If my memory is correct, it was where the Taco Bell was erected after the HH was razed.

Ha! I was just talking to someone the other day about that airstrip at the corner of Rt50 and Gum Springs. We used to go out to Beaverdam Reservoir in the late 80's and early 90's. If you went during the week you pretty much had the place to yourself.

Back Then there was not much around there. The small air strip was on the north side of Rt 50 near Gum Springs and 50 . If your a Old Loudoun County Boy you may remember Bull Smith of the Virginia State Police RIP

Oh ya, I remember the airstrip. He used to keep his plane pretty close to that corner of his property. We were Fairfax kids, but even in the late 80's there were fewer and fewer places to go where the Fairfax County Police wouldn't get up in your business. We preferred to go out to Beaverdam or even up to Point of Rocks to hang out. Used to fish under the bridge at Point of Rocks and mess around in the train tunnel; real smart weren't we!!! But we all survived.

The old building is still there on Little River RT 236. It is vacant again, and you can lease it for enjoyment.

I always thought Red Barn was much better than Burger Chef. Later when Roy Rogers came along I thought they were the best. All three of those places were better than McDonald's.

Was that location a Arthur Treacher's at some point in the 1980s?

I can remember eating at 4 different Arthur Treacher's locations years ago.

Fairfax Circle, Annandale on RT 236, Springfield on Backlick Rd, and Alexandria on RT 1 near Beacon Hill.

I have been told there was a location in the Rose Hill Shopping Center back in the 1970's, but I can't confirm that.

That's when it was brand new before 1970 maybe 1966 67 . There's no Buckaroo Steak house with a cheap chopped steak with mushrooms baked potato salad and roll and no UPS drivers in there drinking beer after work , also where is State Sen Sawslaws Jag parked in the Fire Lane ? Can you get a scan of Bazanos pizza I want to see if those pizza pans round and rectangle are up on the wall behind the cash register medium and large sizes with that flat crust and the oily grease floating on top excellent with a Ice Cold pitcher of beer then , after eating light up a cigarette and savor it all back in the day. All Nova centers were more busy back then not as many to go to and the county population was smaller about 325k but crowded in places where they built shopping centers at

That was in 69 in Arlington from the net sounds good , no wonder I liked the place ahh that Texas Toast

Buckaroo Steakhouse sounds amazing. Never went there or saw pictures, but I am imagining all the waitresses wearing little cowboy outfits and talking with Southern accents. Big ribeye steaks served with huge baked potatoes and a large frosty mug of beer. If that is the way it was someone needs to bring it back. ;-)

They were about 5/8 inch think but with what they came with and a cheap price they were Dammed Good off a flaming grated grill manned by Buckaroos in uniforms who could cook 36 steaks at one time moving rare med and well done around ! The Cowboy Waitress were dancing in DC someplace back then maybe Good Guys ?? No before its time . You pushed your tray and told um what you wanted cafeteria style like Ponderosa and Rustler later on , they had long tables to eat at commune style for the hippies back then , I sure some of those hippy girls would have loved to dance to the weed music if they could shoulder their way in between those big plastic pitchers the UPS guys were draining from up Port Royal Road and get a good snort of some cold beer to get them going all back in 70 and 71

That was the second ever location of Five Guys, at the intersection of Beauregard and Route 7. It closed about 5 years ago and I think has now been demolished. The first shop was a short distance away on Columbia Pike; it was closed so they could open up this second restaurant. It’s now an international brand, quite a good local story.

By a grease burger joint but I understand kids and what they will eat and not as I had my days making grease burgers and hot dogs and pizza and mac and cheese not fried squid for them. Today they treat me to seafood treats they love as well as me in posh places like Fishmarket in Old Town and Maine Ave in DC and especially Paul Revere smorgasbord in OC LOL

Im still one at heart but today I eat what I would have not touched with a 10 foot stick when young ..like a 5 pound lobster if I could afford it LoL , a dozen raw oysters steamed shrimp crabs clams mussels and crisp deep fried Snakehead and Squid and Octopus which are very tasty creatures sautéed boiled or steamed in soups stews and by themselves at Super H mart as snack samples freeeeee on Weekends about 2 pm

^^^Thank you for mentioning Paul Revere in Ocean City - I had forgotten about that place.

When I was little, money was tight and my parents NEVER took us kids to a restaurant to eat. Not even McDonalds. But when we’d go on vacation, Paul Revere would offer coupons where kids would eat free, and we would usually go there five of the six vacation nights. I don’t even know if it was good food, but we sure liked it!

Fantastic photo!

Early 1960's is my guess.

I remember the cannon balls stacked behind the cannons, and yes those are Confederate cannons aimed at the National Bank of Fairfax.

Anyone remember the bowling alley, the Esso station, or the Wayne Feed store all seen in this pic?

Not only that but it started an entire industry of "better than fast food but not a sit down restaurant" style burger chains. Now you have Smashburger, Elevation Burger, Shake Shack, Burger 7, BGR The Burger Joint, etc. all following Five Guys lead. Before Five Guys, the only burger places you had were the major fast food chains and Fudruckers or Red Robin type places where you were expected to sit down and stay a while. Five Guys filled a huge hole in the market and that is why they took off so quick. I always love seeing them when I travel knowing that it all started here.

I remember that crash very well. Hours later another Boeing 727 crashed in New York, killing the crew of 3.

The plane was being moved from JFK in NY to Buffalo when ice and pilot error caused Northwest Airlines Flight 6231 to crash nose down.

Some days it is`better to keep your feet on the ground.

I think that the South Gate was across Glebe from the Holiday Inn at 395. Look at all the vacant land behind it in the postcard. I think that was the postcard artist's fantasy since the photo shows buildings in the background. Would like to know the year on the postcard was mainlined.

The Holiday Inn was razed and is now some sort of apartment building.

Also my science teacher was killed in the Weather Mountain crash coming back from Thanksgiving. RIP Mr. Garwood.

Yes. South Gate was across Glebe from the Holiday Inn. The Holiday Inn/Apartment is at 2485 S. Glebe and the South Gate/Hotel Pentagon Reagan Airport is at 2480 S. Glebe. The Hotel Pentagon (https://www.hotelpentagon.net/) no longer has the amenities of the South Gate. You will have to do without the nine hole putting green, shuffleboard courts, dog kennels, and you will definitely have to find someplace else to land your helicopter. HAHAHAHA!

Yeah, those were some serious amenities. They were making up for the lack of WiFi and only 4 channels on TV.

Was all commercial back then, note the pleasure craft on the side of Haines Point and how wide the entrance to Gravely run and 4 mile run are back then where Reagan National is today as the airport area was filled in later. The rectangular Army War college is there at the end where Jones Creek is at Ft McNair by the smoke on the far shore in DC and its still a fine old building today

You can make out the row of Quarters on Ft. McNair. I read about some pretty interesting ghost/supernatural/unexplained happenings that took place in those homes. I was only there a few times with my father, and those places definitely had a creep factor just driving by.

Didn't there used to be an insane asylum just across the river from Fort McNair? Maybe that explains it. St. Elizabeth's or something like that.

That is not Maple Avenue, but Church street in Vienna. The church that you can see is still there and has expanded into a huge church known as Vienna Presbyterian Church. You can also see part of the Freeman Store on the far right

I only went to that bowling alley once. It was for a birthday party and I recall you accessed it through stairs in the front of the building. I think they had duck pins. I don't remember a feed store. Where on that block was that located? There is still a gas station at the same location, although obviously no longer an Esso.

The Tequila Grande in Vienna on Maple Ave (Rt 123) and Nutley Street used to be some other restaurant. I remember driving by it all the time as a kid. I don't think we ever ate there but I vividly remember that they had flame stickers on all of the windows. Anyone know what it was or have any pictures?

I'm thinking prior to Tequila Grande it was a Hardee's. Prior to Hardee's it was a Roy Rogers. I think that goes back to the late 80's and I've got nothing for you prior to that. It might have set vacant for some time after Hardee's.

Tequila Grande was originally built as a Howard Johnsons restaurant then became Roy Rogers and might have been a Friendly's before it became TG.

Not sure about that, but the four conspirators in the Lincoln assassination (Mary Surratt included) were hanged there. Their bodies were buried where the tennis courts are now, although they were exhumed a few years after the hanging and given to their respective families. Might explain that creepy feeling, especially having a Civil War era jail on that site!

You mean the one in Vienna? I don't remember that, but I did get my hair cut there many times as a kid. It was a one story cinder block-ish structure with several(?) small businesses in it, the barber shop being one of them. At least, that's the way I remember it.

I don't remember the Roys or Hardees in that location. Just the HoJos and then Tequila Grande, which is slated to be torn down sometime soon.

Tequila Grande opened in 1998, which fits in with Hardee's/Roy's closing in 1996.

fierceandnerdy.com/how-to-nearly-kill-a-fast-food-chain-kicking-back-with-jersey-joe

They continued to grow until 1989 when Marriott decided it was done with the fast food business. They sold off most Roy Rogers, along with Howard Johnson’s and Bob’s Big Boy locations. They wanted to focus on only operating restaurants in airports and at highway service plazas.

Rival fast food chain Hardee’s paid $365 million to scoop up the rights. Hardee’s was operating mostly in the south and wanted to enter the mid-Atlantic market. Hardee’s immediately converted 220 restaurants from Roy Rogers to their brand, keeping only the original fried chicken on the menu.

Hardee’s promoted new flame broiled burgers, but they were not the same as the original Roy Rogers’ and quickly failed. The customers were outraged at the changes being shoved down their throats and large numbers of people stopped patronizing Roy Rogers. Hardee’s quickly changed the restaurants back, but the damage had been done.

Ronald R. Powell, who had run the Roy Rogers chain in the 80s, was brought back to help restore its former glory. A high profile advertising company from New York was also enlisted to promote the brand. But, that advertising didn’t work either and the customers still stayed away.

In 1993, to try and make a step in the right direction, an experimental Roy Rogers was opened in Vienna, Virginia. This new location featured third-pound burgers, BBQ sauce that customers served themselves with a ladle, and a new dining room with televisions.

The loss to the chain was too much to bear and in 1996, Hardee’s began to sell off the restaurants and many were converted to other rival chains.

Yes! I was in Irving Jr HS. Can anyone recall if Fairfax County Public Schools dismisses early that day? Hazy memory but I associate that terribly icy day with a memory of seeing the snow fall from the cafeteria windows and then hearing the announcement that we were going home and a rush to leave. I do remember getting home and watching the live local coverage.

Hero Lenny Skutnik was from a neighborhood family and a West Springfield High School graduate.

The Fairfax Aerial Photography website has it as a vacant lot with site prep going on in the 1976 image. Wish it was easier to export images/url's from that website.
