The smog is less today with newer cars even with far more people and cars, now if Democrats would stop illegals from entering the US and cut way down on legal immigration we don't need , we can keep it just the way it is . Instead of making our lives far worse as they lie about how we need far more illegals sneaking in and public charges they need to really make some more smog they can lie and try to blame on Trump 20 years from now instead of fixing it today

What's wrong with taking care of the US people. ITS OUR COUNTRY !

The photo with the Grants store is a shopping center on West Broad Street in Falls Church, VA. Just to the right, out of line of sight of a photo, was a Dart Drug Store. It is now a Staples. Just west of this shopping center and across a local street is another shopping center with a Giant Food.

On the https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/maps/aerial-photography website the NADA building is in the 1976 image, along with several other large buildings right next to the Government communications tower. One of those buildings, which appears to be where the Doubletree, is in the 1972 photo. So I would suggest this photo is from the very late 60's.

JKJ opened about 1974 and there was a barber shop in the dealership.

Mr John Koons Sr. died young in 1978 at the age of 59 , he opened Koons Ford in 1964. Koons SR was one of the top Shelby GT dealers in the US .

John Koons Jr sold out in the early 90s to his brother after having financial problems, he owned a good number of dealerships and that was when the Keating Savings and Loan scandal occurred hurting many business people when customers could not get loans , it was not a time for overexpansion .

My dad bought suits for work from the Tysons Mall Raleigh's store in 1970's. I was a little guy and always begged to visit the aviary section at Tysons with all the birds.

I always smile when I see the top photo, not because of the tornado of course, but because my eye is always drawn to the People's sign. People's was my first job out of high school 30 years ago, albeit it was the People's at RT 50/Gallows Rd. Good times. Good memories. The management of that store put a lot of faith in the 18 year old me! I learned a lot about responsibility, integrity and a good work ethic while working there. I wish I could thank them all.

Don't think buses back then had air brakes. Stick shift transmissions, drivers smoked while driving and life was good.

There seems to be something missing.

In the early 1980s I worked with a woman named Blevins. I remember her telling me about her ex-husband's family and Blevins town but she never told me where it was.

Almost 1/3 of the people of Pound are named Blevins, the other 1/3 are named Mullins and then there are Meades and others and many of them work mines down southwest Va.

In the late 50' and all during the 60's many came to NOVA due to mine shutdowns and black lung 60's . Hard working decent American people they are . Some went to "Wise Teachers College" now known as UVA Wise

His son was trying to establish a Cold War museum at the Lorton prison site where the Nike missiles were at about 15 years ago , the hot armed real nuke ones as a final air defense to protect Washington DC against Soviet bombers it would have been a interesting place and a memorial to those who served during the cold war.

OK - Not to create drama. This is a cool picture, but I have a doubt about when it was taken.

Look at the trash can in front of the house. We didn't have those large plastic rolling cans back in 1972

Maybe someone's Grand Daughter is posing in Grand Ma's vintage bell bottoms that have been stored in a trunk for the last 45 years.

Yes. Quite often, circa 1976-1978; about the same time that your posted image was made. We would skip class at McLean High School and drive up to Difficult Run, then hike over to the Black Pond Quarry, and smoke pot for most of the afternoon on the rocks at the quarry or along the river. It was a popular spot on weekends and during the summer months too. On occasion we would meet some of the gals from Madeira.

There were a few places to park back then along Georgetown Pike. Fewer homes existed, although some were under construction.

Gosh I miss living in McLean at that time, and I feel fortunate for the experience. Especially NoVA during the fall and winter holidays. Christmas was always fun at Tyson's in those days.

That is awesome. My daughter went to summer camp at Madera. I lived in Western Fairfax County in the 80's and we would go out to Beaverdam Reservoir and smoke pot, try to catch fish and canoe the reservoir. Different times! Hahahahahaha!!!

I see nothing but white people in these pics. Fairfax is definitely seeing better times today.

Madeira had a large chain link fence around it; you could see it from some places over by the quarry. It kept the students in and the riff-raff river rats out. The gals had a hole cut in it so they could sneak through, they could put the chainlink back so you couldn't really tell.

About half the student body were locals, the other from privileged elitist locales elsewhere. They scored some weed from us periodically.

Back then an oz of columbian gold or panama red went for about $30 to $35 dollars an ounce. A quarter pound was about 90 to 105. Thai Stick and Black Bud showed up about that time, it was a bit more expensive. A singleton gram of hash typically sold for 5 to 8 to 10 dollars, depending on quality and supply, Pot was common, and rarely in short supply; there would be an occasional dry spell from time to time.

McLean was the epitome of privilege, albeit very cosmopolitan. Still is. There were people from all of the world attending McLean's Fairfax County public schools in 1970s. It was fairly diverse in that regard. I lived there as a kid through most of the 1970s, Madeira was elitist, no doubt about it.

No I did not go there, twice. No I was not there one night and had left just before the cops showed up. The Quarry it seems was a rite of passage. It was one of those things you did so you could say you did it. The great stories that came out of it always started "A friend of mine...." If you lived in the western half of the county there were plenty of more convenient places you could go to party. I suspect the Nike site was similar.

It looked something like this, except for that natural water slide which looks really, by the way.

So rather than finding a photo of the Great Falls area, which is amazingly easy, he posted of photo of Minnesota and said "Virginia looked like this". Duh. How stupid is that. Go fuck yourself.

First of all, why do you have to be a dick?

Second of all, I'm not the guy who posted the photo. Just sayin'.

Third of all, it was clear (at least to me) that this was NOT the actual Black Pond, more, it was a representative of it.

Finally, a photo of the "Great Falls Area"? What the hell would that do, when trying to show what Black Pond was LIKE? Which, you should know, his photo was in fact a good representation.

You sound like a heyyyooooge Jagoff.

Actually, Black Pond never looked like that. I've been there many times, I grew up and lived in McLean and Great Falls. I own property in the vicinity. The geology is completely different, as are the surrounding trees and other flora.
In addition, there is no slope like that, with a stream inlet into a shallow wading area.

Drownings at Black Pond and also along that stretch of the adjacent Potomac are fairly common. It's easy to become entangled in deadfall or other semi-submerged detritus and drown at Black Pond and the Potomac.

The water is Black Pond is unhealthy. Swimming in Black Pond could easily result in a serious bacterial or amoebic infection, including tetanus or gangrene.

In addition, cottonmouths and copperheads are native there. Swim in Black Pond, run into a nest of cottonmouths, it will be your last mortal day on earth.

The only semblance in that posted Deluth image to Black Pond is that, it too is a body of water with a cliff. In Black Pond's case it's pretty much still water surrounded by cliff since it was once a quarry.

The "dickishness" in this thread is mostly from people posting off-topic images not of Fairfax County, off topic trite drivel, political rants, sock puppet trolls with their narcissistic and sociopathic behavior, and a general lack of kindness, courtesy, politeness and consideration displayed by a small number of posters (most especially by one mentally unstable and emotionally fragile and immature individual in particular).

If you are going to spout off your crap, get it right. Cottonmouths ARE NOT found in the DMV area. Southern Virginia in the swampy eastern portion is where THEY ARE found.

Get it right or go home -

I've been to Black Pond MANY a time, and, the photo of the quarry, while not an exact match, gives a pretty good idea of what it looks like.

And yes, cottonmouths are NO WHERE near northern Virginia. Found occasionally in Dismal Swamp, no further. And they don't "nest".

So, you sound like a typical redneck who, every snake they see, suddenly becomes, "I done seen a cottonmouth!!! It was ten-twelve FOOT long, and it was a chasin me all through the brush!!!"

Impressed that you own land, or whatever you claimed, near Great Falls. Said no one ever.

I had male pattern baldness, depression, impotence, and I was infected with Covid-19. My wife brought me two gallons of Black Pond water. The effect was miraculous. Almost overnight my hair started growing again, my covid symptoms completely disappeared, I'm always happy, and our sex life couldn't be better, we get it on several times a day now. After almost a year, I can actually pull my hair back in a pony tail. The wife loves it, she just won't stop! (*wink* *wink*)

Black Pond Water is now part of our daily routine, A couple cups before bed every night. We make our coffee with it in the morning, and its great for afternoon tea too!

Now that the weather is turning warm, we will be there partying it up at Black Pond, and jumping off the rocks into the naturally warm waters below.

I just can't say enough good things about Black Pond and how it turned my life around. Even my business improved, with an influx of new paying clients; and my creditors forgave all my account's payable too! My employees are much happier. I started using it for the office water cooler. Simply filling old Diamond Springs jugs every couple weeks. Saves more money, Thanks to Black Pond Water, they are much healthier, I can cut back on their health insurance too.

Oh, gotta go, wife is beckoning for more attention; we mix our lube up with Black Pond Water, drives her crazy she just can't stop...

Having grown up next to Black Pond, in a van down by the river, I can honestly say the only cottonmouths at Black Pond are from the potheads passing their joints and toking on their bongs. While their bong water may look like Black Pond water, it's more than likely the opposite. They dump their bong water in the pond when they leave for the day.

Correct. Water moccasins(cottonmouth) most northern habitat in Virginia is the southern shoreline of the James River.

Anyone remember that barn that stuck out in the road on West Ox, heading south just before Oxon Road? It seemed like a hairpin turn as you went around that barn but looking at the 1976 aerial, it doesn't look that way at all. Driving on the road now, it's almost impossible to remember how it use to be.

I remember it being a old house with a front porch that had been hit several times. The house had black shingles used siding. Back when West Ox Road was 2 lanes.

Thanks for a fantastic photo.

Later it had junk on the porch. I thought it was a old store. I think it was in the last 20 that it was removed and the bend straightened out a bit just before Floris the once black School on the left heading up to Herndon/ Reston. It was beat back as long as I saw it from the early 70's .

There was a stone house on Waples Mill Rd.; down in the lowlands, before the split to Oakton Road. That thing was literally inches from the road. It had a cement front porch and you could see where cars hit it/brushed up against it and chipped off some cement.
