Wow! Hi Soloman!
This was the Fairfax City Holiday Inn my Dad and his brother built around 1965. It was on the corner of rt.123 and 50 in Fairfax. The theme of the Inn, bar and restaurant was British as we are English. It hosted the Redskins weekly in the special room created for them, The Snuggery, that I also got married in, in 1970. Dad and his brother managed and ran the Holiday Inn till around about 1990, when they sold it.

Janine, find the picture or quote you are speaking of and click on the Quote tab at the bottom of the post. Hopefully Soloman will see you were speaking of that particular post and will respond. I had to learn this the hard way!!!!!!!!!

Happy Birthday Dave!!! I hope you day is as fabulous as you are! Looking forward to seeing you and the Foo Fighters on the 4th of July in DC. Was fortunate enough to see Sound City Movie when you hosted it in DC and sat in front of you and your mom. Loved the movie and the opportunity to be selected to ask you a question afterwards. Have loved everything you have done artistically. Thank you so very much for the wonderful musical history lessons called Sonic Highway. LOVED IT!!!

Yes Rt 1 at Groveton with the water tower, looks like a Memco I think it was but they were closed by then. Service Merchandise was in there about 1990, and thats a Holly Frams in front. great fried chicken and potato wedges, I miss Holly Farms. That area was a airport years back and the Dixie Pigs not far away with Mr Bean I think his name was and "Blondie" the young waitress..

I believe on the lower left corner which looks like an Amoco sign is now Famous Dave's.

The building on the right side, free standing, is now a cat doctor, I think.

Smack dab in the middle, in front of "memco" or "bradlees" or whatever it was, is now one of the national chain pet stores.

Across Rt 1 was a motel until the mid 2000's...had a big front lawn, and a few trees in front that had white paint on them for the first 4-5 feet above the ground (could never figure out what that was for), and maybe 10 rooms in a single story building.

Anyone remember that motel? What was it named?

There is a bank there now...

That picture was taken looking SW at the intersection of Little River Turnpike, Ravensworth Road, and Annandale Road. In the background is Michlebach's furniture. The Burger Chef was the original restaurant built at the location in the background - terrible hamburgers. And here we see the Shriners marching, probably during an Annandale Days parade, which would have made a left jog at 3 Chefs (and their famous silver dollar pancakes) to head down Columbia Pike towards Annandale Elementary School, Tops Drive-In (precursor to KFC) the Acme at the other end of town and the Methodist Church. The Shriners also liked to sometimes drive their funny little cars in the parade too.

Those pictures were taken long after the property had been sold and abandoned by the former owners. It sat there for years, first as developers argued with the county over water and drainage issues, then as the Great Recession made home-building anywhere almost pointless. The woods were eventually clear-cut and a dozen or so brick-and-brass McMansions were put up. To my mind, it's pretty much just a tasteless wasteland at this point, but it seems the houses have sold.

Used to throw against their darts team -- The Royal Shafts -- in WADA leagues. They were very good. That would have been mid-90's, so the British influence didn't evaporate instantly.

Just by the way, the parking lot on the east side of the motel is at an odd angle because of the old trolley car right of way. The track ran behind the 29 Diner and what's now the Bombay Club or whatever, then crossed 123 and zoomed through there on the way up to Oakton. The cars stopped running in 1939, but the right-of-way remained as a physical and legal barrier to development for many years beyond WWII.

Flashcubes were great new disposable technology. Once one side was used, a new side popped into position as you wound the film forward. After the fourth flash, you just put the whole cube in the trash and popped in a new one. Off to the landfill with them. Previously, you had to remove a used individual flash bulb (which would be burning hot) and insert a new one before you could take another picture. That's progress for you!

There was also a DMV Office on the corner of the shopping center. People were herded through the rope lines. There were little black ash trays everywhere, and they were usually overflowing with cigarette butts. Those DMV employees all most likely died of lung cancer.

I just found this site and although this thread is years old, I have to reply. I stayed at the Westwood Motel back in 1968. Yes, it was next to the Anchorage Motel, although I remember another property (a smaller motel perhaps or just a storage building) between the two. It was where the Hardees/Meineke shop is now. There were just woods behind the motel, a few abandon cars, storage sheds, etc. Oh the memories :)

In Fairfax shopping center there was a DMV but it was Fairfax Drugs befoer that. My best pals mom worked there. Also in that shopping center was a Western Auto store where we used to get our BBs and 22LRs for plinking in the fields behind the shopping center. There also used to be little league fields directly behind the center where we played ball. There was also a farm back there with a barn we used to play in but it's all gone now.

That Fotomat is still there - I think it was a drive through coffee shop a few years ago. Anyways, it's across from the Sunoco and McKay Chevrolet

There was another Fotomat in the parking lot of the shopping center at the corner of 28/29 which was on the right side as one crossed 28 while going southbound. Not sure if it's still there.

Another Fotomat was in Burke Towne Plaza, and is now an ATM for Navy Federal Credit Union. It's right in the middle of the lot.

Another Fotomat was behind the 7/11 of the Jaxx Parking lot at Rolling and Old Keene Mill Rds. It's gone now. Was in between the 7/11 and Mobil Station. Mobil is now Sunoco.

The first two Concorde flights to Dulles arrived together on May 24, 1976, so that's a real possibility.

The French Concorde that arrived that day, F-BVFA, is now on display at Udvar-Hazy.

May not have been economically perfect, but the Concordes were certainly beautiful as they almost hovered their way around their approaches to Dulles. You always wanted to stop and watch.

The green car with the trailer hitch, is that an Oldsmobile?
In front of that it looks like a Ford Galaxy 500 then a blue fiat or datsun then a Plymouth duster or the Dodge equivalent then a red pinto with a vinyl roof. On the left it looks like a blue Monte Carlo and a MG convertible.

Shoot a 22 or BB gun in Fairfax City and the SWAT Team will be called into action. Try to buy 22LR ammo anyway - Good Luck

Not an MG. Rear lights ran vertically on those.

I'd guess ~75 Fiat 124.

Compare the light layout to this (but with a full length US rear bumper):

DSCN0410.JPG

If you zoom in closely you can see the white lights to the inside as well as the vertical plate lights to each side.

It was the same at Algonkian golf course. You could tell it was appoaching by the loud noise. Everyone would stop play and look in awe as the Concord flew over us.

A Concord/SST could never fly in this area again because all of the development in Loudoun County and western Fairfax. Just imagine all the protests from the NIMBYs.

The car in front of the Oldsmobile is a 1967 Dodge Polara - The tail lights give it away. This was the was the body style for the Polara in 1967 and 1968, but this Polara has no side panel marker lights. Those lights came out in 1968.

Nice. Pretty sure that's a Datsun 510 in front of the Polara.

Julius Hollowell was, indeed, a police officer for Fairfax County PD. The picture is of Johnnie Hollowell (my dad) and his brother, Gilbert. All are deceased.

The cars in front of the Peoples in the pic above are all "Heaps". Back then 100K on a car was a lot. Paints faded, chrome peeled off, Engines, transmissions did not last as long. Tires were regular ply not radial, good luck getting 25 k out of a set, batteries were not as good as today and road handling was not invented. Breaking down for one reason or another was common after 50k miles.

Come on out of Green Dolphin tanked up a bit, slide into the big wide bench seat with no seat belts and low ride off on spongy suspension . No safety features either back then. other then dual braking systems. One hand on the wheel the other on a cig. One for the road between the legs on the seat.

No crumple zones, no collapsible steering columns, no head rests, no automatic door locks, no side-impact protection. Just a lot of ways to die. But the biggest enemy of the car itself was rust. It just ate everything.

I am surprised ANYONE remembers that place. That was about the time that Bell Aire used auto parts was at the corner of JERMANTOWN ROAD and RT 29

Very True. Thats why we all wanted used "California or Arizona cars" After 5 or 6 years around here the salt would get to them here.

And how many of them had hard steel dash boards! No Padding at all.

More input was "put" "in" for the cigerette lighter location then many safety items.

I thought Ralph Nader was a smart fellow, then a weird guy and today I will have to say. "Thanks Ralph, you did help to make cars much much safer and save lives". His book, "Unsafe at Any Speed' the Corvair. A cool car, sports car like, low to the ground that often smelled like burning oil and did not run too good, But hey I took my drivers license test in one in 1970 and passed with the old flying colors.

Here is a video of the demolition of the building.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZo41XD_xeU#t=55

I think there might be a picture or two somewhere in this thread. Wasn't there a drive in theater at or near this location at one time? Is that what you are looking for, the old drive in?

Pictures from both the drive-in (1954-84) and multiplex (1984-2009) are found on this site...

I like the aerial photo of the drive-in. All the Mosaic District today.

To be more specific: The sports car parked in the grass on the left in the Dulles photo is an Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce. It is a Series 2 with the blunted Kamm rear.

My father used to sneak me and my little sister in there by having us hide under a blanket on the backseat floor, since they charged by the person, not carload. Drive-Ins are magical places when you're a kid. I think it even had a playground under the screen. Then you would roam around in the dark past the projection booth to the snack bar. They would show marathons of movies sometimes, like every Planet of the Apes movie. But normally you would get at least 3 movies for less than you pay for one today. They got scarier and had more nudity as the night went on. Cool for 12-year-old boys like me :-D

That's when the people of color could watch the movies in the balcony at the State.

Star wars was released in theaters in 1977 and was released on dvd in 2004. Rather than wait on that line I would have waited the 26 years to see it on dvd.

The original Star Wars was released in May 1977. Not May 1957.

I worked at the Landmark Hecht's from November of 1973 to early 1975 selling art supplies in a department at the base of the escalator. I remember taking the WSP's as well as Hecht's own credit cards. Hecht's delivered for free, and I remember some woman who came in and bought a dozen mens shirts, all the same size, and had them delivered so he could pick the one color he wanted. Then she returned the rest LOL. Things like that killed off customer service.

Wow, I can't even remember where I saw the first Star Wars movie, but if it was at the State, there's a good chance that's where I saw it. We used to love to sit in the first row of the balcony and toss popcorn and candy down on the people in the lower level.
