Great Pic of Hunters Lodge , full of rednecks over 30. As a young redneck man 21,22 I went in there. Mostly whisky drinking place. They gave me the evil eye for looking at their women. I was looking for a good ass beating, being in there. None of the women however where really young, most way over 25.Good country music droneing on in the background. Like "Pins and Needles in My Heart" Johhny Paycheck..

Well, much of the Mosaic District has been built along with much of Halstead Square and Mill Creek. But things are not done. According to plans, MGC will stay right where it is, but the NW corner is slated to become high-rise multi-use TOD with no in/out access from either Gallows or Lee Highway.

It looks like the picture was taken on from the corner where the target in the "Mosaic District" is located now, former location of the drive-in theatre. Looking across the intersection to where Merrifield Garden Center is now located. The Exxon is/was on the corner at Lee Highway heading west and Gallows heading north, I need to pay more attention the next time I drive through there to see if the gas station is still there.

Great pictures!

The gas station is long gone. It became alternate parking for MGC for a while, and then the whole thing was gobbled up as the expanded interchange came into being.

The 3nd flick was usually so bad that it was a good time to get down to the 29 Diner to get something to eat.

Kind of a long haul, since the Super 29 Drive-in was out on West Ox Road near where the Costco is now. The Lee Highway Drive-in was a lot closer to the 29 Diner, as it was just east of where the Merrifield Post Office is today.

Although it is located in Alexandria, this was known during the Civil War as the Fairfax Seminary. It served as McClellan's HQ early in the war.

This Spanish style house was located on Popes Head Road about 1/2 of a mile from Clifton Road. It was torn down and a McMansion was built further back on the lot.

Super 29 was a better drive-in, and living in Fairfax City made the choice of the 29 diner a no brainer.

We also were able to get beer there a 3am. Any other questions?

It was a much simpler time back in the late 70's.

I was here long before that, and I think you simply got confused between the two drive-ins. Also as to when in the course of an evening you should buy beer.

Well as was the situation many times - We drank all of the beer we had in our Styrofoam coolers, and we didn't hang out in Merrifield.

So running my 428 Mustang down RT 29 only took a few minutes. No confusion about that.

During the Civil War the area where the Episcopal Seminary is located was still part of Fairfax County.

Failing to plan = planning to fail. You don't buy your beer at 3:00 in the morning.

WRONG! That house was one of the houses in Midgetville. I was there when it was still inhabited and saw it when people still lived in it.

CLARK HOUSE - 6332 Barcroft Mews Drive, Falls Church

This Victorian farmhouse was commissioned by William Clark in 1902, and is the surviving architectural remnant of a large dairy farm operated by the Clark family for over 50 years.

Located right near the intersection of Braddock & Columbia Pike - the area that is now Parklawn development was originally part of the 300-acre farm that delivered dairy to DC. A member of the Clark family still lives a few doors away.

This is a 1997 aerial of Waples Mill at Route 50. The lot circled is where the mattress store and tae kwon do are located (an up-to-date street view follows). The third picture is a 1952 view of the lot with a 1997 slight overlay.

Around 1989-1996, I work in the office building on Random Hills and Waples Mill. At that time, a man who rode a yellow motorcycle lived on that lot in a tent. It was very overgrown and I don’t believe anyone could see him if they weren’t looking down. I wonder if he was a Swart (family who previously owned a lot of the land in that area.)

I did a little travel by bus in the late 70s and always found Continental Trailways to be a cut below Greyhound. The CT buses always seemed to smell funny. Not sure what year this Alexandria bound bus pic is from. Apparently CT was once owned by Holiday inn.

They are still in business after 80 years!

Leroy Place actually had been part of Guinea Road.

Guinea used to cross both Little River Turnpike and Prosperity and terminated at Woodburn Road.

Another bit of bygone Americana. Clotheslines were once ubiquitous. And washboards were originally NOT a musical instrument.

All of the times I’ve driven by there, I never really paid much attention to that building (although I remembered it with your post). I agree, it is a business and building stuck in time and good to hear about. Great picture to remind us. You can bet I will pay more attention to it the next time I drive by.

You know what building I do pay attention to is the white brick furniture store with green roof that was built over the creek like a bridge not burying the creek. I always liked that building. Is it still there?

I see a nice swing set there too! I remember my dad buying a swing set from Montgomery wards. He let it sit in the garage for a few weeks before he got around to going to hechingers to pick up concrete mix and a post hole digger to set it up. We were chomping at the bit to help him get it done. I guess those swing sets are too dangerous for kids nowadays.

I lived on Taylor Street when they cut through to extend 66. Later, when I lived on McKinley in Westover and got a look at the equipment they were using, I was astounded at how humongous they were. Incredible. Slightly monstrous.

Why is it divided into numerous sections and how long was that the case?

My 50's mom eventually traded her washboard for a Speed Queen automatic washer, but she never owned a dryer. A clothesline in the back yard and another in the basement for bad weather.

It had nothing to do with money, she could have afforded a truckload of dryers. She just didn't want one.

I remember that when we played football across the back yards of the houses in our neighborhood, that you needed to be mindful of the clothes lines.

It's a great place to pick up DIY stone and gravel. Nice people, quality products, and decent prices.

I think it is. I got some kitchen chairs there once. Might be a a comic book store now?

The picture of I 66 shows the east and westbound lanes on the outside, with the future metro track to go in the center lanes. There was an island between the metro and the vehicle lanes. It appears the picture is looking northwest from Patrick Henry Drive as the lanes head towards East Falls Church Metro Station. Note the electric lines on the left on the old right of way of the WO&D railroad bed which is now a bike trail.

It's still the case. The divisions are for two lanes of traffic, then a buffer, then Metro, then another buffer, then two more lanes of traffic.

Okay, got it now. The person that posted the picture mentioned he lived on Taylor Street, so I was thinking the picture was from that area, in which the metro is underground. Thanks.

When we played wiffle ball over the clotheslines was a HR. We also played a game we never gave a name to. One person was the thrower and everyone else was an outfielder. The thrower had to ricochet a ball (rubber / tennis) off the house and over the clothes lines for a HR. Our age, probably 7-8 combined with the distance to the clotheslines made it somewhat difficult to do.

When did kids stop playing "hot box"?

It's a shame. That was one of many cool and unique houses on Popes Head that were demolished to make room for others.

The land for I-66 inside the Beltway was cleared late 50s/early 60s but Arlington County fought it for a long time. Lots of roads in the area deadend where the road would have crossed the interstate.

A Frank Lloyd Wright house -- Pope Leigh -- that was in the path was moved to Woodlawn Plantation.

Much of the route was still the W&OD railroad in the 50s and 60s. The fights began in the early 1970s after the railroad had gone into bankruptcy. Arlingtonians surprisingly won their case in both the 4th District Court and the Supreme Court, events that leave them in the driver's seat to this day. In the end, a greatly scaled back below-grade plan was created by Transportation Secretary william Coleman to include the sound barriers and tons of landscaping that we see today.

The Pope-Leighey house was originally located in the in the eastbound lanes of I-66, just before Exit 68. Here are some materials about it from 2003 in its new location.

The line went into bankruptcy, but that was in the 1930s.

There were actually two different fights that ran together. The first one was over the abandonment of the W&OD as a functioning rail line which started when the Virginia Department of Highways and VEPCO tried to buy the line. That fight ended in 1968 with the abandonment of the railroad. The next fight was over the actual construction of a highway which started at the same time as the fight over abandoning the W&OD and which stretched on into the 1970s.

Various components of the line went into bankruptcy many times. In 1939, the W&OD simply abandoned the line west of Purcellville. The C&O then purchased what was left of the W&OD in 1956, but kept the existing name. In 1963, the C&O abandoned the line between Rosslyn and Thrifton, and what is now VDOT purchased it as potential right-of-way for I-66, a project that had been on its radar since 1956. Then in 1968, the railroad as a whole ceased operation and C&O sold the remains to VDOT. VDOT then sold most of the route to VEPCO which already had power lines in the right-of-way. The Arlington Coalition on Transportation began its battle in 1971 and in 1972 gained a surprising federal court victory in ACT v. Volpe. That decision was upheld by the Supreme Court, creating a stand-off not resolved until the Coleman compromise.

That’s right. Many, many roads cut off. That’s about the only effect it had on me as I walked everywhere. So it was a big one. But I never chained myself to a tree. I just walked down to the next road that crossed - Quincy.

Luciano's in Tyson's Mall closed a couple of weeks ago. It may have been the last of the originals stores; the sign in the window said "Thanks for letting us serve you for 42 years, please visit our other restaurant in Fair Oaks Mall."

Unfortunately, I didn't have my phone with me and didn't get a pic, a couple of days later, the storefront was boarded up. Maybe somebody else has a Luciano's pic they can post.

What will become of Luciano's? Probably be developed into a women's shoe store, like we need another one of those in the mall.

And here is a photo of it in its original location at 1005 Locust Street. Doesn't really do it justice, plus it has to be remembered that it was a 1940 concept home for a middle-income family. Impressive that so much thought went into energy conservation though...

In revolutionary times, Braddock rd was called mountain rd. Where it ends at rt 15, if you turn left you can see just a bit down the road where it still continues as Mountain rd

I, Nikki Hirnsby, grew up in fairfax county Rt#1 Burke Va. Home was between the Watts Farm and the Beasley farm. I walked for hours around many old mansions through the woods daily. The cross raids at Burke was nothing more than gas station one corner, grocery store another corner that was also a post office. And had a county fair every summer there with grease pig contest in the field for the kids. Mom took us & neighbor kids (Col Meade girls -Robin Meade who caught the piglet with my help one year. I won art contest water color painting 1st & 2nd ribbon. Was a small town event at Burke crossroads. Farmer Watt (daughter married the Pulley family that once owned the land the northern va community college was built in) lived at end of our lane. Old farmer watt talked to us kids about mosbey raiders & meeting him. He also got Indian arrowheads on the land where the Washington airport was built. Farmer Beasley had three cow ponds where we kids waited to freeze over to skate each winter. In summer my dog and I walked all the Beasley farmland running from his herd of black angus cows. I also bought my first guitar going to old mansions selling flower seeds 10cents a package. I went fishing with my dog at a man made lake off Wajefield Forest catching blue gill & bass. Then walking through snow to end of dirt road to catch school bus that took almost an hour picking up the grade school kids all around Rt#1 Burke VA which was a great childhood that these photos take me back to remember how long it took my Dad to go downtown Washington DC working for the US Government in a high position with the FAA. Mom worked as a teacher & was socially active in the eta of the Kennedy's plus sat on the education board for state of VA. Years of memories and pictures from our new home with the 6 white pillars and land my brothers and I grew up from grade school into college. I have a lot of photos on Facebook from those times or bing google my name as I have many Great Stories of that time in Burke Annandale & Fairfax plus Washington DC where I sang & played music too. Thank you for posting photos and hope I can share more from my late parents one day here too. God bless as "I was raised in north va where the dogwoods grow" as a Grammy voting member this is one of hundreds original songs.

I dont remember Columbia pizza but I remember the pizza place next to Burger chef/Arthur Treachers/Jerrys. Was that Andys Pizza? I worked at the American/Amoco car wash for a couple months in the late 70s and we would get pizza and subs from that place all the time.
