SOUTHERN TOWERS SINGLESPACE

Richard Thomas doesn't miss much from his terrace in Southern Towers. Before his morning ablutions in the snug "bachelor" efficiency, he usually grabs his binoculars and steps out to greet the dawn.
Perched on the 15th floor of the Monticello Building, Thomas trains his field glasses on the four sister towers: the Sherwood and Berkeley looming off to the right, and the Stratford and Ashlawn rising ahead across the green.
"There's a lot of folks out there who keep their blinds open," he says, cradling the Montgomery Ward binoculars, a gift from his ex-wife. "I can see into all the buildings except the Monticello. There's one woman, 10th floor of the Sherwood, who wakes up at 6 o'clock every morning, stands up in her bathrobe and then -- ta da! -- tosses it on the floor. I don't pay much attention to her anymore. A lot of times I'll see other people with binoculars, and even telescopes, checking things out the same as me. I'm not the only pervert with a pair of binoculars."

Look at all that wooded land between Seminary and Route 7 in the Seminary Towers picture.

I'd love to have that exit at 395 (Shirley Highway) and Seminary Road now. It takes forever getting through that light coming from the hospital to go South on 395.

Great Post Swinging 60s!

Nice article on the swinging southern towers of the 70’s. It reminded me of when I lived in River Place towers in Rosslyn in the early aughts. I hooked up with my neighbors too and international lifeguards. One summer I had two lifeguards living with me. They are married now too but we had fun lol

I lived in the Berkeley 1968-69. It was indeed crazy back then. Why commute to the clubs downtown when all the pussy you wanted was either down the hall or a short elevator ride away? The parties often began on Fridays and ran through Sunday nite. One memory that stays with me was the Sunday of the moon walk watching Neil Armstrong walking on the moon and me walking over to my SE facing window and looking at a near full moon hanging high in the sky above Landmark. Weird

Sunday nights a lot of the crowd moved over to Village Inn on Duke St. where a very talented black guy played some type of keyboard.

Should I mention during that era, Southern Towers was virtually all white, everyone spoke English as the mother tongue and knew how to properly dispose of trash down the chute to keep roaches away. Good times gone forever.

The rail line that crossed thru Del Ray then crossed over RT 1 and the RF&P rail yard. The rail line then crossed thru old town Alexandria to the bridge over the the Potomac river into Maryland.

Notice the islands near Alexandria?

I know it’s not Fairfax county but still local. I used to live in this building. I never knew there was formerly a penthouse restaurant in it. I found a couple of Washington post reviews on it. One from 79 and another from 82. Anyone have any pics or memories or the place?

Yes, those caught my eye. I don't know when that rail bridge was removed. You'll notice there's no Potomac River Generating Station. That was built in 1949. Look at the woods between George Mason Elementary School and Beverley Hills. The houses along Allison Street date to 1955, give or take.

You can follow the Rosslyn branch of the W&OD through north Arlington, past Washington-Lee High School.

What is that bridge between the Pennsylvania Railroad bridge over the Potomac River and the 14th Street Bridge? It goes about a third of the way across from either bank and then stops.

Fascinating picture. Thanks to the original poster for putting it here.

I noticed a tiny black rectangle in the Potomac River just off shore of the white marble steps at the Lincoln Memorial.

It was a floating concert barge, and the spectators sat on the marble steps. I found photos on The Ghosts of DC website.

Concerts were held from 1935 to 1965 until the passenger jets flying out of National Airport killed the concert venue.

The Who could have overcome the jet noise.

The steps were intended for boat arrivals of important visitors, but that never worked out, so someone created a concert venue.

Have a seat in California State Prison San Quentin's lime green octagon gas chamber Antifa arsonists, the gas will be right with you

That's the way the USA should still roll gas to arsonists, child molesters, cop killers , mass murderers and drug kingpins.

Gassed 2 killers at a time when they were partners in crimes of heinous murder

Today California leads the nation in liberal insanity keeping over 750 of the worst of the worst killers on the planet earth in "Condemned Row" at San Quentin forever, an act itself that is unconstitutional as it infringes upon the right to a speedy trial and punishment with some prisoners on the row now for over 30 years, slapping fully across the face thousands of murder victims loved ones and friends

https://www.marinij.com/2020/02/13/california-to-move-some-condemned-inmates-off-death-row/

Given the choice the convicts say they will ignore that unconstitutional act of resistance to the legal California death penalty laws that have been confirmed by California votes in special referendums that have been refused to be followed by Democrats in full control in favor of the condemned convicts not having to "whiff the peaches in the corner" a saying at San Quentin that goes back to when they hanged prisoners in a corner of the prison yard modified by adding the word "peaches" being the smell of hydrogen cyanide gas which actually smells like almonds and kills in minutes

Perhaps the state of Minnesota may consider building a gas chamber with 4 seats in it to keep the roads open in the USA and Fairfax County and free of idiotic white liberal protestors who violate so many others rights to free movement who had nothing to do with Floyd Georges death , then later at home the "loving libtards" franticly call police when a black man comes to the door trying to sell new windows

Doubt it's 90s.

Newest car in that pic is early 80s.

The Z car is probably an 82 or no newer than an 83 (last year of 280ZX)
The Nissan Sentra is early 80s (silver car)
And the Burgundy Chrysler is early 80s Most of the cars in pic are from 1970s

Yes, I remember that dealership.

Thought it was interesting how many Chevy stores were around.

You had Koons of Tysons, Peck in Arlington, and then Rosenthal, just a few miles down the road in Arlington at Columbia Pike and Glebe.

I remember the ads for Jr. Hot Shoppes and Roy Rogers for Pappy Parker Fried Chicken. From what I understand, this was a Marriott brand and recipe that was sold at Roys and JHS when under Marriott ownership.

Did Pappy Parker Chicken go away with RR and JHS? Was it ever a stand alone or did it have any history? Or was it strictly a Marriott invention?

On the picture above PP's is advertised as Smoky Mountain Fried Chicken which I don't remember. Please tell me what you know about Pappy Parker.

I worked for Roy Rogers for a summer as a kid. We sold Pappy Parker chicken and so did Hot Shoppes, Hot shoppes jr and Bobs Big boy. There are a few Big Boy places still open in Ohio and California not sure if their chicken is still Pappy Parker or not. The chicken that Roy Rogers sells in Manassas is pretty good but it's not Pappy Parker.

Hot Shoppes had Fried Chicken on the menu from the late 40's through the end...The name Pappy Parker Smokey Mountain Fried Chicken was introduced (in Name) @ 1965 to coincide w/ the Jr Hot Shoppes openings. The Smokey Mountain name was a hook thing like Kentucky Fried.

Yep. Once I learned to brine chicken I have never looked back. It is an easy and inexpensive way to really enhance the flavor of a boring piece of chicken.

Nobody lives there. It is a Fairfax County Historical Site. It is managed and operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority. You can usually visit it, but alas it is closed because of COVID-19.

Roy's in McLean sold Pappy's Chicken, circa late 1977 to early 1978 when they first opened. They were located where McDonald's is now; neighboring J-Gilbert's was Joshua Tree and had a Sangria Fountain if I recall correctly. Pappy's chicken was okay. McLean also had Holly Farms and Ginos-KFC which enjoyed a lot of business, Extra Krispy KFC was the big seller in the boxed chicken arena. Roy's Double-R-Bar was a popular sandwich back in the day.

Sangria Fountain. Sounds sanitary. Kinda like those chocolate fountains some people still use. Just collecting all the airborne germs and particulates and circulating them through the fountain. Yum! What was the "steak" place near Fairfax Circle that had the chocolate fountain? It was up near Fairfax Propane.

I grew up on Memorial Street, about 3 blocks from Beacon Mall. Shopped there for a decade in the '70s. Walked or rode a bike past it nearly everyday to attend Bryant Intermediate and Groveton HS and see my friends in Hollin Hills.

Stuff like that is dubious. The Sangria Fountain was basically a champagne fountain that circulated Sangria. The basin had floating fruit in it. Wine glasses at the base. Glasses were filled from the fountain spouts, but they had a couple ladles on hand too. I was too young to drink in public. The fountain was nice ornamentation, but I never drank from it, nor did my parents or sisters. The food at Joshua Tree wasn't too bad. We dined there as a family on rare occasion, a couple times.

We usually went to Evans Farm Inn and Sitting Duck Pub if we dined out. Every couple months for dinner, and Saturday or Sunday brunch about once a month. As I grew older and lived and worked in NoVA, I frequented Evans Farm Inn as well, until they shutdown. I believe I was one of their last customers when they finally closed up for business.

My sister worked at McLean Theatre for years, and also waitressed at George's Pub when they first opened while on summer break from college.

Hey, Rolfe...as I remember, kids who lived in Hollin Hills went to Fort Hunt High?

Maybe I have that wrong, but there were some weird boundaries...like, VillaMay kids went to Fort Hunt even though Groveton was right there?

And, way back when, Yacht Haven kids went to Fort Hunt instead of Mt Vernon, even though Yacht Haven was basically right next to Mt Vernon, both the house and the school?

The picture of the Redskins facility on Rt 28 brought back a good memory. Back in the 1960's the Redskins used Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA for summer practice. They stayed in a dormitory near my grandmother's house. While I was on my annual week long visit they frequently walked from the dormitory, down my grandmother's driveway, to alleyways that led to the practice field.

I had many conversations with them as they walked past. I spoke to Norm Snead, Bobby Mitchell, Vince Promuto, Charley Taylor, and others. My cousin, who lived in Carlisle, was more fortunate. One season he was named the unofficial mascot for the summer practice.

Good times. I doubt any child has the same opportunity today.w

The boundaries changed in the late 70s to bring more of Fort Hunt Road area into Groveton. Then Fort Hunt burned down.

Offered unlimited steak and Sangria from a punch bowl with floating fruit also a big chilled bowl of spiced shrimp. The only one I went to was on 236 in Alexandria by Cameron Station. I m not a wine drinker and only scarfed steaks baked taters salad and quaffed the cheapest Hobo beer as long as it was ice cold. Of course I'm DAJAX the cook Who also took part as so many did , raiding Emersons of their AYCE steaks and ice cold beer then disco dancncing under the bogus glittering ball with real women back then , guess what we did not give a rats about politics then , how quaint. We were young the Vietnam War was over , we lived life and enjoyed it with other people of different races and religions without hate

As WE were the first generation of Americans who accepted others different then ourselves as equals , only today to be smeared by copy cat young communists who will never be of any use to this country . Young people who can't think for themselves , showing it by entering into insane leftist group thinking that attacking old statues and inflaming emotions of African Americans to riot and commit arson is getting revenge on some ancient wrong instead of facing the reality of the dangers presented to American liberty and the United States constitution by the Democrats of today whom these masters of mayhem fully support

Thinking back across the years...why does it always seem like there is a People's Drug (now CVS) in the same shopping center as GIANT? Did GIANT not have pharmacies until recently? They sell much of the same products.

got shot in the head. Kashif Bashir got found not guilty, did five years in nut house. Bashir got kicked out of Alexandria, moved to Prince William County. Committed arson on two of his case workers houses and Kashif had guns and silencers. One of the guns he got legally for a Manassas gun shop, the State Police said a clerical error was made. Kashif Bashir has court in July in Prince William County in July 2020. Can’t carry a gun on Alexandria property, but you can shoot a cop in the head and get five years in a nut house.

In Democrat controlled areas where your life is not worth a dime, no CCW allowed by law abiding citizens , now to walk on a trail in Alexandria take your life into your hands . The city sent a marijuana smoke signal "All Clear" to male rapists who kill when things get tough , to keep the women quite by strangulation as they are raped and killed , when the City stupidly and hatefully passed this feel good ordinance that only punishes lawful people and does nothing to stop thuggish criminals and rapists.

Then the leniency of Democrat judges with prison sentences ," No Justice No Peace" is everyone's cry !

The fix ..Hang them high without delay ! Sorry Not Happening Why ? Democrats

Scream until its time to vote and the future rape robbery and murder victims will vote for the Democrat , Its not just your Liberty Its YOUR LIFE And That Of Your Loved Ones. That's how incredibly ignorant and hateful Democrats and liberals are as they take the liberty and lives from others breaking the Bill of Rights as they go along, Witness the Alexandria City Council and lets see what Fairfax County does after July 1st 2020. Guns banned in public buildings OK as private business owners can do that, guns banned on isolated public trails "DEMOCRAT DEATH SENTENCE" to law abiding citizens walking on those trails ! When it happens the shit will be smeared on the Democrats faces , we will watch as they try to wipe it off and lie out of it as usual , no chance to the wise , but the totally stupid will keep on voting for them

McLean's Giant had People's Drug next door, and a barber shop too. Dart Drug was located directly across Chain Bridge Road, along with World Bazaar and an A&P. World Bazaar became Crown Books, owned by the same family as Dart Drug. There was an ABC store sandwiched between World Bazaar and A&P.

World Bazaar sold import goods. Similar to Pier One but less gentrified mainstream and far more eclectic, with much lower prices and a larger volume of in-store stock. A lot merchandise from West Asia, North Africa, Turkey, and India, some Eastern Asian items too; home decor, rugs, bric-a-brac, brass and silver-plate or solid silver, reed and rattan, incense burners, candle holders, stuff like that. Usually pretty good quality too. It was cool shop located between Dart Drug and A&P; in McLean-speak for the day, one could pick up some 'cherry' things there.

Tyson's Corner had People's Drug next to Waldenbooks.

All this circa 1970s.
