Where was the Burke 7-11? Is it in the same spot as the current 7-11 near the post office and Taco Bell?

OR Tell us why you will continue to infringe on the copyright mark on the maps by not removing them , you just removed suspicious porn on that same 126 page.

If you feel the 1862 maps in question on page 126 are legally posted here for educational historical or other purposes state that as the owner of this site as an edited comment by you as you have customarily done in the past

Posted by: One Final 1862 Maps Statement ()

I asked 4 times to have the 1862 maps removed , personally I feel that the "Old pictures of Fairfax county, love em! " has content that is mostly historic and educational for future scholars to study with possible exception to some comments and pictures some persons would call inappropriate that mock political parties history in the United States or people who are public figures or are of pornographic description. I also feel the entire thread and this entire site is of historic and educational significance for future study of the feelings and speech of the American people on a vast number of topics in years to come

The 1862 maps are unquestionably historic and educational , they were also US Government produced maps , but that does not mean that the copyright can be infringed upon , or is the copyright not being infringed upon as legal free use, a question Cary Wiedemann the owner of this site must answer to the affirmative that there is not copyright infringement or remove the two 1862 maps on page 126. One further question is how did the copyright upon the maps be granted to what are apparently US Government maps that may have been classified United States information showing Union Fort positions defending Washington DC when they were printed in 1862 , and why is the actual copyright so extremely small it is not apparent to the observer . In any event Fairfax Underground is not an income producing site or a commercial site with paid advertisments, owner Cary Wiedemann operates the site with his personal financing . That is what I understand to the best of my knowledge.

Exactly ! Which begs the question of how a copyright was issued , but it is there on the 1862 maps which do appear to be US maps in the public domain

From the "maps maps maps " post It covers more area out to Middleburg and Snickersville and New Baltimore with extreme detail on the + setting, after a couple of seconds you can plainly make out the elevation details and all other features much better and clearer then the page 126 maps plus everything is the same as far as I can see including the US Govt information and also some historical details on the far left corner area

Now where's Wikis copyright. Im not down loading squat

Great historic and educational find "Maps"

Basically, STFU AH!

Most people on this site will have no issue understanding the meaning of the six letters. I would guess that you might though.

Stop whining about the issue of copyright. Nobody really cares what you think about it or that you requested 4 times (or a thousand) to have it removed. This is not your site and just because you think something should happen will not make it so. Get over yourself.

I find the content of this particular thread "Old pictures of Fairfax county, love em!" to be very interesting. Having spent my entire life in NOVA, it is great to see so many comments, pictures and information about Fairfax and the region. Even when the information is slightly off, it is still worth viewing.

Based upon the OP's willingness to let things go which he does not approve of, and cries like a baby when he doesn't get his way, I would ignore any of his ideology and posts going forward.

so again STFU AH!

Not knowing they were copyright protected as they are US Govt maps so OP has a interest in asking them to be removed , its not the same issue as you are saying Op has not said jack about other pics here to be removed unless they are porn , child porn must be removed asap or any thing that looks like it at once

Besides the current Wiki map posted here is a lot better then the ones OP posted

So Cary for the 5th time remove the page 126 1862 maps unless you post they may stay legally under US copyright law

It was on the same side of the road as the new firehouse right across the street which you can see ends , heading toward the Silas Burke house to the south. It was just about where the new post office sits, a bit closer to the fire station. Across the street to the north was a flat field then the railroad tracks , to the left was the railroad crossing in that cut of part of the shopping center which got cut off when they redid the roads , the crossing can still be seen with Bells Pond to the left what's left of it a swamp now. To the right of the store it went up Burke Road to the sharp curve to the left To the front of the store the road crossed the railroad tracks with crossing signals and arms and headed up to Braddock Road past Kings Park center some where in the mess were "weed" plants that long haired youth experimented growing as "farmers"

Can you see what Im sayin

Somebody touched them up a little bit and filed a copyright on them. They sell for like $40 online. If you ask me that is bullshit. The government did all the hard work in creating the original maps. Just because someone cleaned them up a little doesn't mean they own them. Fuck the copyright holder.

One cool thing about this map is that the Union Army got it wrong--the map shows the W&OD railroad heading north from Leesburg, when in fact it went west through Purcellville to Snickers Gap.

Time Warp Along Telegraph Goes from Revolutionary Sites to Civil War

http://www.connectionnewspapers.com/photos/2020/apr/16/148221/

{snip}

Civil War Rages On

As Telegraph Road leads toward the City of Alexandria, it passes Rose Hill, where Mosby’s Raiders went to the Rose Hill mansion on Sept. 28, 1863, and captured Col. Dulaney, a Union officer as he was sleeping. This occurred in the Rose Hill mansion which was on the hill overlooking Greendale Golf Course and Telegraph Road. One of the raiders was French Dulaney, the son of Col. Dulaney who fought for opposite sides. This story is on a Civil War Trails marker on Rose Hill Drive.

Close to the northern end of Telegraph Road, near present day Jefferson Manor Park, was Fort Lyon, one of the Union forts that was put in place to defend Washington, D.C. This fort was built in 1861 after the Union defeat at Bull Run, near the present-day location of Mount Eagle school in an area known as Ballenger’s Hill. Since it was on the highest point around, the fort overlooked Telegraph Road, the Columbia Turnpike, the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, and the Little River Turnpike.

On June 9, 1863, there was a huge explosion in the battery of the fort which killed 25 soldiers and could be heard from miles around. In the wake of the explosion, Fort Lyon, and Alexandria were visited by many military and civilian dignitaries, including Secretary of War Edwin Stanton and President Abraham Lincoln, according to a "Voices from the Past." By Lewis Bissel, dated June 17, 1863.

Glen Echo is in Maryland. In fairfax in the 1980's, if you saw so much as a bench with a sign on it, it said "donated by". Fairfax never had such a lofty fair ground. (i'm not saying glen echo did in 1928 - the picture might be a fake or authentic - but i'm not taking that one on face value - since NW of washington was, as far as you could see from highways, all farm land. i assume 1928 was the same moreso)

if we check the upper right of the photo there is QUITE THE POWER DISTRIBUTION LINES (without any trees cleared - as if they weren't important)

that would be something for farm/park land in NE maryland.

in 1928 most farms didn't have power. in 1980 some farms didn't have telephone (and a few no power either)

Definitely not farmland...

"Glen Echo Park began in 1891 as a National Chautauqua Assembly "to promote liberal and practical education." By 1911, it transformed into DC's premier amusement park until it closed in 1968."

Power? There was a power generating/distribution plant to supply the Amusement Park and the electric trolley line that serviced the park.

What are you talking about? Those are not laptops. Those are mirrors and supply cases the kids sit in front of as the women do their costumes/makeup.

So a photo of the front of the building serves no historical purpose? You people are so deranged. You do realize there are people living as slaves and indentured servants right now in countries like Qatar? Why don't you do something with your life to help those that can be helped currently instead of obsessing over something none of use caused or were involved with.

"what the roaring 1920's though farms would be like in the future" (a rare clip from a magazine)

50% of america was urban (most of those sub-urban, we would say). only 35% of Americans HAD ELECTRICITY. there were 100,000,000 pop, and that's 24,300 acres per person!

https://paleofuture.gizmodo.com/how-the-1920s-thought-electricity-would-transform-farms-510917940

needless to say, a park area miles from "the city" (which runs into NE maryland - all farm land and much of it un-developed) - it may have had power lines and plenty of money to build unheard of amuzement parks - but it's more likely the photo is not what it was advertised to be

1925
First roller coaster to reach 100 feet: Cyclone, Revere Beach, Revere, Massachusetts, United States.

https://glenecho-cabinjohn.com/GE-04.html

seeing all that - i'd be impressed if that area was all juiced up, the whole park lit, and using GE Electric motors in the 1920. it would not be either way it was or it wasn't

but the article says the park got roller costers in 1900-1906

1908: the first Electric vacuum cleaner

so either glen echo was "an unusually hopping sub-urb of DC closer to VA than DC but surrounded by farms", or something

very unusual. you start to wonder if the trains coming in from California were being robbed in that area they were so far ahead (and yet having no big businesses, like say chicago steel or auto) ! nah, just kidding.

Now that's a neat photo! The second roller coaster photo. In the middle of ..allot of deep woods in maryland - many fine auto's line up on the well built highway for a WELL LIT PARK which probably had a telephone too.

There are two very different sides of 1928.

That place looks like it could be from the 1950's (if it were in parts of the usa that were not fast in progress)

In the 1850's the Washington Aqueduct cut through the farm land by the Army Corp of Engineers in order to supply water to the city of Washington. Several quarries were dug in the area, to supply the aqueduct, producing high quality granite. In order to properly maintain the aqueduct, the Corp of Engineers maintained an excellent road from Washington all the way to Great Falls. The road ran through some of the most beautiful countryside in the region.

The development of the electric trolley opened a new era of sub-urban development by providing a fast and easy way to commute. Sub-urban development in an area like Glen Echo had been out of the question as long as a 1-1/2 hour horse drawn carriage ride was the only way into the city where all employment other than farming was centered. But with a good road, mass transit, and readily available building material (the granite) an opportunity for development was created. The late 1880's saw a few sub-urban communities in the Washington area but the Potomac Palisades now offered everything needed, it just waited for someone with a vision.

(that sounds like a development article from NYC or early england - it actually makes sense!)

(the other article goes on to say the brothers who wished to make the area "an upscale sub-urb" had contracted with Gas&Electric to bring the trolley to his land - and ended up bankrupt and selling the land to them)

AHA! So it was a dual hit of "huge government project" and "a deal with the Gas & Electric" that put a "remote suburb" on the map in 1928 (and by then, while not everyone had a car, many did. in 1901 probably not so much). It was never the center of anything but a dream to turn over unused land "into something" - as I had guessed.

(clara barton lived there - on her "we won the civil war" ... bonds, and owned ... more than just her property)

NVA had a huge number of little older homes along 50 near DC - and a small batch of them in fairfax - those were more modern and built after the (still employed part of the military) came from from vietnam - later vacated and bought by ... let's say government workers

So it appears NE of DC - even the further legs - had become areas where Civil War survivers settled. (some went all the way to WVA after the war, and such)

And the people with money after the war to resettle near DC? Well well.

so i grew up in NVA - more NW part

in early 1980s' moved to the SE part of NVA. some of my teachers were "express southerners", and many people around the town (perhaps there from farther south)

Anyway I can ASSURE millenails that "real Virginians" were SOUTHERNERS (and 1/2 of every road in Richmond was named ham, there was plenty of brick and wood)

SOUTHERN VIRGINIANS, IN 1980'S were still angry about the war and blamed the war for (their family situations - such as lack of telephone). (despite there being wars in between). and they absolutely got angry when speaking with "northerners".

They did not get this wrong. There are other maps from the time which show the same orientation.

When the Alexandria, Loundoun and Hampshire RR was originally being constructed before the Civil War the plan was to take the line from Leesburg through Hillsboro and through I believe Keys Gap before crossing the Shenandoah River and striking out towards the coal fields of what was then Hampshire County. At the time of the Civil War track was laid through Leesville with very little construction work done beyond Clark's Gap. After the Civil War the route was changed so that the line went through Purcelleville and Bluemont, from which point it was to cross the Blue Ridge Mountains through a tunnel at Snicker's Gap and then head directly to Winchester, the W&OD route we are familiar with today.

There are several reasons for this. The AL&H was descended from the planned Alexandria & Harpers Ferry RR which if built would probably have followed a route from Leesburg through Hillsboro to Harpers Ferry. By the time the AL&H got its act together the Manassas Gap was already talking about building a branch line from Centreville through southern Loudoun County to the Purcellville area. Then there was the need to tunnel through the mountain at Snicker's Gap, an expense which might be avoided by another route.

I don't see how that makes it any different from many other real estate development projects going on at the same time? At the beginning of the 20th century two gentlemen go the idea of building an amusement park at Great Falls Virginia and constructing a trolley line from Georgetown to Great Falls to get people there, and on the side pick up the odd farm and subdivide it. That project lead to the Great Falls & Old Dominion RR which ultimately became the Washington & Old Dominion, and also the town of McLean. The Great Falls amusement park never rivalled Glen Echo and was abandoned. The original GF&OD right of way is now Old Dominion Drive.

If we show it as it was, then we should try to get it right. History is a bit messier than some would like.

Byrd did not get involved in Virginia politics until around 1915. Jim Crow was firmly enshrined in Virginia before that. Jim Crow generally date from the Martin era but some are even older than that. Byrd's fault was fighting to preserve Jim Crow, not creating it.

In fact segregated schools in Virginia arose during a period of non-Democratic control. The first statewide system of free primary schools in Virginia was set up after the Civil War by the Freedman's Bureau and was for educating blacks. The Virginia Constitution of 1870 created the mandate of public education in Virginia, and a proposal prohibiting segregated schools was rejected. That was done when national Republicans controlled Virginia militarily. When Virginia passed its first law implementing public schools the law provided for segregated schools. The bill was signed into law by a Republican governor. When the U.S. Supreme Court struck down segregated schools Republican Joel Broyhill signed onto the Southern Manifesto.

Memories of a different Fairfax County , I worked with and knew many blacks in the Vienna area back almost 50 years ago who shared stories with me they went to Louise Archer then to Luther Jackson schools when Louise Archer was the principal of the school. I also knew personally and had many interesting talks with a retired high level area official who knew WT Woodson from back to the days of the mid 50's and was a principal of schools in FCPS before ascending to the area office

http://www.connectionnewspapers.com/news/2014/mar/12/looking-back-louise-archer/

Its a shame that WT Woodson is being vilified by some who want to change the name of the school named for him because he was superintendent during segregation when in fact he supported the black schools by insuring that separate but equal meant equal to the best of his ability in that day and age and worked together with black educators as Louise Archer to give black students as good an education in Fairfax County as was possible, yes in the early 30s schools still had privy's both black and white , those were the years of the depression when school money was very tight and full on racial segregation was the rule

If you take a look at the construction of the black FCPS you will see they were built to the same standards as the white schools and not shoddy materials during his years as superintendent

Overall black schools in Fairfax county fared much better then most schools in Virginia during the years of segregation and they were known as "colored " schools a term that when combined with the schools name finds more results on the internet

Luther Jackson was a 8th to 12th grade black school as elementary schools in Virginia were grades 1-7 and high schools 8-12 until intermediate schools 7-9 were built in the late 50s on. Luther Jackson was the only black FCPS in the county blacks also went to a HS in Manassas and Wash DC riding the trains back then to DC Other black grade schools were Floris , Louise Archer, Oak Grove, Drew-Smith (Gum Springs later) , Lillian Cary and James Lee

Virginia state judges get to keep their courthouse chambers desk and office furniture when they retire all bought by the state with an allowence they recieve and moved at state expense to their homes or office .Generals of the Army and Navy Fleet Admirals get personal military stewards , a govt provided quarters and their full pay for life as they are never retired. Virginia state judges get two years service toward retirement for each year they serve on the bench. Presidents like Trump get lots of bennies and a free million dollar plus secret service security detail and security improvements on their homes

Burger flippers get laid off when the only business is carry out due to virus, they also get a free kick in the ass out the door when their fired and a 401k turned into a 101 k by the time they turn 65 , dishwashers get the same so it's a free country to choose your destiny

Points about the stupid map.

1) The resolution quality of the map you posted is very poor compared to the exact same version that is available elsewhere.
2) That map is in the public domain - it is 156 years old and can't be copyrighted.
3) The company that put it's copyright on that map were idiots. You can't copyright something that is not your own and of which there are hundreds of legally acquired copies that are owned by other people. It's literally like buying a book that sold 10,000 copies and then printing it yourself and copyrighting it. That map was inside 1000s of atlases that were produced sold in the 1800s.

That's what they did to get a copyright which sucks that it would be allowed but the copyright mark is still there on the posted maps , who wants to be a test case

Bump this post if you do and download and upload the maps again

Obviously Fairfax Underground is a educational free use site there's no money being made here true there's little good advice here either that would be worth money even if the posters were lawyers . Let the Monster sleep

A couple of sneaky shots of Hogates Flagship on Maine Ave in DC and The Strand a sandwhich joint in Alexandria in days of yore which reminds me of a lil shack a crusty old bum named DAJAX has down Dragon Run who makes the best truck stop food in all of Virginia , sorry its not open to the public , just a thing to do for the old hobo who likes cheap food from roadside joints that have a greasy air to them

I would have loved to have eaten at Hogates! The Strand hit the spot In a Pinch

Post A Old Hogates menu so I can get in the mood for a big copycat seafood fest!

Thanks for the picture of the Parkington Hecht Company sign! The Arlington Theatre still lives as the Drafthouse.

Good times!
