There were also several motels in town that went away in the 80-90’s. Don’t recall their names but they all had complimentary ice machines.

I moved away in 1998 but came back in 2003. During that time you had to start putting the ‘703’ prefix or whatever when you dialed a number. Did the phone companies advertise that a lot? I almost don’t care but I feel that if someone doesn’t respond it will be lost to history.

I lived in Falls Church back then and IIRC the ten-digit dialing started in 1998.

Was it advertised a lot? Not really locally. It was already known nationally that the phone system was switching over to 10 numbers instead of 7. So we all already knew about it from stories about other cities and people we knew from other places.

I don’t recall the exact date because it didn’t seem like a big deal at the time. I think the first thing I did was reset my dial-up Erols connection on a old packard bell pentium pc.

Oh wow, the internet on training wheels. Didn't spend time on dial up much past the mid 90's, thanks to Jones Intercable, but I remember it well. Here's a walk down memory lane for those who clearly recall that era. Modem wails on Youtube...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qtqz0bdq30Q

If things regress any further, we'll end up discussing the phone numbers of our youth -- the ones that are forever etched in memory. Mine started SOuth 5-42xx.

No, I was not.

I know where that is. I went there back in 1986 after sustaining a bad reaction to an insect bite. They had a doc-in-the-box operation at the time. I was given a prescription for some Benadryl. IIRC, I had to go to a Peoples Drug Store over in Arlington, as that was the closest one open at night. It's been a while, but I think I went to the one at the intersection of Lee Highway and Spout Run Parkway. I don't think Benadryl was available over the counter yet.

I'm not sure Circle Terrace Hospital was set up to handle deliveries. I suspect the Alexandria Hospital would have handled the majority of those in Alexandria. In 1963, the Alexandria Hospital was still on Duke Street, wasn't it? I don't think the new one on Seminary Road had opened yet.

Minutes before the tornado hit pickett i was in the drug store next to firestone tires in the checkout line looking out towards woodson, said to my girlfriend, it looks like the end of the world let's get out of here now,I blasted down olley lane towards braddock road, got home a few minutes afterword, could hear sirens everywhere, my dad had gone around our house and opened up window's on each end of the house he said he'd thought a tornado was on the way and his instinct kicked in to do what he did, I told my dad I had just come from picklett and it looked like the end of the world, later we heard there was a tornado that had hopped through from manassas towards baileys crossroads.

That’s a crazy story! Today, you’d never get out of the parking lot in time. Your Dad must have been from the mid-west to have known that.

Yep, and she should. I recall she provided curb service for prospective customers, and was considered a fringe benefit for the used car sales staff. She was a bit pudgy in the tummy, and missing a couple teeth, and chain smoked, but she was good with her hands and super friendly. She liked High school kids, and gave them discounts if they gave her pot and a six pack of PBR and a pack or two of Virginia Slims 100s. She'd go around the world for a carton.
KittyCar KumQueen, they called her, she the epitome of gratuitous lip service.

That's the Hermitage. It's out by the NOVA Alexandria campus, at 5001 Fairbanks Avenue.

This is a stupid story, but let me get it on record. The weather number posted above is correct, but you could dial 936 then any four number and it would still get you the weather.

My older sister got a pager in the early ‘90s, it was like having a cell phone today where you could be anywhere and someone would get in touch with you. She was suburban white, but listened to rap and thought she was a drug dealer because she wore those terrible baggy jeans (and didn’t have any drugs to sell).

My brother and I would page her with the 936 prefix, then listen in on the kitchen phone when she and her friends would call the number back. She fell for it every time, and still got into UVA.

Woodbine is on King Street. It backs up to Ivy Hill Cemetery. The building where Circle Terrace used to be is on Virginia Avenue.

The old Harper house and Barn was on Cameron. Never heard about George Mason having anything to do with the house. Although, George Washington did stay there when he came up from Mount Vernon to attend the FAlls Church. The house was bought by an ex wife of Roger Moore. Yes , 007. She was a nice lady who entertained. She had the party on New Year's Eve 1975 not hippies. A lot of history in that house and barn. Mr Harper loved elephants. He decorated with elephant decor. He had an elephant door knocker that made an elephant sound. But it was not working for years. He died and Mrs Harper, a nice lady lived there a few years . Then sold it. The fire was Dec 31st, 1975. Bicentennial year. Lots of memories on Facebook page, " You know you are from Falls Church if you remember this..."

There were a few Grand Union Supermarkets in the area. Fairfax City had a location very near Shakey's that closed about 1975

They had glass counters with lots of blue steel and nickel Smith & Wessons that mademy hands itch to get in my grips. Then in 1973 Fairfax co passed a 3 day wait to buy a handgun and Hermans began a death slide that ended with them going out of business like Sports Authority did after they caved and got rid of the guns after yuppies screamed about them , when the guns were gone then the yuppies bought at any store that sold for a dime less, just like they today they save 10 dollars a week getting their toilet cleaned and grass mowed by illegals instead of using American labor and paying them a living wage.

Soon Richmond will allow Fairfax to put gun dealers out of business again with another wait probably 30 days so get your guns while the gettings good. Clark bros on Rt 29 will be back to their 70's 80 's and 90's heydays with no waits

Get your guns and try um out right there on their range ! We know you'll still be saving that 10

You Know Who

There was also a Grand Union in the "Bradlick" shopping center at the intx of Braddock and Backlick roads. It was an A&P before that, as I recall.

What Im trying to say is where Chuck E Cheese is today was Grand Union , After Grand Union then it was the Welfare Wagon place to get food stamps and welfare checks

DAJAX being nice now , not a word who was giving out the stamps and checks same as today but way larger amounts

A few more still around: Morton's, Fair Oaks Mall, WETA 26, Giant Food, Marlos, Roy Rogers. And yes, Gulf is still around. Maybe I missed a few more?

That had to of been the first day that parking lot was open to vehicles. I say that because not one curb has black tire marks on it.

The tire marks are visible, but there aren't many, and they aren't robust. Here is the reason why.

Rubber compounds in the sidewall construction of tires 60+ years ago, were more rigid. At the time, major tire companies were getting away from tube tires with the use of cord sidewall tires.

As a result, tire were less likely to leave black scuff on curbs.

Tires of today are steel belted radial tires, and because the steel makes the sidewall much stronger, and the rubber compounds are much softer for a better grip on the road.

Steel belted radial tires are much better in snow, and made snow tires not need in many ares of this country.

"Nonsense"? That's like malarkey if you are Joe Biden. Or rubbish if you are a Brit. Maybe akin to balderdash. But you need to stop with the gibberish, because there are indeed tire marks in that photo.

I remember going to store after store with my mom looking for basketball shoes that didn't have black soles. No scuff marks on the gym floor or you were on your hands and knees cleaning them all up.

Gulf once owned half of Reston or 3600 acres of land. The land was developed as "Gulf Reston" until 1978, when Gulf sold it's real estate holdings in Virginia and Florida.

Yes, nonsense.

Well it is obvious to others that there are indeed tire marks on several of the curbs visible in the photo, and one poster gave an example of why there may not be as many as you'd expect. But instead of admitting that your initial post was wrong, you would rather deflect and pick stupid fights. You are the one acting like a 9 year old.

In the interest of getting off the curb topic, and, in the interest of sounding like a grammar nerd, when you say "Gulf sold it's real estate", just know that it is "Gulf sold its real estate"...its, not it's.

It gets tricky with it, it is, and its "possessive", but, it's would be a contraction for "it is" and not a possessive of "it".

So, "its" means belonging to, "it's" is a contraction of "it is"

Curb people...no need to get angry. Unless, of course, you are an angry person, then, there's nothing that can be done. Go ahead and be angry, but maybe do it elsewhere.

Yeah, maybe.

Clearly not "on topic", which is old pictures of FFX County, which is an awesome thread.

On the other hand, it being so slow, and, some people getting all angry about curbs, I figured, why not?

Early on in my career, I was corrected as to my "it's" and "its" usage...you see, I had gone to a fancy college, and, I had a pretty good job, but my "boss" said to me, it will really help you if you have these basics right, and, it will really hurt you if you don't.

It's kinda like the whole reason we wear a coat and tie...doesn't make us any smarter, just makes us look smarter, which is more than half the battle.

Agreed...probably not the correct forum for grammar corrections...but, maybe somebody appreciates this free advice as much as I did when I received it some 30 years ago.

Carry on.

I mean for Christ Sake Trump only posts here as DAJAX right

Now yall now simmer down

As a peace offering to change the subject matter … Off me LOL

And as an humane gesture ...a link to Fairfax County Schools History page so you too can steal some pics to post here I remember FCPD superintendents back to Dr Watts who passed after heart attack in 1971 succeeded by the late great S.John Davis who was the principal of West Springfield HS and later after a long time served as Fairfax Counties Supt became the Virginia State School Chief . Thru the years I have read of them all but Scott Brabrand is an unknown to me. To tell you the truth I could not tipster any out for the last 20 years if I saw them hiding behind a Giant Food store reading the paper with a 7-11 cup of coffee and sleeping in their county plated unmarked car or parking in fire lanes like Va Sen Dick Slawslaw (D) like Ive read bout on FXU

Really all of these people who have served as FCPS Schools Supt all had the best interests of students from K to 12 in the hearts, in past days they were educators always , others today were educators who were forced to become politicians after school boards became elected a terrible decision that has made a mess of school budgets .

That "colored" school is on "School Street" of course. Yes Virginia claimed separate but equal schools during segregation and WT Woodson made sure they were indeed equal facilities with the same construction standards and good teachers for all Woodson was a man who was involved directly with all school affairs every day not a big shot just sitting in an office in Fairfax .He regularly visited all schools making sure they were up to his stringent standards white or black no difference with regard to education , books and materials ,hygiene and maintenance . The only major difference were the black schools were smaller as the population was of blacks . Many blacks went to high school in Manassas from the western end of Fairfax Co where it was mostly open farm or wooded land. He was an educator not a politician who had to work with the means available to him in his day. It is indeed easy to sit back in comfort and judge those of the past . In any event segregation ended in 1966 in Fairfax county . WT Woodson retired in 1962 . His house was on Rt 123 Ox Road at the intersection right before the now closed Rite Aid there on that side of 123 in Fairfax City before Rt 50 .

NUFF Said Now! Finally !

This pic has been posted before. Is this the ESSO station that was across the street from Vincent's Diner?
