Yep, remember the bowling alley. It was one of those duck pin alley's. Had hamburgers and fries there when me and my friends used to ride our bikes out from the current Fair Oaks mall area. There was a similar alley at the middleburg community center pool and park. Once went on a "field trip" to it via bus from my elementary school, Jermantown elementary, in the mid 1960's. Now the school is PC, and has been renamed "Providence elementary".

Oh one more thing: artilce today about the same street the alley was once on.

Who is old enough to remember when the DMV gave you these key ring tags with your license plate number on them? The idea was that if you lost your keys and somebody found them they could be dropped into any mailbox and returned to the owner. I remember my Dad saying that it would also make it easy for someone to steal your car because the tag number was with your keys. I guess in those days people respected each others property much more than they do today and cars were rarely stolen.

I just did a little research on the key tags. They were not issued by the DMV but rather the DAV (disabled American veterans). They would send these to you in the mail for free and asked that you make a charitable contribution to the DAV.

We got those tags one year Fred. My father threw them out. We fished them out of the trash, put them on string and turned them into dog tags.

I was just down at Beacon Mill on Route 1 this afternoon -- thinking that stupid Rite Aid, that is now closed, took the place of a classic.

Another place further south near Thieves Market was the Rib Rack. Loved that onion ring loaf and a pitcher of ice cold beer.`YUM!

I don't remember it. All I can find is the minutes of the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals. (These are large PDF files with OCR text. Searching is a pain.)

https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/planning-development/sites/planning-development/files/assets/documents/bza/meetingminutes/book_10.pdf
page 149

This regards a 1962 application for the school on Willowmere Drive, at what I take to be about where Schafflind Court now is.

https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/planning-development/sites/planning-development/files/assets/documents/bza/meetingminutes/book_15.pdf
pages 69-70

This is a 1971 notice that the school is being sold, and is mainly a board pissing match over what process is/isn't required.

Nothing even vaguely resembling a school seems to be on that street anymore.

I missed a detail at the end of the debate.

The school permit was transferred to the Creative Country Day School. I know there are several Country Day School members in the area. No clue whether it merged with one of them.

Last bit on the Dunn Loring Woods School.

I played around on historicaerials.com and Willowmere Woods Drive first shows up in the 2002 aerials. It isn't there, at least in the current shape, in the 1998 topos. Earlier aerials show two buildings in that area.

(Can you tell I'm avoiding work?)

The Washington Monument had beenfinished. I'm surprised it's so far over to the right.

I see some '59 Chevys (one covertible, one hardtop), a couple of Ramblers, and a Renault Dauphine. Is that an AB&W bus?

What are those strange objects by the side of the highway? Are they what people used to call "trees"?

Suddenly I'm feeling really old. It doesn't help that the TV special that heralded the opening of Disneyland was aired 65 years ago today -- and I watched it.

Could it possibly be the Alexandria Masonic Temple? It does seem to be too far to the right to be the Washington Monument.

Where did the train tracks cross Shirley Hi-Way? Seminary Road area?

The railroad crossing was between Glebe Road and Shirlington, which at one point was an industrial area -- there was a cement plant and Washington Gas had its pipe yard located on the west side of Shirley Highway. This was before the road was interstate designated. It was part of the Washington and Old Dominion RR.

I remember being stopped by a train there when my grandfather and I were coming back from Arlington, and thinking this is a stupid place for a railroad crossing...

I am trying to figure out what at white steeple structure is on the right side of the photo.

The Masonic Temple would be too far away, and the Washington Monument would be much taller at 555.5 ft.

It looks like the top of the Masonic Temple, but that is in Alexandria. Spent most of my time in the Northern part of the county, so I am not sure if it is viewable from Shirley Highway.

If it is the Masonic Temple it would be on the opposite side of the road if the photo was taken facing south. The Temple would be impossible to see if taken facing north.

The negative of the photo isn't flipped as the road signs are correct. Sometimes photos are printed backwards due to a processing error.

Big tall church in that area?

I was going to say early 1950s on the HoJo picture based on the vehicles. Three of the cars look like they dated from 1948 or earlier, but the partial vehicle on the right has newer lines. Then I found the picture online. https://www.alexandriava.gov/uploadedFiles/historic/info/attic/2013/Attic20130328HoJos.pdf This says the picture is from 1949.

I think that's an AB&W Transit bus in that picture. Speaking of which....

The Internet Cars Movie Database says a 1948 GMC TDH 3207 painted in the AB&W livery appears in the 2006 movie, The Good Shepherd.

Unfortunately can't date those photos, but dam...

If the first one is the aqueduct bridge out of Georgetown into Rosslyn, look at Rosslyn!

Nothing there at all!

I think the second one is the same aqueduct bridge, just after its use had been converted from carrying the canal over the Potomac in Rosslyn to vehicular traffic, right?

Can't narrow it down too much but it was originally built in 1843. The first photo looks very early on as there is no infrastructure in Rosslyn. It was drained and turned into a road during the Civil War (1861-1865). Turned back over to the Alexandria Railroad and Bridge Company after the war. The road remained until it was turned back into a viaduct in 1866. In ~1886/1889 the wooden superstructure was torn down and replaced with iron trusses to carry foot and wheeled traffic. In 1916 a new stone bridge (Key?) was built and the viaduct bridge abandoned. It was finally torn down in 1933. All this is from a bunch of different articles I came across. I sure there is a definitive story/history out there somewhere.

In the second picture the bridge has no trolley tracks on it. I believe Great Falls & Old Dominion constructed trolley tracks over the bridge in 1906, so before that. In Rosslyn to the left of the photo you can make out the old Consumer Brewery that was constructed in 1896. So I think Old Iron is correct with circa 1900.

In the aqueduct pictures looking into Rossyln, I try to see how the canal went down toward Alexandria, but I never really can, I just imagine I see it.

When we were teens, we use to go down to the Smoke-Ins on the 4th of July. Most times we parked on the Virginia side of the Memorial Bridge. Sometimes in the Pentagon parking lot but mostly just in the grass along side the Parkway. We would setup stakes on the grassy banks of the Potomac in the early evening to see the fireworks show at dark. In the meantime, we’d go across the Memorial Bridge to explore the happenings closer to the Washington Monument, the Reflection Pool and everywhere in between. One year, it may have been the Bicentennial, we ran across a dead dog at the top of the bridge. We decided to do everyone a favor and throw it over the side of the bridge into the water. Dreadful mistake. We stink, stank, stunk like dead dog the rest of the night. Live and learn.

I just remembered, while still on top of the bridge, we ventured to go down some stairs. We went all the way down to the water and found a door that was unlocked. We opened it and looked inside but I don’t remember exactly what we found, but it must not have been more interesting than where we were headed because we didn’t explore very long before we decided to continue on our trip across the bridge.

You know, some of the best old buildings, Fairfax demolished. Now they want an “old town” Too bad they didn’t realize that when they really had one.

Not caring one bit about politics . Id rather see young people at smoke ins on July 4th then statue bashing and insane protesting of nothing of true value by ignorant hateful people who think they can reinvent America to become a communist horror of torture and death to those who don't agree with their masters

Bring back the loud bands and the old couches the beer in the coolers and let people have at it

No wonder people are so consumed with politics today . Democrats ruined everything in the USA with their in your face "we have to protect you from your self ", "we know it all but don't follow our personal example" attitude suppressing our freedoms bit by bit with one major freedom under attack that has the strongest language in the constitution to not touch the right conveyed upon us by the founders "Shall Not Be Infringed" The Second Amendment

The Springfield tower when it was younger. It looks better without all those antennas and stuff mounted on it today. From what I hear it may get the wrecking ball in a few years.

I'm sure the HVAC and electrical are probably barely able to support the demand from modern day offices. Tear it down and build something more efficient and functional.

I wonder if this school's beginnings were a case of resistance to integration. I've had heard some private schools were started to avoid public school integration around that time. Seems the school lasted about as long as the legal bickering over integration did, which made me wonder.

It predates desegregation in Virginia by decades. DAJAX I don't think it was a black school as Louise Archer was already in Vienna and James Lee was later built in Falls Church . Dunn Loring I believe is a 1930's school maybe built in 1939 after Mt Vernon HS . It has been closed far more then 40 years now as a school . The area built up became older and the need was no longer there for the school as newer schools had been built . It became an admin building which it still is last time I passed by

I think this is looking East. Armstrong street is to the right (and off camera).

Looks like the firehouse about center.

The street left to right is Chain Bridge Road.

To the upper right are the town houses.

Late 60s maybe?

Photo maybe from 1968 when the building was being erected. Many changes since then, but the basic look is still there if you know what it used to look like.

Great photo

My guess is a 1971 Plymouth Duster. Reason is those are 1971 Plymouth wheel covers put on various Plymouth models.

People swapped wheel covers back in the day, so the Duster could be a a 72 or 73. Note the decal on the front fender. Demon?

Late 1970s very early 1980s because of the Chevy Nova at the top of the street.

Great pic - Thanks!

Damn Old Iron , I missed the Chevy Nova. Got to be late 1974 or later because they made that body style change for 1975. You are the man when it comes to old iron.

I believe it just says Duster. From the photos I can find it looks the base model Dusters just had "Duster" on the front fender and the ones with the 340's had "Duster 340".

You are correct. Thanks for the help. I has been a long time since I have seen one on the street.

Those things would fly with a 440 but you had to do the swap.

Dart Drug, Crown Books, Trak Auto, and parts of Total Beverage and SFW were part of the Haft empire. I think it was WTOP would play soap opera organ music when they were going to have a story on the family feud when the old man divorced his first wife and was excluding the children from the empire. It was a huge mess that resulted in everyone loosing out.

I think that Total Wine was another company altogether.

IIRC the Dart Beer stores were only in DC and Maryland. Virginia ABC control laws at the time did not allow the word "beer" on public signage. Same reason the Steak and Ale restaurant between Annandale and Fairfax had to use the name Jolly Ox.

Electric in car heaters optional? That is so awesome. Maybe the pandemic will cause a resurgence of drive in theaters open in the winter and we can have in car heaters! If they had the technology for that back then it should be a piece of cake to do it today.
