Looking at the signs on the van. Did Stuart Rd. become a section of the Fairfax County Parkway? And is that van just some sort of shuttle service?

A 3-for-1. Brings back long lost memories; went to play mini golf with some Edison HS friends in 1985 at Highland Park. I think that was the same place that was still around all those years later...seemed out of place and old then.

Also recall going go carting way out in Alexandria? Where was this place?

Very cool photo and thanks! My best friend in high school had the station wagon Gran Torino and she drove us ALL to school in that thing.

I'll note that there are two Giant logos here along with their old tag line, "The Quality Food People." I remember them being "The Quality Meat People."

The neon, swirly Giant Food sign was I think the original, replaced later by the big G - that logo hung around until 2000?

This may have been posted before. This 7-11 was located at West Glebe Road and Commonwealth Avenue in Alexandria.

Boarded up after a murder(a white store clerk killed a black customer and planted a knife on the victim)and racial violence during May of 1970 - It never re-opened.

A new 7-11 was built close to that intersection.

https://wtop.com/fairfax-county/2020/04/1972-killing-of-12-year-old-fairfax-county-girl-has-been-solved-police-say/

Police in Fairfax County, Virginia, said they have solved the killing of a 12-year-old girl that happened over 45 years ago.

Karen Lee Spencer was last seen alive Nov. 29, 1972 in the Huntington area. Her body was discovered a few days later on Dec. 2 In what was then known as Fifer’s Field, a wooded area located near what is now the Huntington Metro Station.

She died from repeated blunt-force trauma to the upper body, the autopsy revealed.

Police now say there is enough evidence to have arrested James “Jimmy” Edwards, who was believed to be Spencer’s boyfriend, for her killing.

Edwards, who was 16 yeas old at the time of Spencer’s death, died Aug. 23, 1997.

Edwards was among several people police questioned, and he denied any involvement in her death.

In 2018, two people who knew Edwards told police that in the early 1990s, Edwards told them that he killed a girl and buried her in a field when he was a teenager.

Police received additional tips that supported what Edwards’ acquaintances said, along with findings from a previous investigation. Police were also able to disqualify other suspects.

Last December, the Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office had enough evidence that would have supported the arrest and prosecution of Edwards, a Fairfax County police news release said.

Spencer lived on the 2500 block of Belleview Avenue and attended Hayfield Secondary School. She would often play or hang out with many of the neighborhood children, including Edwards, police said.

Spencer and other neighborhood children often spent time in Fifer’s Field and at the nearby Fairhaven 7-Eleven.

“For nearly five decades, Major Crimes detectives remained steadfast in their pursuit of justice for 12-year-old Karen Lee Spencer and her family,” said Maj. Ed O’Carroll, bureau commander for major crimes, said in a statement.

Carroll said detectives’ steadfast work and the community’s willingness to come forward with information were “critical in solving this case.”

So glad to see that picture! Although my memory of that country store “7-11” all these years has been spot-on, I was only there once on a dark night and the memory seemed almost dream-like.

It hadn’t been very long when a group of us left the noise and lights of Arlington to go pick up a friend who had just moved to Burke. Riding in the back with no idea where we were going, I just remember when it started to feel like we were going downhill. Andy Ratlips Wrote:

So glad to see that picture! Although my memory of that country store “7-11” all these years has been spot-on, I was only there once on a dark night and the memory seemed almost dream-like.

It hadn’t been very long when a group of us left the noise and lights of Arlington one night to pick up a friend who had just moved there. Riding in the back of the car, with no idea where we were going, I remember we started downhill and it got darker. Thick trees encompassed the narrow country roads and it felt like we had driven into a deep forest as it got darker and darker the further down we went. Then we turned into a little country store which said “7-11”. I don’t remember anyone else being around or any other lights. Just this strange phenomenon in the center of the darkness at the bottom of the hill.

To this day, I always think of going to Burke as going down into a pit.

Fairfax really was the boondocks back then.

If you compare to the current property you will see in increase to the size of the frontage, and the utility poles are on the other side of the street.

Looks close, but I think this is another Red Barn in a different location.

My parents would take us to the S&W Cafeteria from time to time. Once they attempted to have me and my 2 siblings to eat the Liver and Onions.

First and only attempt, A fond memory that gets brought up during every Thanksgiving Dinner when we all get together.

Mon and Dad in their mid 80's wish the S&W would come back.

You had to pump the gas up into the glass tank on the pump from a buried tank till it got to a level mark at the top , then you used the nozzle to let it flow by gravity till the mark of the number of gallons you wanted into my battered pickup shown with both doors open as I got some gas and hog meat to go

DAJAX was not cold autumn morn that day , could not butcher one of my hogs on the 700 acer farm , $25000 for a lousy 5 acers was a good deal selling it off back in 73-74-75 both ways as it turned out but they still got the better of me , least I keep a couple hundred for myself

NOT Annandale - taken from the Burger Chef fan page. They were from a set of training slides and the scenery in the other ones from the set are clearly not Annandale. Just because someone posts a pic in a Facebook group reminiscing about a local restaurant/store doesn't mean they actually have or posted the actual one.

Probably a location in Indiana.

Fascinating.

“Although the manor house was destroyed by fire in 1917, the foundation still remains”.

I wonder where on that property the old foundation is? I graduated from hayfield and never heard or saw anything on this.

I cannot see anything on GoogleEarth, but I found this statement that narrows it down a little:

"The Hayfield Manor House, where they lived, once stood near the corner of Hayfield Road and Bing Court." http://www.hayfieldfarmva.com/about-us/history/

Great lead thank you! Using old satellite imagery and entering Bing court I found the ancient round hay barn.

(Here) https://www.historicaerials.com/viewer

My mistake was I was assuming the house and barn was on the actual Hayfield secondary property. I wasn’t able to pin down the actual farmhouse or remains, but the huge round barn is crystal clear.

Notice the plans for the never-completed Manassas Gap railroad. There are a few surviving pieces of the grade in Chantilly and Manassas.

Note also "Tyson" as a landowner in what was then called "Peach Grove." Cool!

DAJAX:

Did you ever have a beer / meal at Arlington Moose 1315 on Scoville Street?

It’s actually in Fairfax with a Falls Church address because of the changing postal codes. Still up and running currently, I remember back in the day they had a safe behind the bar so off-duty police (and some citizens) could put their handguns there while they had a drink. The place still has a big hall, and the bar quarters were separated by the men’s (gambling permitted) and the women’s sides.

Some good people there back then - when the tower collapsed in 1973 nearby they helped a lot with keeping people fed and a few beers too.

Owner of the internet domain http://www.fairfaxunderground.com

Cary remove the two 1862 Washington DC and Virginia maps on this page , I uploaded them not seeing any legal language as to their use with no intention that they may be used for any monetary consideration which I understand is Fairfax Undergrounds strict policy as there are no advertisements or other income producing uses on this web site that Cary Wiedemann the owner has placed here. The 1862 maps appeared to be US Govt maps in the public domain when I uploaded them , they are not .They are copyrighted material which can be seen to the far right on the bottom in extremely small print.

I request that they be removed at once from this Fairfax Underground page . I also made a request last night on this page to remove them as I stated they have a copyright mark.

I will post a link to what I believe is the copyright owners source in this post. I searched for History of Fairfax County and other terms when I came across them on the internet. The site I uploaded from I think is old it is not the source in my link below to historicmapsrestored.com . I searched for historicmapsrestored.com for the maps here I posted . They are not on that site, I don't know where I found the 1862 maps on the internet. I searched but could not find them again today.

www.mapsofthepast is listed as historicmapsrestored.com on Google who is the apparent copyright holder, they may have been sold .

http://www.historicmapsrestored AKA Maps of The Past have numerous old maps of Virginia and Fairfax County , Washington DC and other areas across the United States . Fairfax Underground readers can look at them but can not use them or download them or post them elsewhere without expressed permission of the copyright holder, as per their legal instructions as they are copyright protected.

Info on the map web sites all from Google

I attempted to post this request to remove the 1862 maps on the first page with your instructions on the use of Fairfax Underground Cary ,but there is porn on there and I immediately left that page

On Rt 50 which was on Little River Turnpike about where the toll house was by the now Fair Oaks Fire and a golf course on the same side of the road . The house was way over a hundred plus years ago with sides that looked like logs . It was moved across Rt 50 to a small road , then finally torn apart by the county about 23 years ago in the late 90's .
