Thanks for the Brookville pic. Used to drive by it during. work several times a week back in the day hoping to catch a glimpse of those young boomer honeys in their bikinis. Obviously no blacks and no tattoed fat chicks allowed in. Thanks for the memories.

I'm sure there were plenty of fat white guys covered in tattoos who were allowed in.

We lived down the road from Landmark when it was still open-air. I got hit by a car at a crosswalk walking home from school near the Hamlets, lol.

I used to go into that Sears and use their equipment to record a 60s flashback radio show on, I think, DC101 in the mid-80s.

The only reason to go to the refurbished Landmark Mall of the 90s was Brentano's Book Store, imo.

Here is a rare photo of the Arthur Treacher's in the Rose Hill Shopping Center. I don't know the year it closed, but I do know that by 1983 it was boarded up.

I know I'm necro'ing the hell out of this thread, but I used to live right across from that comic book shop in Arlandria in the mid-80s. I spent many an afternoon there, heard the proprietor died. Sad. He let me loiter for hours despite me rarely buying anything (poor middle school student with no cake at the time.) RIP

Got two of those trade dollars with the chop marks on them. Willing to dig them out, snap pics and post them if you're still out there.

Was in Alexandria where Enterprise Rent A Car is today, it was very much like the Weenie Beanie Off 395 in Shirlington and like Benjamin's that was on Alban drive in lower Springfield that closed at least 10 years ago all had large yellow bill board menu's with just about the same items and names such as Royal Hamburger , Half Smoke on them over the order pickup counters , Weenie Beanie still does have the sign menu and is still open , Burger Delight closed about 5 years ago . All offered items like home made bean soup ,lunch specials ,egg sandwiches , fast take out foods that were a different selection then the same old from the big fast food outlets with exception of Arthur Treacher's , Tippy's And Jack In The Box as they are still the worlds best dining for the very sophisticated gourmand diner with ice cold Fanta to cool now legal bongs in Virginia at A.T's while JIB out west and Tippys in Nova offer sodas that do the dirty job

Tell us in the know if they were all owned by the same person, W.B Benjamin's and B.D

I worked at Brookville Pool in 1975 and never knew it was white-only. This does not surprise me in the least, since the owner and his wife (last name Malcom) were both nasty, money-hungry assholes

The underground filter room was equipped with an underwater window to judge water clarity. The window was located in the deep end, directly under the diving boards - perfect for watching the bikini-bottoms of young teeny-boppers get pulled down by the dive! Ah, my misspent youth!

They had a HUGE German Shepherd that slept behind the front desk and would come out to 'greet' visitors. On one occasion, he jammed his huge snout towards my crouch and my life passed before my eyes(LOL). The immaculately tailored man behind the desk told me not to be afraid because I was white and they only keep the dog around for niggers.

Blacks mostly voted for Republicans back then before Democrats brought welfare out for votes , 1960's War on Poverty ?? How can that ever be won when Dems keep our borders wide open and swarms of millions of poor illegal's swarm into the USA . It will never be won ! That was the plan it was all a huge suck in for a vote! Blacks are still impoverished in Democrat controlled areas and will be until real change comes by not voting for any more Democrats who suppress the economy with bad policies and threaten our US rights under the constitution

Trillion dollar "Infrastructure" bill ! that's a code word for (D) progressive pork that goes nowhere to stop black crime caused by DRUGS and poverty why Dems got rid of the death penalty in Virginia for those who only committed the very worst of all heinous crimes, now its ice cream sunday's for them and drugs that make it into prisons in general population for life where they are free to kill and kill again

Rember the 68 riots well. We were involved in the construction of a high rise apartment in Crystal City. From the roof you could see helicopters circling and smoke rising from the vicinity of the Capitol.

We called it a day early knowing traffic would be horrendous. Piling into the company van, we headed north up rt 1 to catch the ramp to southbound 95. Halfway up the ramp we were stopped by a phlanax of heavily armed Virginia State Police. They were engaged in backing up a flatbed loaded with concrete barriers.

Asking the nearest office, a grizzled white haired, tobacco chewing officer of an age to have seen the elephant on the battlefields of Europe or the pacific and no doubt brought up from the South Side, we asked him what was going on. He replied 'Stokley Carmichael and that big mouth nigger,Marion Barry, threatened to bring the riot to Virginia and we were order here by the governor to make sure this is as far as the niggers are going to go'.
Those were the days my friend.

I remember 1968, watching the eastern sky turn red. I also knew people who were staying in hotels in DC when it happened. Lots of destruction, but as I remember only a handful of deaths, mostly from the fires, with as many people killed by the police as were killed by rioters. Marion Barry was virtually unknown at the time of the 1968 riots. He had only been in DC for a short time and his activities were nothing that would have brought him to the attention of the VSP.

Also "South Side"? This isn't Chicago. Southside is the preferred spelling for the area in the Virginia Piedmont south of the James.

Cool old town pic "Peacemaker" Bill N . The freighter was probably unloading news print at Robinson terminal for the Washington Post who may have owned it then . Katie Lanes marina was in that area in the small cove next to the torpedo factory only one of two places US Navy torpedo's were manufactured the other plant was in Newport R.I. all a part of the Washington regions national defense effort to name a few with the Pentagon, War Dept ,Washington Navy yard and gun factory , Naval Research Lab , 8th and I US Marine barracks, Indian Head Maryland's gunpowder plants and Dahlgren Virginia's navy testing facility who fired the big 16 x 50's and 8 inch guns off barges down the Potomac past Colonial Beach which still goes on today, the navy also tested the Alexandria factories torpedo's off barges farther down river at Piney Point Maryland where a WW2 German submarine lays at rest now explored by recreational divers, the sub sank by the US navy after reverse engineering everything on it after it was captured

I never knew their was an asphalt plant or what that is next to it, there were shipyards there in Alexandria's history , many wooden ships were built there over many long years since just Alexandria was founded . During WW1 there were wooden cargo ships 300 ft long built there that were deemed unseaworthy by the US Navy in a huge scandal and taken to Mallows Bay on the Potomac across from Quantico Virgina , they were burned to the waterline purposely by the govt and later people salvaged bronze and other metals off them , today they are relics still there a hazardous area accessed by kayakers and canoeists watching the many birds and wildlife and bass fishermen

Interarm's did indeed have a spooky past and relationship with real spooks , the place was a now and then haunt of numerous gunslingers who also enjoyed the wares of the Full Metal Jacket store below in its later years, today it is the site of the new Old Dominion Boat club who obtained the land in a trade as Alexandria city has created numerous small green parks along the river, when the project is completed it will be a park like setting almost a mile long with the Alexandria City marina offering tour boat rides and resturauants plus the abundance of fine dining in Old Town within a short walk but sadly the finest of all dining establishments is missing as Arthur Treacher's has not been seen, perhaps one got the nod at MGM Grand Casino to further draw in the suckers for a bet, adding a Tippys and Jack In The Box would truly seal that deal. Imagine three top flight resturauants in one place ! See you there Bill when they come . You do wear reddish golf type plaid suits like S John did I take it , are you bald too ? , in any event S John was a terrific leader in Fairfax and later all of Virginia. Keep up the good Peacemaking work and stay safe out there with your family too of course

Posted by: Das Boat U-1105 The German Sub ()
Date: August 01, 2021 02:38PM

There's some interesting history of this sub , it was sunk in 1949 in 91 feet of water off Piney Point Maryland in the Potomac River . The US Navy detonated a 250 pound depth charge placed 30 feet away from the sub .It lifted the sub out of the water and sank to remain undiscovered until June 1985 when divers found it

The German crew surrendered the sub on the 10th of May 1945 in Scotland escorted by British warships . Later the sub was turned over to the US as a war prize . The sub was 220 feet long before being sunk and weighed 747 tons it could travel submerged for 80 miles and on the surface 8500 nautical miles at 10 knots with a maximum speed of 17.7 knots about 20 miles an hour . It was launched on Hitler's birthday April 20th 1944 . U-1105 was one of 10 German U boats that were coated in black rubber to elude allied sonar It was given the nickname "Black Panther" with its sister ships

During WW2 the U-1105 on its first mission badly damaged a British warship the frigate HMS Redmill off the Irish coast which lost 32 crewmen and was towed to a Irish port where it was scrapped

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Redmill_(K554)

Today the sub is part of the Maryland Historical Trust . Divers are allowed to visit the sub and must file a dive log report with information about their dive and the condition of the sub with the trust . The dive down to the sub is considered to be an advanced dive as the trusts information is that the conning tower top is 65 feet down and the subs main hull lays deeper

Ghosts of DC had this photo taken from the Washington Monument in 1911 looking down on Constitution Ave.

Union Station is the large white structure seen at the top right of the photo.

The school building is probably the old Legato School that was moved to the grounds of the Fairfax Courthouse.

The Fairfax Seminary is actually the Virginia Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church. When it was built the land was part of Fairfax County. The area has since been annexed by the City of Alexandria. Yes it is still there, although it looks somewhat different. Seminary Road is named after it.

The cannons at the Courthouse were a bit lame. They were mounted on unhistoric metal carriages. Also the guns face north. Yet in the raid when John Marr was killed and in the subsequent Union advance on Fairfax prior to the battle of First Manassas the Union forces came from the east, up 236.

But the cannons faced the National Bank Of Fairfax for some good jokes Bill

That may be the Legato School but it was moved about 1975-or 76 and was not far from its present location of course 50's cars were around then . Chain Bridge Rd would have been a big problem with that load, Im wondering if its a Grange building

The seminary is a wild looking building in the style of the day and the name of the road now makes complete sense . I have felt "calmer" driving past that green space where the Theological Seminary is at just by thinking of cloistered monks peacefully studying inside its nice to have such places in todays crowded areas

Yes the union forces were to the east of Fairfax toward DC and Alex areas , have you ever visited Ft Willard off Ft Hunt Road its in a circle in an old majestic subdivision at the top of the hill gifted to the county by the son of the subdivisions builder in the 1970's who owned it and had to pay taxes on property he could not do anything with. Ill keep his good name out of this forum only to say he was also an "old salt"

On second thought the windows on the building aren't right for the Legato School. What Grange building were you thinking of Lame Old Coot? It could also have been a small chapel.

Fairfax Library used to have in its collection a book on the Union forts around Washington. One summer I used it to hit a number of the forts on the Virginia side. I had discovered Fort Willard earlier when I had a client meeting in that neighborhood.

Raquel and Ann Margaret were hot enough, but by the time I got to high school they were all in the Mom Zone, and MILF wasn't a thing yet.

Something up Great Falls way . But that's not it either The Grange its bigger

Ft Ward in Alex is another fort but you probably have been there so have I as well as Ft Washington and the cannon on the bluff across from Belle Haven Marina Ft Foote which are still there and are huge Dahlgren guns

Two other historical artifacts still standing are the original boundary marker to the south marking Wash DC's southern most point in a concrete box on the waterline at Jones Point light and another in a cage on the parking lot of a church First Baptist Church Of Alexandria on King street Rt 7 on the outside of the DC line but I cant see it on Google maps I did see it there years ago . There are more out there

Several things to notice

Memorial Bridge not yet finished - See the cranes installing draw span Opened 1932

No Jefferson Memorial - 1943

No Pentagon 1943 - Land was the site of the old Washington Airfield

No National Airport - Opened 1941

Take the pic up to 250% to see good details - Enjoy

If ADC was vigilent about its updates the map would date sometime in the mid-1970s. Lake Braddock opened in 1973 setting the earliest date. Burke Center which is missing started in the late 1970s, setting the later date. Also Southern became Norfolk Southern in 1982.

I don't understand your use of the word "If". The ADC sold their road maps at every 7-11 in the area, and new updated versions were provided as quick a possible. Your use of the word "If" is highly accusatory, and you are implying the ADC was remiss in their business.

I have a 1973 ADC Northern VA Street Map (library discard price $4.00) that shows similar pages but the Lake Braddock SS site is unnammed "school site." So the posted page might be from the next edition of the map.

Its crazy all the open space that are now totally developed. This WAS a wonderful place to grow up!
