was an avid fisherman and it didn't him long to discover Burke Lake (very primitive back then - nothing more than a bait shed located on the site of what today is the lake's marina).

On his way to the lake he would often stop at Carson's Trading Post (before it became the old house 7-11) across from the fire department to buy bait. He eventually met Roy Carson, the Burke VFD Fire Chief, who told him about other good fishing ponds in the area. As I always enjoyed fishing with my grandfather, I would often ride along in his well-worn '64 Nova, so I got to meet Chief Carson and check out all of the station's fire trucks. Pretty exciting stuff for a 9 or so year old kid!

I found this photo of the second Burke Fire Station online. From the age of the equipment parked in front, I'm guessing this was taken in the mid 1960s. The Burke VFD website's history page mentions that this station opened in 1963.

Thank you for posting this picture. This is my only recollection of Burke, when as a teenager from Arlington in the mid seventies we (friends) drove to Burke one night to rescue our friend who had just moved there with his family. All I remember was this country store that was a 7-11. I couldn’t believe how rural it was to even get there. Lots of dark. Lots of trees. Lots of winding roads. It was truly the boondocks. Sadly, the boy committed suicide shortly after they moved there. I never understood why he would do that. Too country for a suburban boy, I guess.

Thanks again for posting the picture. I knew I had remembered it correctly!

Causeican - that's a great overlay map. I had forgotten about the government looking at this area for use as an airport even to the point of purchasing the land. Does anyone know if Burke Lake was created before the government purchased the land?

The lake is not shown on the surplus property sale map, so maybe it wasn't created until after the surplus sale in 1959.

Penn Daw Lanes (Duck Pin / later converted to half duck / half ten)
Skor-Mor Lanes (Arlington)
Falls Church Lanes (Duck Pin)
Ten Pin Coliseum / Alexandria Bowling Center (closed less than a year ago)
Rinaldi's Lanes (Arlington)
Bowl America Duke / US Bowling (Alexandria City)
Mclean Bowling
Fair Lanes Baileys Crossroads

From link Silas Burke posted above;
Description
.... When an alternate site in Chantilly was chosen, almost 900 acres of land formerly designated for the airport passed to the Fairfax County Park Authority. Burke Lake and Burke Lake Park were built on that land.

Love that "white fang" pic!

Back then the police really did "protect and serve", not "harass and collect revenue for the county".

Many a time I got pulled over by them and was let go on minor infractions (open beer, expired plates (I had honestly forgotten to renew it was by a day or 2), etc)- today they are ready to impound your car over an expired inspection sticker and lock you up for having one beer!

Those were the days!!

Asian guy sold us the beer, we had fake ID. The Hampton Rd. rope swing had a nasty stump near the shoreline, I saw some big dummy lose his grip and raked his back pretty bad. Sometimes we hiked on land to the rope swing, other times we swam across the lake to get there.

Don't remember that, but I got my drivers license there in 1966. It was not a DMV office like we know today. I think it was called a license agency, sort of run under a contract with DMV for license plates. Traveling examiners (when they wore cop uniforms) gave tests there a few days a week. When they opened a regular DMV office in that shopping center on Lee Highway (where Hooters is today) in '68 or '69, the office on Main Street closed.

Also in that building in the pic, was the Selective Service (draft board). Trying to stay out of 'Nam, I appealed my 1-A classification. My hearing was right there in that building. They denied my appeal so I joined the Navy, LOL.

There was a bowling alley in the basement in the 1960s, then the Alibi restaurant in the late 1970s through most of the 1980s. My wife and I had our wedding reception there in 1985 when it was still the Alibi. After the Alibi, there was a pretty good Indian restaurant there. On the street level, on the left side, there was an office equipment store that sold both new and used typewriters. I bought an old IBM Selectric from them somewhere in the late 70s. I think there was also a copy shop in there at one time.

Old mentioned the draft board being here. They might have been at one time, but by 1973 the draft board had moved a block down 123 and was in the basement of the old post office building. I had a student deferment but got lucky in the draft lottery that year and my birthdate was assigned #294. The national selective service indicated that they would only draft up to #225 that year so I requested reclassification to 1A and sat out my year of eligibility without (much) concern about being called up for 'Nam duty.

An old issue, but a great story: The Old Fairfax Theater & Sharpe’s Field, by William Page Johnson, II, pages 9-10 of The Fair Facs Gazette, Volume 3, Issue 4, Fall 2005. http://www.historicfairfax.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/HFCI34-2005.pdf

It reminds me of when I was a kid. We use to have such fun. Especially, out after dark.

The Hampton Rd. rope swing had a nasty stump near the shoreline, I saw some big dummy lose his grip and raked his back pretty bad. Sometimes we hiked on land to the rope swing, other times we swam across the lake to get there.

I swam across the lake to get their too. Been a long time ago summer 1970.
And we stopped at Reid's store a old wooden place on 123 on the left not far from Hampton Rd for Cokes and Sweets on the way down. I think that place closed soon after but the building was there many more years. There's some tall large trees at the at spot today, all that's left.

Wasn't House of Lance (or something like that) a hair salon at the far end of Cardinal Forest Shopping Center in West Springfield, close to the church? It was next to a dry cleaners if I remember correctly.

House of Music was on the corner of the Springfield Plaza Shopping Center along OKM in main Springfield. Springfield Plaza also had a Mr. Donut that we visited every Sunday after church.

I love these pictures!

House of Lance was owned by Lance Marchiafava.

I thought his original location was at the end of the strip shopping center in WS down from Giant and yes, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church just beyond the parking lot.

Some of the stores in this strip were Nortgern Virginia Bank(other end at Keene Mill and Rolling), then Kinneys (great window display), drugstore (Peoples?), Giant. Burger Chef was across the street.

I know this picture has been posted before, it is Tysons corner center from 1984.

A question for old time Tysons mall rats like me- Who remembers the giant mechanical coat rack they had there? I never used the damn thing but it sort of looked like a conveyor belt deal with some way your coat would get locked on there or maybe there was an attendant that secured the coats. I have a definite memory of that coat rack but not too many details.

Who remembers the names of all the courts of the original Tysons?

Fountain court- had to stop with the fountains because of fear of Legionnaires' disease.

Aviary court- had to be done away with because of fear of bird flu or something

Fashion court- that one was okay

Was there a Food court? I know they had Lums, Farrells, Hot shoppes, Roy rogers and I thought there was a Hardee's or burger king there at one time.

What were the other courts named?

Who remembers Bar mart with the live parrot?

Ritz camera?

Who remembers the Farrells ice cream employees that would run around with one type of ice cream dish that was brought out on a stretcher?

Orange Julius?

Am told the buildings all pretty much collapsed from deterioration but the main farm house was burned by FCFD training exercise.

Look at 28 in the picture with the circle where the farm was located - two lanes in each direction. I can remember when 50 and 28 crossed each other at an intersection that was controlled by a traffic light. 28 was two lanes and 50 was four lanes. There was a little church on the southeast corner.

I might have mentioned this before that my grandfather's brothers' land was taken by imminent domain for Dulles Airport. They were dairy farmers and the milk was taken into the city by the Washington and Old Dominion trains from Herndon.

The cows were too relentless for my grandfather, building homes seemed like a better option.

As far as why there are no farms in Fairfax anymore, the land is too valuable.

This photo was taken in the summer of 1967. Great picture of the '61 Ford Galaxie, and the '66 Ford Galaxie county police car.

Looks like the '56 Ford and the '64 Caddy met each other in the fender bender.

Okay, I give - why 1967 summer? Also, I thought maybe the Ford pick-up was just going around the accident. What about the 1950-something car on West Ox? Maybe the other car in accident is out of view.

The 1950-something car on West Ox Road is a 1956 Ford. To date the photo is simple enough.

First we look at the season of the year. It is summer. The folks in the '61 Ford have their windows down, and the trees are full of leaves.

Second we have the police car. It is a 1966. New model years were released in September of every year, so using that fact, the 1966 police car would not have been built until at least September 1965. Plus and it would have taken several months to set up the cars with lights and such, so that car would not be in service until early winter 1966.

Third we have the license plates on the cars. They are 1967 plates. Odd year plates are white plates with black letters, and even years are black plates with white letters. This pattern continued until 1972.

When the 1973 plates came out in early 1973 they were white with blue letters like we have today. Prior to 1973 everyone got new plates every spring, and there no stickers to deal with.

Black Plates One Year White the Other and a metal tag hanging on to the front plate saying what county you where in. A County tag. Before County Decals on the windshield. It was a huge waste till they got with it on the yearly stickers. But that said can you imagine what it would be like to be a cop back then, How much computerization at the DMV ??. Licenses with no pictures from many states. All they could do was call into dispatch for any info like if your car was stolen .Or a APB was out. Good strong men those old coppers were. Did not scare easy.. Like all of us old timers..we have been through plenty of it..in our time.

I really like that little coffee house attached to the Governor House.

Used to work at the Governor when I was in high school in the 70's. Three Chefs was the restaurant located there. Great pancakes and fried chicken. Motel was owned by the former sheriff of FFX John Taylor. Bill Page and Robertson who had a 5 and dime store in Arlington.

Good points. There were not so many people to contend with either. That makes a big difference. Different kinds of people, either Back then, you just understood things. Now you have to explain everything.

I grew up at the tail end of the hickory shampoo days, we learned a smart mouth caused headaches. By and large FFX LEOs were cool, usually scared the shit out of us and sent us packing, whatever mischief we were into. Honestly, we could near always out run them!

It's the remnants of Horsepen Farm... some of which were taken for the construction of Dulles Airport. There were still limited cattle and crop operations on the property (in the photo's) into the late 1980's. Don't know for sure if the main residence house was used for FCFD burning/training but that would make sense. It's still an interesting bit of property that will probably soon become another office for one of the biggie gov contractors. The existing pond on the property is still full of frogs that have been 'peeping' in the last couple of weeks. Silo structure remains for now amidst the rest of the collapsed structures and worth a look if you're inclined to view old properties that won't last much longer.

The building is LONG gone it was located where the overpass of 28 crosses over 50. The congregation might be somewhere else.

I need to look at my ancient ADC map of Northern VA to figure out what the name of the church was. The copy where there are large swaths of Fairfax that actually had open spaces...
