I was in that shopping center and across the street on an almost daily basis from '72 to '78, I recognize some of those vehicles. Lived in Bryn Mawr area. My first beers other than the Michelob Dark and Miller High Life ponies my father kept in the basement fridge were from the Dart Drug across Chain Bridge Road. They actually sold it to us. Drinking age for beer was 18 back then, which we were a couple years shy of for the most part. Wine too, I think, was 18yrs.

We would get two or three six packs of schlitz malt liquor from Dart Drug and build a fire on the banks of Pimmet Run, not far from the Old Dominion Drive bridge. Or go up to Matildaville. Good times, great memories.

I learned to drive in McLean, in a Karmann Ghia.

Ginos was more or less in that same shopping center with Giant and Peoples, but around the corner, not too far from it anyway. Highs was just down the street by the fire station across from Jack in the Box.

70s through maybe the early 80s? Don't remember exactly when they pulled out. One in Annandale and one near Skyline were the ones we went to mostly. Think the historic Taco Bell in Merrifield originally was a Jack in the Box but don't remember ever going to that one as a JITB.

I do remember buying 6-packs of Ballantine bottles (under age) at Dart Drug and Peoples Drug for $0.88!

Annandale Merrifield Reston Herndon McLean. The greasy mystery meat fried tacos with a cheese half slice and wilted lettuce were cult like and a big reason that pot smokes and just plain late night workers enjoyed the greasy fare , the smokes to cure the munchies the workers to get by till payday or a midnight snack just keep in mind The VSP would not allow eating in the car! Unless there was a 24/7 coal mine strike down SW Virginia pushing 140 on I 81 to get down there on open highway stretches with the both big barrels on the 440's wide open in the days of a single rooftop red cherry and a six shot .38 S&W special M10 with 158 gr round nose lead slugs in it on the hip of the Sam Brown belted holster , all you had on your strong side way back up in those hills but it was enough as the people of SW Va are god loving decent hard working people who you could count on as citizen back up, plus old snub Sneaky Pete hiding in your pocket sometimes with a friend called .25 Colt auto hidden away as a last ditch chance if you could not make it to the trunk of your car for some heavy duty deer hunters firepower not the military stuff of today

A few ago and some Burger Kings brought Jack back in secret but we cult fans soon learned they were JIB tacos and BK soon stopped as no one wanted their burgers which were 3 dollars when the tacos were only a dollar !

The McLean Jack in the Box closed in late 1977 I believe. A Roy Rogers opened about the same time, it was located where McDonald's is now. Roy Rogers got a lot of business when they opened. If I recall correctly, the JIB was located pretty much where Santini's is now.

Along Laughlin Avenue were older homes with older residents, mostly retired, predominantly cap cods and single story cottages with front porches and basements, Laughlin Avenue ended at Bryn Mawr park which was heavily wooded. Laughlin turned into gravel with an 'almost cul-de-sac' where Hazen Place is located, with a very narrow dirt footpath through the woods down to Tennyson .

Hazen place was a barely noticeable dirt footpath that led up the hill to a small meadow in the woods, another hangout for the brats and such who lived in the area. That path continued down to what is now an extension of Emerson. That part of Emerson was heavily wooded with a steep slope down to what is now the back of Balducci's and what was then McLean Theater. The theater exit in back was almost always unlocked.

Emerson was extended and development of Hazen began started around late 77 and early 78.

About half the residents in Bryn Mawr, McLean Heights and McLean Manor were senior military officer families (O6 and above pay grade), most others were mid to upper management for various government agencies, senior foreign embassy staff and assistant ambassadors and undersecretaries, Georgetown faculty, news media correspondents and journalists, congressional representatives and senators, and some cia of course. A couple novelists and writers lived in the area too.

The power lines along Pimmet Run did not exist. They started clearing the woods for those lines along the creek between Old Chesterbook and Old Dominion Drive in early to mid 78.

We buried a time capsule in the woods there, a few hundred feet from OD drive @ Pimmet Run, in late spring early summer 1976, near our dam and rocky shoal on the creek. There's a few albums (including dark side of the moon and physical grafitti), about a quarter oz of columbian gold pot, a small amount of thai stick and a half a gram or so blonde hash, a tokemaster bong (heavily used), Washington Post and Washington Star issues from the day we closed it, clippings from Nixon resignation about a year and half earlier, some bicentennial memorabilia, a dungeons and dragons boxed book set and dice along with a chainmail booklet, some miniature figurines we used when we played D&D and Chainmail, copies of playboy and penthouse from dart drug, national geographic, smithsonian, washingtonian, newsweek and time magazines (parents subscriptions), copies of shogun, hobbit and lord of the rings and watership down, various other bric-a-brac, HS yearbooks from McLean and Langley, Longfellow and Cooper middle schools, class photos from Lewinsville, Kent Gardens and Franklin Sherman. Smaller stuff is in military ammunition boxes and a strong box, all of it and larger loose items in a one of those non-wooden green footlocker style storage trunks buried about 2.5 to 3 feet, wrapped in a plastic tarp. Took a week to dig the hole, about two months or so to collect everything. We had a tree fort there as well. The site is undisturbed, and was heavily overgrown when I last visited it in 2011 while in NoVa working for a bit. I believe it survived the power line installation. It was far enough away from where they ran line and cleared with heavy equipment.

When was the agreed time to open the capsule?

Like to see what survived the burial.

I remember when the Laughlin Realtors building was an old wooden house, right there at OD Drive and Dolley Madison...it was a sports store for a while, then in the mid 80's was either torn down or moved for the current brick bank building there now.

Also, accross from the McDonalds was the old McLean Library in one of those tiny little brick buildings, the little office that is now next to where mcdonalds WAS is now was once a house, and next to the library was a store that I wasn't allowed to go into (was too young) that was called LAGNAF, which supposedly stood for "lets all get naked and f***".

Remember the old Jack in the Box, made it until the early 80's i think.

The road BEHIND mcdonalds was where a bunch of old little houses, bungalow types, that were businesses, like some antique stores my mom used to drag me to.

That street is now these business buildings, built in the early 80's.

Yep, Roy Rogers was in the building that is now the mcdonalds near charley's place or whatever it is now.

Also, the intersection of 123 and Georgetwon Pike near CIA, was actually an OVERPASS, where if you were coming down GP towards 123, there was a big ramp that took you OVER 123 and merged you into 123. you cam still see the remnnants in the woods as you are heading down 123, on the right, as you are going towards the parkway.

Wonder why they took it down? Seemed to work pretty good.

Emerson had the same style of homes as Laughlin, as I recall, for the most part. I think they were older than most of the other homes in that area. About as old as the bungalows on Ingleside and Elm, 'south' of Dolly Madison. All that stuff is gone now.

Laughlin Realty was a landmark, for sure.

LAGNAF was too. I remember the Sunshine Company and Rainbow factory occupying the same space. Or maybe it was Rainbow Company and Sunshine Factory. Always a head shop. Made several purchases there. The gal in that place was the coolest person.

I'm probably not remembering JIB closure correctly. I do remember being disappointed that it was closed for what seemed a long time maybe for remodel in 77 or early 78, no tacos, no jumbo jack. It may have been when I was back in the area working in the early 80s that it actually closed.

We moved from the area in latter part of '78. Father retired. I ended up back in NoVa, DC and Belvoir working in the early 80s, always interspersed with some bits of activity for a few months here and there and elsewhere. I visited McLean a lot when stateside, still had a couple friends in the area at that time. Evans Farm Inn was always a favorite destination.

We never set a time to open the capsule. We basically decided not to do that. We figured someone else would eventually find it, and decided to leave it until then. All of us were transient families, none of us actually from the area. We loved living there. It was always sad parting when someone left, on everyones account. Most figured that when we left, we probably would never be back. That's typically the case for kids from military and geopolitical families.

A lot of development started in that area in 77. Everything changed. My family moved in 78, older sisters in college, third year of HS for me. McLean was a great place to live and grow up in the 70s.

I was a long haired non weed smoke standing in Frisco at the corner of Height and Ashbury in the summer of love. I came up on a bus from San Jose visiting my aunt , a long time old family friend I knew since age 2 when we visited lived across the back yard from her. He swiped a big cherry off my 3 yr old BD cake ! Making me a gun rights supporter at a very early age ! He was 7 at the time and was always a bit odd but bright and friendly and we talked about many things above our pay grade as I too am a 999. I last saw him that summer of 69 when we rode a bus up to Frisco for a look at the other odd people who were very freaky more so then me who was uncool as I did not join in on the toke LOL!

I learned a few years ago that he obtained a PHD in a science and was an activist for gay rights in the San Francisco area and it saddened me he had passed

Some Woodstock lore . Promoters of rock concerts who were small players wanted to put on a concert and looked around the farm areas east of NYC. They found Max Yasgur a dairy farmer after many hell no's. Max a Jewish Republican who owned the largest dairy farm in Sullivan Co NY allowed them to put the concert on to help what he saw was a generation gap with young people . They did not expect more then about 10 thousand music fans but word spread and spread and when the event began people started coming and did not stop leaving their cars and walking 5 and more miles in with more then an estimated 400000 thousand at the concert living on love for 4 days straight

Max died at the early age of 53 in 1973 in Florida the concert ruined his farm and his neighbors hated him , but he never regretted having the concert there

First glance I agree, but those year cars all kinda shared the boat-tail/split window.

And that's Bouton Hall across Church Street to the left of the church, in the center-left of the photo.Still around and apparently dating from the 1890s, although there'd been talk of putting a parking garage in its place and there was fire in the building last year.

I saw "Bananas" a Woody Allen vehicle (before he confirmed that he is a creep)at the Reed in the early 70s. It was not too far from the King Street metro and has been gone forever.

These were very small theatres like the Old Town further down King Street.

Really preferred the Bradlick and Annandale theatres.

But that picture is taken closer to Potomac Yard, judging from the distance of the Temple. If it had been at S Quaker Lane, the Temple would have been in the other direction, plus the number of tracks are too wide for that area.

Looks to be taken the Old Town area. There was a huge ice house in that area that got it's start cutting huge blocks of ice from the Potomac River.

As time went on it was possible to make clean fresh ice year round . See the blocks of ice sitting on the cars?

the Fruit Growers Express icing facility was located "north" of Alexandria Union Station, and more convenient to trains being made up at Potomac Yard. The FGEX Quaker Lane facility was a car shop.

On Rt 1 south and Jeff Todd Way and Belle View Shopping Center both owned by the Todd family, keeping with the Roy's tradition ! Excellent roast beef sandwiches burgers and Roys fried chicken

Now lets forget the smoked up bong hitter who threw the pie heard around the world, at least down to Va Beach when he threw it at Roy performing with his Sons of the Pioneers band at Picket Shopping center in the late 70's causing millions to shake their heads nationwide and ask Why ? At least it was a just a pie ! He was not that far gone to start shooting people .

Roy said peace to him too ! I personally thought he was pissed that Jack In The Box had closed , no greasy tacos and it was too far to go to Arthur Treachers's and Roys had no Fanta for his Tokemaster

Lee high school Springfield Virginia 1973. Back when the drinking age was 18. It sure looks like Lee in the background but I am confused about the letter jackets with a "B" on them. Maybe those were kids from another school attending a sporting event at Lee.

The edge of my memory is Route 7 and Columbia Pike being an intersection, instead of the overpass it is now. It was quite the clusterF before the state finally installed the overpass.

It looks like the apartment on Moray Place is being built in that picture.

So I see they refer to it as a "barrel of chicken". I grew up knowing it as a "bucket of chicken". Was that a regional thing or did different restaurants call their containers different names?

As I recall the barrel o chicken was 21 pieces and the bucket o chicken was 16 pieces while the box o chicken was 8 pieces. I worked at 3 chefs for a couple of weeks before my dream job at Lums opened up, lol.

Gino's/KFC used the same Bucket-Barrel verbiage also.

I worked at Pizza Kaezano's across the parking lot from the Roy Rogers when this happened. The kid who threw the pie or whatever it was (I thought it was a cup full of ice) was a stoner friend of mine nicknamed Shadow. Believe he died of leukemia a few years later.
