It was built as a volunteer station in the mid 60's behind the Dixie Pig to the right , looks like a smaller water tower is up on the hill by the airport . That's one of the highest points along the Potomac going down river to the bay a bit higher then Westmoreland Cliffs and also to Richmond straight down Rt 1 The cemetery is behind the airport Groveton Elm is to the bottom left

Oh well, since I can not be banned by the owner of this website (gutless).
I will proceed with another old picture (really) from Fairfax County for your viewing pleasure.
Now, I know all the crass morons here will have a field day with this including the website owner.
I'm the ever optimistic person who wishes, that kind of reaction, will not occur. Don't hold your breath.

"Dickie House, Great Falls of the Potomac, Va., in Which Every President of the United States Dined."
Circa 1907 - 1914, a postcard with a 1 cent stamp. (Where is 50 Cent when you need him?) - I don't need him.
How many Presidents consumed food there? Who knows, but if true, George Washington was one, and other up to the late 1800's.
Tried doing some internet research, to find any data to confirm this post, but unfortunately, no luck. But the University of Maryland has this info on it's website.
Maybe the house was flooded out and destroyed by flash flooding along the Great Falls river area, along the Potomac, huge flood stages over the last 100 years.

Cheers and Amen.

Damien,

I am not sure what you want from this thread. Your moods swings from conversational, and you post a photo or 2. The next day you are confrontational and abusive to others, including Cary.

What do you want? This is a great thread and there is much to learn about this area.

Please be a constructive member of thread and enjoy what others are offering.

As someone mentioned to you earlier, there are many other threads to exercise your thoughts if you need to in a more flamboyant manner.

Best Regards

The old Penn Daw fire station is now A & A Rentals and is considered historic. The link below takes you to a detailed aerial photo of the corridor, with a detail of the fire station at top right.

Nice looking people the racists , the Democrats who run FCPS say were horrible racists on the FCPS school board who named the schools Jeb Stuart RE Lee and Mosby Woods in honor of brave Virginians, people who came from different areas of the USA , people who fought in WW2 and WW1 to defend and save this country so FCPS idiots can run it into the ground even though no one was concerned about the schools names until just a couple years ago when BLM started up

The people in the old picture look like honorable real Americans to me and millions of others , none of them unconstitutional stepped on a African Americans neck , and only one on the Fairfax school board was even from Virginia !

There's a real sickness going around in America that's worse then Covid 19 and will kill far more people in the hundreds of millions in time , its called the liberal Democrat pandering weakness and when it hits its peak there will be no need for any old pictures of Fairfax County forever as the Red Chinese are not interested in them one bit

Old Iron, what can you tell me about this picture, Camp American University? Belvoir, VA? What water is that - the Potomac? “Belvoir, VA” is, I guess, what we now call Fort Belvoir. So, I guess we’re talking about the potomac at that point? American University is so far from there - not even in VA. I’m so confused.

What do you think those folks are doing? I’m guessing they’re unloading from the boat at the end of the pier. I wonder if it is a ferry, just carrying cargo from one side of the river to the other? It looks like one pier is in ruins.

What is the year do you guess?

Can someone educate me please?

This is what little I could piece together caucasian. I am sure others can supply better data.

Belvoir was the name of a plantation of the Fairfax family located just down river from Mount Vernon where Fort Belvoir is today. The U.S. Army established Camp Humphries on the land during WW1. At the time it was built Camp Humphreys had no rail connection to DC, so much of the traffic in and out would have come by river. Piers into the Potomac River would therefore make sense.

The Camp American University connection is harder. During WW1 the U.S. Army took over the American University campus in DC and constructed Camp American University where they set up their chemical weapons operation. You probably remember maybe 20 years ago when they were digging up a bunch of those chemical weapons in some fashionable DC neighborhood.

Now here's my guess. In May of 1918 the U.S. Army began running a gas warfare training program at Camp Humphreys. This program was probably being run by the Chemical Warfare troops from Camp American University. What you may be seeing is a picture of the pier being used by troops from CAU when they were conducting their gas warfare programs at Camp Humphreys.

Plenty of racist Democrat politics were dIscussed at the diner, the N word being as common as a cigarette and a cup of coffee. Nothing has really changed with the most racist political party in US history except common use of that word which has been replaced by smiles and lies.

Places that had ABC licenses served ice and mixers you brought your own bottle. Some clubs and places had cabinets where customers could lock up their bottle. In the early 70's or late 60's that changed to ABC licensed restaurants being able to serve mixed drinks but they could not serve more then one drink at a time to you and if moved from table to table the waitress or waiter had to move your drink.

Stores selling beer and wine could not advertise with signs outside and still can not like they do in advertisement sales prices of booze and beer festooned on liquor stores in Maryland nor can places in Virginia say they are just a Bar, as all places that sell alcohol on premises must serve a quantity of food in proportion to the amount of booze or beer sold. Additional all boozes comes from state distribution stores with the grand daddy of all liquor stores in Virginia being the states main liquor warehouse off I95 in Richmond by the "Diamond"

All in all Virginias ABC rules and sales are much better them Maryland's where political corruption often rules in obtaining licenses and only two stores in a county can sell beer and wine , while all liquor with beer and wine must be sold in liquor stores. In Virginia The state gets a cut of ever sale with state ABC stores and that's all right with me as beer can be sold anywhere . Im not in favor of privatizing state ABC stores either. Also some counties in the southern areas of Virginia were dry and some counties years ago old only sold 3.2 beer by law as did Northern Virginia Comm College and a a much smaller George Mason U which both had fabulous beer party's with the loud rock music to the enjoyment of many who holed up the GMU Rathskeller and rock band cafeterias turned into concert centers with the foamy 3.2 suds in days of old. Your old pal DAJAX Correct me if I'm wrong as its been a long time now .

Bars are places to drink and that's it such as in Maryland NYC and other big cities , they may have some drinkers food which is what greasy food is called such as fried chicken wings, burgers, fries nachos chili and other tasty easy to make cheap treats but most real drinking bars have nothing but maybe a gum and candy machine . Taverns have drinks and food as well with many specials and may have rooms available for a overnight stay much like cozy British Irish and Scottish pubs as they all did in days far gone by. DAJAX

The 1925 USGS quad map for this area shows a short pier sticking out into the Potomac from the tip of the "Camp Humphries" peninsula. I'm guessing that's what is shown in the old photo.

I'd cut and paste an image of it if I were at at my desktop.

Interesting info Emmett. Did the map show whether the rail line to the Camp had been completed yet?

Just some old family photo of Reston avenue. Remember when we had inspection stickers that were only good for 6 months? And I think that county sticker is 1970..something. Can't quite make it out, 1977 maybe?

Or a lane on Rt 50 , probably near where Fairfax Harley Davison is today . Access roads and three lane roads were a Virginia trademark that were dangerous and contributed to many wrecks. Access roads are still in use in some parts of Virginia and can be seen in the Virginia Beach area.

I believe that's a Ranchero. The tail lights are similar or same as a Falcon of the same era. Early 60's for sure.

Looks to be a Ford Ranchero 1960 thru 1963 built on a Falcon chassis.

I can't remember if the rail line went to the pier or not. I'll see if I can find an image of it. If so, I'll post it here.

Here is a screen shot from the 1925 USGS map for the Fort Belvoir area (on the Indian Head quad map.) The location of pier is shown with an arrow. The 1918 map does not show the pier, but it is shown by 1923. By 1939 the pier was gone.

Regarding the above USGS quad map of Fort Belvoir, notice that the very tip of the peninsula is marked "Humphrey's Nat For." This is the abbreviation for HUMPHREYS NATIONAL FOREST.

From Wikipedia:
Humphreys National Forest was established in Virginia by the U.S. Forest Service on April 10, 1925 with 3,184 acres (12.89 km2) from part of the Humphreys Military Reservation, now Fort Belvoir. On April 11, 1928 the executive order for its creation was rescinded and the forest was abolished.

Who the hell ever knew about this obscure little corner of Fairfax History??

I did. Ha! My Father was military. His good friend was in charge of building the Engineer Museum at Belvior. It has since been closed and moved out to Fort Leonardwood I think.

Western Fairfax,

I guy I worked with 20+ years ago told me that is a facility used by the Federal Marshals for the Witness Protection Program. He was stationed on the USCG side of the property while he was on active duty in the 80's/90's.

I did. I was stationed permanent party at Belvoir for a several years. I usually did two to three TDY stints elsewhere in the world each year, and returned to Belvoir for about three months of downtime. Typically spent life-gaurding the indoor or officer pools and teaching marksmanship at Quantico and AP Hill. Got to learn quite a bit of history about the place. Best duty station ever for me, although I rarely ever spent more than a few months there out of any given year.

Belvoir had a pretty nice skeet range not far from where that pier was located.
The engineers had a put-in for their watercraft and patrol boats in that area as well when Belvoir hosted the US Army Engineering School.

It's grown and evolved significantly over the past four decades.

I heard different, but I can't recall what I was told. At one time there was a Wullenwebber "Elephant Cage" antenna installed there, to listen in on Soviet radio transmissions. This may have had something to do with that, But maybe not. You can see evidence of another one near NSA Fort Meade:

My HS Rifle Club (.22s) used to hold practice and matches at the indoor target range at Ft. Belvoir. It was housed in an oversize Quonset Hut, as I recall. This would have been 1968-1970 time frame.

We could take our rifles to school, but they had to stay locked in the trunk, only to be opened when at the range. I have a hunch that neither the old range nor the Rifle Club exist any longer. Public access to the entire Fort changed dramatically, and probably permanently, after 9/11.

Yes it did. A couple of them. I believe the one you mention was on North Base, not too far from Woods theater, and the outdoor amphitheater, and the north base golf course (in the 80s sometimes referred to as the "back 40"). Further down the road from McRee Barracks and the north base mess hall. I taught several classes there as well, for various people, cadets, USUHS students and similar medical students, law enforcement, folks like yourself, scouts, general public firearms safety (offered gratis by Belvoir).

Skinifatz - these from an internet search with led to twitter and patch.

I probably have some 35mm SLR images of the wooden Indian and tobacconist signage from Skinifatz' lobby somewhere in a box in storage. Pretty sure I have Belvoir Grille images too; Doris had several of my unit patches, tabs, badges, appurtenances, and affiliations on the memorabilia board behind the bar.

Would love some Belvoir Grille pics.

Also, have noticed that the Hillbilly Heaven sign is still there on Route 1, but now all you can see is the frames of the letters "HH".

Kinda cool...Dan Akroyd was known to be there on occasion as his parents in law owned the joint.

Yes indeed, HH was another frequented spot at that time; mostly circa 1981-85, less frequently later on after I relocated to Campbell and other places. Never had a problem in HH. Some Belvoir engineering students did on occasion offend the locals or bartenders in HH and it usually ended poorly for them. HH had some good live music, and the bartenders were a hoot.

Donna Dixon parent's owned HH, and yep, she and Dan would grace the place with their presence on occasion (they were married in the early 1980s).

I will have to find the box where all those old photos and negatives are located. Mostly shot with a Canon A1 35mm, and also a Minolta 110 waterproofed to about 1atm depth.

I tended to hangout in Old Town, Georgetown, Skinifatz, Thomas's and the Grill while at Belvoir. I'd stop in HH on the way to Skinifatz, and sometimes linger once or twice a month depending on what was going on. However, most of my teen years were in Mclean and I would be up there a lot too; Evans Farm was a cherished place since I was about 10 years old.

The Grill was easy to get too from McRee barracks. There was a small barely noticeable footpath through the woods between the old depot and Rt 1 on north base that led almost directly to the Grill. Thomas's had great live music too, small little Korean place by the Hess station.
