GREAT pic Fran...that is the one and only Little Tavern I was ever in, when we first moved here...my Dad and I were waiting for my Brothers JR Achievement session to end. I'd say that pic is late 50's...early 60's.

Nope unfortunetly you would have to deal with insurance companies and liability. No fucking way in this day and age you could get away with supplying an electric heater to be placed in a vehicle at a drive-in movie theatre. Not going to happen.

The drive in theater in Goochland has old school heaters but you have to pay extra to use one and you have to leave a deposit on them until the heater is returned.

Guess that Ford Dealership fell on hard times. Here is a 2019 photo of the property as it was up for sale.

Yeah I did not recall a Fair Oaks Ford either. You solved the mystery Old Iron. I bought a brand new 1988 Ford ranger 4x4 at the ford dealer in Manassas back then. It was a great little truck that had outstanding off road capability. Mine was a 5 speed manual with that granny gear and it climbed rocks like a billy goat.

The critique was about US insurance costs and how liability lawyers raise costs which is quite true and one of the reasons Obamacare failed as there was not a word about tort reform in the law to hold costs down , yes liability lawyers put much more money into Democrat's pockets then the NRA even has

The response

"Vote Blue, or watch your constitutional rights continue to erode at an even faster pace."

NO its the Democrats that are eroding and oppressing constitutional rights in this country , one look at the second amendment is proof beyond any doubt, the danger is if they can negate the 2nd amendment by judicial activism alone or unconstitutional laws passed by simple majorities by congress or state or local authority backed up by judicial activist federal judges and justices then Democrats can nullify any amendment or words in the constitution without amending and ratifying any constitutional amendments . A Democrat end run around the very US constitution that protects the American people from tyranny

Amend and ratify your amendments to the constitution as the law demands as its been done 27 times already you god dammed typical pompous Democrat hypocrite and liar. Stop your cherry picking the American peoples rights under the constitution

The vandalism has been ongoing from far back in time according to this interesting article "Weed" is the obvious culprit from years ago, much of it grew in the Burke country back in the early 70's when watching long hairs strangely going into no mans land would often lead to its discovery after VW hippy buses and bugs with peace signs and flowers were sighted along roads in Burke

From the article where the pics came from that I just found googling Marshall Cemetery Burke after seeing them here , the current graffiti appeared in 2019 , your Historian of FXCO DAJAX who once briefly talked to Roy Marshall a few times who was a founder of the Burke VFD and Fire Chief , he passed about 1973 Im sure he's buried in his family cemetery a place I have known of but never have been in there myself

https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/marshall-family-cemetery

HIDDEN IN THE SOUTHWEST CORNER of Colonel Burke Silas Park sits a gravesite marking the burial place of two early and prominent residents of the town of Burke. Even after years of various vandalism and graffiti, this landmark of local history still stands strong, and with a small secret of its own.

In 1852, about nine years before the outbreak of the American Civil War, John A. Marshall and his wife, Mary J. Davis Marshall, bought 50 acres of land in what is today the town of Burke, Virginia. The Marshalls played an integral part in the early growth and success of the newly established farming community, known as “Burke’s Station” at that time.

John Marshall served as the first postmaster of Burke, while also running the Marshall General Store (which was located 100 feet west of the cemetery). He worked as an agent for the Burke Railroad Depot, and as a foreman for Silas Burke, the gentleman whom the community was named after. It’s believed the Marshalls’ residence was located somewhere in the proximity of what is now the intersection of Burke Rd. and Old Burke Lake Rd.

The 14-foot monument that marks the couple’s burial place features an inverted torch on each of the pillar’s four corners, with a draped urn on top, which is the only piece of the monument visible from Burke Road. At one point, the monument had three separate foot stones beneath it, two of which bore the initials of John and Mary Marshall, while the third was curiously carved with the letters “J.L.B.”

The Virginia residents would have seen much activity during the Civil War, and according to a local newspaper article, a soldier who was involved in a nearby skirmish in the area crawled all the way up to the Marshalls’ doorstep before dying of his wounds. The couple found the man a short while later but could not identify him or the origins of his uniform—i.e. whether he was part of the Confederate or Union Army. The only form of identification found on the man were the initials “J.L.B.” printed on a sword he was carrying. The Marshalls would end up burying the unknown soldier in their family cemetery.

As the community of Burke grew in the 1970s and ’80s, the gravesite began to see much more foot traffic, but with that came many incidents of vandalism. The gravestone was heavily graffitied and vandalized to the point that the urn on top was broken off. In 1988, the site was restored with the help of Ann Brown (a local descendant of the Marshalls), the Burke Historical Society, and the Burke Manor Civic Association. A chain link fence was erected around the gravestone to prevent further damage.

Nevertheless, in 2008 the gravestone was again heavily vandalized, graffitied, and trashed. These new incidents led to the creation of the Fairfax County Cemetery Preservation Association, whose volunteers cleaned up the site. Unfortunately, as of 2019 the monument is again covered with graffiti and awaits another restoration project.

Know Before You Go
If you're looking at the nearby 7-Eleven from outside, you'll see a brick wall to your right that separates the small shopping center from a neighborhood park. Follow that wall (going south towards Burke Rd) to where it opens up to a trail that leads into the Colonel Silas Burke Park.

Once you've reached the trail, walk about 10 yards and you should see the tombstone ahead of you on your right. Be aware that due to so much vandalism, local police routinely patrol this area. Best to visit during the day. Do not hop any fences and obey all posted signs. Please do not add to the graffiti or trash that may be found at the cemetery.

The cemetery can also easily be viewed from the road in wintertime.

I believe the Spring Hill Motor Lodge was on the left side of the road when heading east on Columbia Pike shortly after going under Route 7. Who here remembers when that intersection was a traffic light?

It had a Steak and Egg Kitchen on the first floor. Perhaps people who were visiting the NASSIF building stayed there. And I don't think its been gone THAT long either. Of course the postcard always makes the neighborhood look more desirable than it is in reality.

That Spring Hill motor lodge looks like it was a nice place. Looks like maybe they had balconies in the rooms. These days it is hard to find a motel room with a window that opens let alone a balcony. I hate not having some fresh air locked in a room all night that smells like cleaning chemicals.

Great photo!

Has a great mix of everything that are memories. This was a good one to identify as it has been years since I last saw one. My "Guess" is a 1965 Buick Wildcat.

I included a photo so the audience at home can compare. Note the angle of the tail lights.

According to the information on the Annandale Chamber of Commerce website, the area photographed is a NIKE Missile site.

There were several types of NIKE Missiles, and some were active longer than others.

This has been a interesting photo to research, although there is little information about this missile site out there.

Please post additional information or corrections about this photo.

the aerial photos of Annandale is NOT a Nike missile site. It is an antiaircraft gun site which operated until the missile sites were built elsewhere. One of the buildings remains as an out-building for a home subsequently built on the site.

You are correct. The site was designated W-63 and was in existence from 1951 to 1957. A battery of 710th AAA Battalion, a Virginia Army National Guard unit, was there from 1951 to 1952. From 1952 to 1957, the site was manned by Battery C, 14th AAA Battalion. The last unit stationed there was Battery B, 70th AAA Battalion, in 1957 before the site was deactivated. The site was equipped with 90mm antiaircraft guns; the AAA gun sites were equipped with either 90mm guns or long-range 120mm guns (nicknamed the "Stratosphere" gun).

That's a 1967 Ford Country Squire. It's in a familiar location -- gas is being put in the tank.

I used to own one. It was like a limo. I never should have got rid of it. Sigh.

Not 3 Chefs but an early (late 50s?) McDonalds. It's still there in updated form.

I think you have it backwards. 3 Chefs would have been just beyond the intersection of Annandale on the left of that picture.

One of those old houses fronting Arlington Blvd used to have someone advertising palm readings/fortune telling. Anyone else remember that? Anyone know anybody who went to them?

Correct, the 3 Chefs was on the left, part of The Governor Quality Inn.
The palm reading place was on the left also. It was the house next to the Merchants Tire. I worked at the Merchants in the late 70's. It was a Gypsy family that ran the palm readers. The father was name Sam, he had two sons that were pain in the asses. They always wanted their cars worked on for free. Sam was a nice guy. They would have big gypsy parties and cook all this food and Sam would always bring a couple plates loaded with food over for me and one of the other guys. We would get off work and sit around out back with Sam and drink beer. Heard Sam passed from a heart attack many years ago.

A scenic overhead view of my neighborhood, where I "grew up" taken in the mid 1980's of Random Hills Road, our home on a perpendicular side road of Random Hills Road, address 4115 Gateway Road, Fairfax, VA

Parents purchased our single family home for $21,000 in 1960. Area west of Fairfax City down RT 50.

I attended Jermantown Elementary School for 6 years (now politically and correctly named Providence Elementary) , then Sydney Lanier intermediate from 1968-1969, then Oakton High School 1970, and lastly transferred to and graduated from
Robinson Secondary High School in 1974. Parents sold the home for $240,000 2 days before Sadam Kuwait on 2 August 1990. Red Circle marks aprox home location.

Not a bad investment I must say.

Photo taken for future development sites.

Cheers!

I am studying that picture Damien and I can't figure out how west bound traffic on Route 50 would access I-66 going eastbound. I don't remember that being a limited access interchange in that time period. What high school did you feed into in those days?

Also what would be politically incorrect about Jermantown? It was the name of that intersection dating back to the 19th century. I know Providence as an early name for what became Fairfax City.

I am not exactly sure when it went in but that sounds about right. West of Kamp Washington Route 50 was part of the old Little River Turnpike.

In the mid Seventies I worked construction with several Fairfax County old timers. They told me when Arlington Blvd was put through they constructed junctions for roads that were planned but not yet built. On weekends those spots were used for high school kids parking.

Yes, but I think I was a little off. It was probably the 1940s when they built that section of road. You can see the aerial shot of its absence in 1937 using this tool:

Well, it's my recollection, and I could be wrong, that Jermantown Road was once called Germantown road. But after World War I, it was renamed Jermantown Road. PC stuff back ten, local folks upset, not sure why, maybe the road having "German" in it.

Regarding "I can't figure out how west bound traffic on Route 50 would access I-66 going eastbound.", this areal photos shows dashed lines for future road improvements and new roads as well new access to I66 west bound on RT 50 from Waples Mill Road to go

east bound on I66. The whole interchange changes over 40 years. But the one above was one of the first to be done on RT 50. I used it to commute to Langley VA for work. Guess for who?

Did not know that Fairfax City was once called Providence City. Nice to know, thanks.

My route to Jermantown Elementary was from my home - Gateway Road, right onto Random Hills Road, to right on Route 50. Then left on Jermantown Road, then school on the left side.

My route to Sydney Lanier intermediate was Gateway Road, right onto Random Hills Road, to right on Route 50. Then left on Jermantown Road, right on Orchard St.

past the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, then right onto Bevan Drive, school on the right.

My route to Oakton High School - Gateway Road, right onto Random Hills Road, to right on Route 50. Then left on Jermantown Road all the way after it intersected Route 123.

Then to Blake Lane and left to side street - to High Oakton School.

My route to Robinson High School - Gateway Road, left onto Random Hills Road, all the way to Lagto (side streets and stops along the way) which intersects Lee Highway.

Left on Lee Highway, right on Dixie Hills community, for more side streets and student pickups, then back to right on Lee Highway toward Fairfax City.

Right on Shirley Gate Road all the way to Braddock Road. Left on Braddock all the way to right on Sideburn Road, Robinson High on Left.

This trip to Robinson High was all due to County School redistricting to enforce new School busing regulations. It was a mind numbing useless exercise in social justice, 60 minutes a day for 3 years.

In my 3 years at Robinson, I met less than a dozen people of "DIVERSITY".

Hope that explains my post Bill.N. ()

When first built, Rte 50 connecting what is now Fairfax Circle with Kamp Washington was known as the "Fairfax Bypass."

>Did not know that Fairfax City was once called Providence City. Nice to know, thanks

That's why the name Providence was considered to be the new City of Fairfax County's name. it never happened , people would rather send millions to Richmond in an area of 1.2 million people then keep it here with all the benefits a city has over a BOS county government such as hotel motel taxes dry cleaning taxes yes food tax and restaurant tax plus others without referendums , Democrats never met a tax they did not like so why not join in like the rest of Virginia has. If its good for the goat ....

I've said it many times on FXU No ones really in charge in Fairfax County there's no mayor and city council and money goes elsewhere in Va as the result with little accountability, why do you think the City Of Virginia Beach exists and so many other small cities that were once counties all small fry compared to the mighty economic engine of Fairfax County the Jack Herrity built , today Providence Virginia would be the 10th largest city in the USA far larger then San Francisco and many other well know cities. But since Fairfax is into "pride" change some more school names while keep on sending the cash to Richmond to spend "South Of Any Rivers" while becoming a city would put the cash into the cities coffers to rename those schools in style and have lots of the greenbacks left for other "worthwhile causes" LOL!

Me and my good neighbor friends use to ride our bikes from Random Hills to a place called Kamp Washington Pizza - late 1960's. Run by an old couple of immigrants from Europe, that passed the business on to their children and family members. Best PIZZA ever except in my memory New York pizza on Long Island. The place was renamed Pizza Rama and expanded to more space. Don't think they exist anymore.

I think it was. If you went to Rt 50 from Jermantown, Waples Mill, etc. you were guided down Rt 50 East, left on Rt 123 and then onto I66 East. Up until the point the put the access ramp in and I cannot remember what year that was.

That was Henry's snack bar. He was the same guy who started Henry's towing. Back in those days Henry's towing was a cool and helpful company and not the predatory snatch and run screwjob company that they are today. There is at least one picture of Henry's snack bar in this thread somewhere but I cant find it.

Not sure about the date but you are correct on the spelling. My 19th century maps show it with a G rather than a J.

Town of Providence actually when it was first formed, although it was still unofficially called Fairfax Courthouse. The first use of the name Town of Fairfax was for what is today Culpepper. For a time this caused a great deal of confusion. When Culpepper changed the name it freed it up the name and the Town of Providence changed its name to the Town of Fairfax. That is also the origins of the Providence magisterial district.

I stand corrected on the Route 50-66 interchange being limited access at one time.

The Aerial Imagery site for Fairfax County shows no ramp from 50W to 66E in 1980, but it is there in 1990. I really wish they did not have a 10 year gap in imagery during such a pivotal time of expansion in Fairfax County. :-( And of course there was nothing there in the 1960 image but the interchange is there in the 1976 image. Again, a 16 year gap in coverage???

That is a great photo. And I love the annotations. I never knew E-Systems was off of Waples Mill. Only knew of their facilities on Rt50 just inside the beltway and the one in Springfield. Then they got bought by Raytheon. Boooooo!!!

I thought the "Greasy Flyspecked Shack" was called Goldie's. Sold soft ice cream as well. Sticky picnic tables. Yum

As I recall it was both. Started out as Henry's and later became Goldie's. I have seen a picture in this forum somewhere.

Andy posted this photo a few years ago, and Goldie's can be seen on the left side of the photo. Lot of things in this cool photo.

See the big ice cream cone?

Wish I could find a better pic of the place. I remember it was yellow and had a bunch of picnic tables. The were 4x8 sheets of plywood that were painted with cartoon characters making a fence around the property.

Anyone got any pics of the old Hudson Gas Station that was very near the old Fairfax High School, and the McDonald's?

Some additional information:

That aerial view of Fair Oaks and Random Hills area was provided to my mother by either Farifax County or PCA (Property Corporation of America). Not 100 percent sure it was PCA. Anyway, some inquiries
were made to the residents for the further development of the Fair Oaks area. Random Hills built in the late 1950's, there were about 20 some single family homes. In the mid 1980's most of these families had children
who graduated High School and College, no longer lived there with them.

So my mother formed a neighborhood community to negotiate the offers made by PCA to buy the properties. So all the owners combined their land parcel sizes and settled for several million dollars, each owner
getting a share of the total based Home values and land held.

My user name is this forum is based on my middle name. When I went to Jermantown Elementary I recall looking out the school windows seeing them building route 66 westward.

When our home was purchased in 1960, there was only gravel roads to access Route 50. No street lights, no Dulles Airport, no RT 66, no Beltway. There were bobcats, raccoons, possums, owls, as well as other natural critters.

There was a couple of farms on Ridge Top road. One belonged to the Bellard family, which had a barn with horses and acres for them to feed on the grass., Used to feed them apples and carrots with their son Paul supervising.

You could see the stars at night, fire flys would come out during the summer in droves. 90 percent wooded areas in Random Hills, air as fresh as it could get. What a paradise to grow up in.

We had no central AC until 1968, so in the summers, windows were left open and it could get pretty humid outside and inside. Some times hard to sleep at night.

Here is a photo of the old homestead in 1989. My future brother in-law's Honda parked out front.

Cheers.

Hello Ernest. For privacy's sake I not going to provide more than this. I found your name regarding a Robinson High School resource I have. If your last name started with the letters "Sc" then I vaguely remember you. Thanks for your post.
