Waples Mill house used to get flooded every few years by the stream. Final resident cut and split firewood all Summer into Fall and had that entire front porch stacked from floor to ceiling with several cords. Think the house was finally demolished in mid to late 1980s.

How do water moccasins with cotton mouth know not to swim across the river?

Is there something magical about the north bank of the James that keeps them from crossing the river?

The remaining dry pond beds and former wetlands were developed into poorly built overpriced exceptionally narrow five story townhomes. The moldy sheet rock came from China. Most of the owners remain underwater on their mortgages.

Rosslyn Virginia early 70s probably. Note the WV&M bus that was taken over by WMATA (metro) in 1973. The AB&W bus line was taken over by metro at that time as well.

Flying into Virginia. See the Pentagon to the far right, and the Masonic Temple in the far foreground.

The boundary channel looks much wider than today, or is that just the camera perspective?

There are a couple of areas of Arlington in the picture. I am guessing the stuff far west of the Memorial Bridge is...Ballston? And the stuff about half-way down is Arlington Village maybe?

Agreed. The car service is a nice marketing addition, especially given the reliability of some cars on road trips.

Wish I could find some better photos of Goldie's. Old beat up picnic tables, and 4x8 sheets of plywood painted yellow with Snoopy and Charlie Brown characters on them ringing the parking lot.

Behind Goldie's were woods, and that is where the Bunnyman lived.

Remember buying 10 cent paper kites at Robertson's 5 & 10 between Drug Fair and Super Giant.

I can't place the radio tower, but the photo looks to be early 1980's.

I will venture a guess on the dates of the photos - The Annandale Road area photo was taken in 1966

The RT.1 photo was taken around 1977

Great photos

I see it as the Annandale Rd one could be as early as late 1965 based on the 1966 Chevy Impala.

The Rt1 photo could be as early as late 1971 as that generation of Ford Rachero was made between 1972 and 1979, but got bumperettes beginning in 1976.

Given the gas prices it would fall somewhere between ca. late 1973 and ca. 1979. Before the Arab oil embargo regular gas at over .40 would have been high. That was back in the days when you could get a free glass with a fill up.

My neighbor's cousin went to high school with your mom; such a shame, your mom loved the cock. She did the entire football team for three semesters. They all got genital warts and syphilis. She did the soccer team on a train ride to the regional finals. There's no telling who your real father is.

The cannon is at the intersection of W.Braddock Road and Russell Road. The cannon was abandoned by General Braddock in 1755 in Alexandria, so there is no need to remove it for being racist.

The cobble stones were removed from Alexandria streets and were used to construct the base.

I wonder how many times this has been hit by speeding drunk drivers?

The cannon wasn't always aimed to the west. It used to be aimed to the east. I have no idea when that change was made.

There's a plaque on the ground nearby. It's on the corner with the Seventh Day Adventist church. It was put there in 2015, on the 100th anniversary of the Braddock cannon's dedication.

Braddock Cannon
Alexandria Times, February 5, 2009

Image: 1917 photo fo the Braddock Cannon Monument located at the intersection of Braddock and Russell roads. Photo, Library of
Congress.

In 1755, British Major General Edward Braddock assembled his troops in Alexandria in preparation to defend the western frontier against the French and their Native American allies. Joining him was his aide-de-camp, George Washington, who was familiar with the region having fought there the year before. When Braddock and his expedition departed, they left behind a number of cannons in Alexandria. Braddock was later killed during the Battle of the Monongahela.

More than 150 years later, the Colonial Dames of America worked to convert some of the cannons into monuments that marked the route Braddock had taken. On May 26, 1915, they dedicated the monument situated where Braddock and Russell roads intersect today. They unveiled the monument, hidden behind a Virginia flag and a British flag, and presented it to Mayor Thomas A. Fisher. The mayor acknowledged the work of the women saying, “the woman behind the man behind the gun made success possible, or, on the other hand, soothed the pangs of defeat.”

The cannon, seen in this photograph taken around 1917, was mounted atop of a base of cobblestones collected from Alexandria’s streets and cemented together. Marble tablets on two sides record the significance of the cannon and the route that Braddock’s army took on its way out of Alexandria. Another Braddock cannon was converted into a drinking fountain and is located in the 100 block of North Royal Street.

(Apologies if this is the wrong thread.) Does anyone know what used to be where present-day Braxton Wood Ct. is located, near Pan Am Shopping Center in today's Covington townhouse development? As a kid, I remember seeing an abandoned (?) farmhouse and buildings behind the townhouses and it seemed 'other worldly' then. Completely random, remembered these recently and curious who owned them and if there were any photos. I haven't found anything online or a confirmed address. Thanks all.

Thanks! Do you know if that's the house in the green square on the photo? A 1960s map of Fairfax and has the property lot "22," maybe "9029" street address. That's where I remember seeing it in the late 70s/early 80s. Just curious.

I believe that entire plat of land between Rt 50/Lee Hwy where the townhouses and Pan Am shopping center are today was owned by the Covington family into the late 70s - I knew one of the grandkids(?) in the 80s that lived in Mantua.

I grew up in that neighborhood, glad that it's still there. I was afraid it might have offended some little douchebag and been removed. I rode my 10 speed up that hill every day, and sometimes Walter Reed hill as well, got some big ass quads and calves from doing that.

Due to the fact no pictures of gay porn can now be posted on FXU, all janitors or building superintendents should check to make sure the doors to the roofs of your tall buildings are securely locked

Yep. And for extra nostalgia, those entrances are labeled "Trans World" and "Pan American."

And, when there were only a few international flight routes out of Dulles.
Adjacent Dulles Marriot used a British double decker bus as their shuttle.

Great old photo. I will venture a guess of summer of 1965

Nice 1962 Chevy Impala, 1963 & 1964 Ford Galaxies and a Ford Mustang

White odd year plates on the cars.
