This amazing video from 1967 was a accident in The Plains Virginia where a vehicle struck a freight train and caused a huge fire that could have destroyed the town. Firefighters from Prince William and Fairfax ran a hose a amazing 0.9 miles from a creek to the fire scene. Firefighters came from as far away as Dunn Loring, Culpeper and Strasburg. Dulles airport sent a couple foam trucks that made a huge difference.

Who was killed by Arthur Goode at Tysons Corner. FXCO liberals let Goode off the hook with a life sentence but he killed another young boy just off a school bus in Florida in 1976 and they burned him in the electric chair in 1984. I was a Va State Trooper who was a backup to the FCSD Sheriffs deputies on the way to the Va/NC border as they transported him down to Fla.

Was this after it closed in 2012? The fact the place looks pretty desolate, there's a dumpster in the parking lot and this would be one of the most important times to photograph that mall make it true.

Not sure night brakes were such a commonly sold item at that time that they would have a sign on the side of the road advertising them. Not too many people owned the types of weapons that would benefit from a barrel brake. I think the sign says something like "NIGHT BRAKE DROP-OFF" (drop off hidden by car) and indicates it is an auto repair facility that allows you to drop your car off the night before. Probably a unique thing at that time, hence the sign. Just a guess.

I would believe if Cary would get rid of all the shit that the assholes have posted on the Mike O'Meara threads trying to shut them down that would free up a boatload of space. Why those pricks can't just ignore the thread and let those of us who listen have a place to post is beyond me. Fucking act like little children.

As an http search query through google, try this snippet, I believe this was previously posted by one of the esteemed regular contributors (causeican maybe)

https://www.google.com/search?q=site:fairfaxunderground.com+"Old+pictures+of+Fairfax+county,+love+em!"&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X

In addition, HTTrack is one of several useful tools for copying, lifting and archiving web content, https://www.httrack.com

Thanks for the memories from the old timers and permanent residents of Fairfax County. I never post here, but I do have a few images that I suppose I could contribute at some time. I lived in NoVA area several times in my life, early to late the 70s (McLean, as a kid 10 to 16, when times were cherry and things were cool), early to mid 80s(Belvoir and DC) and late 2000s to early 2010s (McLean, Great Falls). Just passing through, move along now, nothing here to see.

Why are the windows in the homes in the background so close to the roof line? Don't think I have ever seen that kind of architectural feature. Is there no attic and the ceilings are above the roof line or are the windows so high you cannot easily look out of them?

The windows seem high but they can be seen out of easily. Tthere is a full basement below the first floor of the house. I think that the attic is probably not one that you can walk around in other than the middle.

I have a rambler also but the full basement that is in the ground more than these houses and my windows are much larger. I have a huge picture window in the living room. And my attic is one that you can walk around in most of it without bending over.

But it also might be the perspective in the picture.

This was the style of the time, and it was very popular. By the standards of a half-century later, the windows, closets, kitchens, and bedrooms are all much too small, and while a great many have been upgraded over the years, most examples will be replaced by larger in-fill homes as time goes by. It is very difficult to sell these homes today as anything other than tear-downs.

Back in 1955 a home with 2 bathrooms was a big deal, and when Dad bought a couple window units we were in the lap of luxury

The Korean folks seem to be pretty happy living in these old Ravensworth homes. They always seem to cut down all the mature trees on the lot shortly after they buy them.

Fran, That's a 1960 Rambler Station Wagon...a Cross Country, I believe. The angle makes it look a little longer than it is.

Fran, Piece of cake...my 1968 Chevrolet wagon was 18 feet long vs the "small' 15.75 of the Rambler. :)

Ya, that Easter picture. I can just hear it now "Come over here so we can get a picture. Go out in the grass there. Hold your sisters hand and don't let her fall or she'll get her outfit dirty. Be careful of your shoes".

There was a HoJO's on North Washington Street in Alexandria, now a Wendy's. I was at the restaurant when some fool decided to rob the place. He didn't do his homework, right as he announced the robbery the motorcade with President Reagan was going by. Must have been twenty cops swarming the guy.

I lifted these photos of the old Ho Jo on RT 1 in Alexandria very near the Wilson Bridge.

I'm sure this has been posted before.

Trying very hard to get the orientation of that HoJo...

I'm thinking that because of the orientation of the track, that HoJo is located where that Pawn Shop/Kabob Restaurant is now, and, to the right center of the picture, that is Kirkwod coming down from Ballston/Va Square.

And so, this vantage point is just to the left of the railroad bridge (current 66) that goes over Lee Highway, which goes under and continues to Cherrydale to the right side of the picture.

For some reason I guess Lee Highway is obscured?

But, where are all those houses to the right of HoJO? the ones that come out perpendicular to Kirkwood?

And to the left of HoJo would be Lyon Village apartments...

Both of which look to have been built pre-1950.

I'm judging by the bike, etc, that this is at least late 1950's...

Little help?

Another family photo from Pimmit hills. Looks like a Maverick on the right so I guess it must be from the 70s. I think 70 was the first year for the Ford Maverick.

Speaking of Howard Johnsons here is a crime scene photo of the Watergate investigation. It shows the HoJo's across the street where the Watergate burglars stayed in room 723. This might have been posted earlier.

It became a Marriott, then was sold to GW University for student housing. They only kept it a few years and now it is (or shortly going to be) luxury rental apartments.

This is a fantastic photo. Anyone notice the old AB&W bus stop sign?

McDonald's hit the 5 Billion served in 1969

1969 - 1970 ?

Vienna? That is an awfully tall building with the water tower on the roof in the right side of the photograph to be in Vienna. Given the timeframe of the photo Vienna would have still be a rather rural little town.

According to my research, they hit "5 billion sold" in 1968.

Couldn't find a subsequent milestone.

AB&W served Washington and nearby Virginia until the WMATA takeover (1968).

That is definitely not the Vienna Peoples. Our Peoples was in the middle of a shopping center and is today a CVS.

That looks like the shopping center in Annandale where Fantastic Fritzbe's Flying Food Factory was and Silverado is now located.

+1 Thought the same ...but I used to go to Sport & Hobby & High's Ice Cream around time of that pic & as mentioned in another post , I don't recall that place either...Bradshaw Shoes at that time used to be where what later became Fritzbees...Deavers Appliance was on the other side of the 90 deg in corner of shopping center during early '60's...Top's Drive In that later became Gino's was on other side of Deavers ...Address in pic shows it being across from cannon / 3 Chefs on (old) Safeway side of Columbia Pike according to Google Maps...???

I think I see a 1974 AMC Matador, a 1970 Chrysler 300, a mid 1960's Ford Pick up truck.

That car on the right of the photo looks like it could be a Plymouth Barracuda, and on the far end it looks like a Black Trans Am

Sun City was a lot of fun and despite being on the border has a high rating as a low-crime area (at least on our side of things). Sorry to be so late in replying - I'm having a difficult time adjusting to EDT.

Fun vibe near UTEP with lots of fun breweries and clubs. The Scenic Drive is beautiful at night. But it was very hot most days but had a lot of rain the day we left.
