Mrs. Bradley probably got used to it. I am sure Seaman Bradley spent many an evening in titty bars across the globe over the course of his career. Senior Master Chief Bradley might have even had his retirement party in one!!!

GREAT picture. Look at the wide-open space. So many old cars enhance the picture. I could hang this one on the wall. Thx Fred.

You have got to love the quality of color slides. I wish I had used them back in the day. Note the canary yellow VW! (1974)

"A lack of interest on just about everyone’s part is what kept the historical building from being saved” I’m guessing 1974 was a time when people were looking ahead and ready to throw away the past and that a lot of historical buildings in Fairfax were demolished in the ‘70s Progress.

I think the top of the first picture shows the Fairgrounds where the second picture was taken five years earlier.

I wonder if people took the trolly to the fair and walked down Cedar Ave to enter? In 1922 did more people drive motor vehicles or horse and buggy? Which road(s) did they take and where did they park? So many questions.

1922 Fairfax. Too bad the people in the photo can’t be identified.

The barn with the horse ring in front of it is about where Paul VI is today. The trees running left to right are Accotink Creek.

Was there ever a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) line over the Potomac between Little Falls and Chain Bridge?

There was an interesting article at Greater Greater Washington the other day.

>>>>>
Before National Landing was Crystal City, it was Brick Haven
HISTORY By Dan Malouff (Board of Directors, Editorial Board) November 18, 2019
https://ggwash.org/view/74733/before-national-landing-was-crystal-city-it-was-brick-haven
....

The 1894 map

Turn to this fascinating 1894 map titled “The Vicinity of Washington, D.C.,” published by Griffith M. Hopkins of Philadelphia and available via the Library of Congress.

The map covers roughly the area that today is inside the Beltway, and makes for an enthralling look at our region just as its suburban era was kicking off.
>>>>>

The map is at https://www.loc.gov/resource/g3850.ct003624/?r=0.276,0.61,0.24,0.149,0 .

The map shows the Georgetown Branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O). The branch comes off the mainline at Georgetown Junction, west of Silver Spring. Headed south, it crosses an electric line that goes from Chevy Chase to Glen Echo. According to this map, instead of going to Georgetown, though, the line crosses the Potomac River between Chain Bridge and Little Falls. It terminates just after crossing the Leesburg & Georgetown Pike. That road is now called Chain Bridge Road, or Route 123.

This line is news to me. Does anyone here have some more information on this? I've never seen pictures.

Thanks.

Part two:

Actually, no, it does not terminate. That's just a fold in the map that makes it appear to terminate right after it crosses the Leesburg & Georgetown Pike. The map shows it going to the southwest, through Dunn-Loring (their spelling and off the edge of the map at Merrifield.

What gives?

That map seems to show the proposed, but never built Georgetown Branch extension into Virginia.

Also, I didn’t know the tracks at shepards point reached that far out into the patomac.

The good people of the Virginia room at the Fairfax county library are looking for some help placing this hotel. They say a notation was made on the back of one of this pictures that said "route 1" . Some people thought this might be from the Tysons area. Anybody here remember this hotel and where it was located?

People parked like jerks back then as well. The red car in the top picture and the Datsun 300Z in the bottom picture are both parked taking up two spaces.

The Shoney's Inn looks a lot like the Comfort Inn that is on Spring Hill Road on the Vienna side of Route 7.

I was at the Pho place in the office building that is across the parking lot from the CI the other day and it really looks like the pictured building.

Far worse today. You don't buy a new car and keep it in Nova if you expect it not to be door slammed , dented by ghost riding shopping carts blown by the wind and simply given beat downs by bums. If it has a NRA decal or anything "Southern Heritage" Like A Rebel Flag expect keying and gouging too by the areas truly hateful ledtists

Who are you addressing your question to? There are literally hundreds of photos on this thread. Some of the photos posted are photos that belong to individuals, but a great majority of them have been cross posted from Pinterest, Facebook, The Fairfax County Public Library, and many other sources (some attributed, some not).

Can you see on a clear evening from up high in those high rises at Tysons which is the highest natural point in Fairfax County at 486 feet . Mount Murtaugh at the old West Ox dump is 556 feet high but a man made point.

I think I can see the Rt 50 gap at Paris Mt and the gap south at Thornton gap on Skyline Drive Rt 211 To the far extreme left on the horizon south of any rivers is the Land of Freedom Loving DAJAX

Who thinks if Fairfax County would build an observation tower at Mt Murtaugh and charge a penny for the 360 degree view they will be able to provide FCPS all they need in extra cash if you can see thru the concrete canyons in the way . The I-66 exit will be jammed packed on fall leaf colorful weekends if they do so they can scalp making it a five spot. They can call it "556 View ", sorry no 5.56 AR 15 ammo for sale.

Perhaps for my fund raising idea FXCO will let me install handgun vending machines with a 31 day background check wait for your gun to drop out of the slot so you cant also buy more then one a month.

Well, bless your little heart. We all create our individual reality from our perceptions and what we choose to filter, what we choose to see, and what we choose learn from and tolerate and accept.

Route 1 between Belvoir and Alexandria was moderately sleazy (and arguably still is in some regards). There were a lot pay day loan places, pawn shops, used car dealers that financed with extremely high interest rates, a couple topless bars, several dive bars, massage parlors. A lot of motor courts and bungalows. Typical of the seedier side of life associated the leeches doing business near military bases.

I remember a lot of marijuana in McLean during the 1970s. The McLean High School bathrooms and back hallways and surrounding grounds were generally a thick fog of the stuff in the mornings. No different than most other public schools anywhere else at the time, except maybe the demographic. A bunch of stoned privileged kids from elitist snooty households. Tacos and Jumbo Jacks from Jack in the Box, and Christmas decorations at Tyson's Corner. What more could a privileged kid want.

Fairfax County is an eclectic locale and has been for decades. Running the gamut as far as societal norms, or lack thereof, and the periphery of society as well. From the sleazy to the affluent. Sometimes just affluent sleaze given the political and government demographic. Highly transient populace too. It's part of the charm, and a lot of the nostalgia. Thus this thread.

Shout out and thanks to the older permanent residents of Fairfax County who actually contribute to this thread with their knowledge and memories and photos.

I went to elementary school with an Indian kid who's parents owned that hotel in the 1970s - they lived upstairs in the front portion of the hotel.

I think you're correct, Wednesday August 2 1972.
Here's why. The title line taken from the masthead in the top right corner reads, "The Evening Star and Daily News". This masthead appeared only for a few months after The Evening Star purchased The Washington Daily News, circa 1972. They rebranded as Washington Star News, and then The Washington Star. I delivered this paper in McLean about this time, as well as The Washington Post.

It could also be Wednesday August 8 1973, but it's unlikely. As I recall by August 1973 the masthead already changed to Washington Star News and was in the process of rebranding to The Washington Star.

Delivering papers in McLean in the early 70's?? That must have been a chore. I imagine is was fairly rural and some of those roads are pretty unforgiving. There has got to be some good stories from that!

McLean was mostly suburbia in the 1970s, with narrow neighborhood streets much like it is now. A lot of those homes have sold as tear downs more recently and replaced with McMansions built inches from the easements. Or townhomes and condos like what happened with Evans Farm Inn (loved that place, the restaurant and sitting duck pub; I still make spoonbread).

The most difficult deliveries were the two large older homes behind Franklin Sherman with their driveways off Old Dominion Drive, each home on the top of two large hills. It took about 15 to 20 minutes to deliver both houses by bicycle. Walking took a lot longer. It was harsh in winter. They are townhomes-condos now.

This was one of them, photo by Joel Sternfeld, its been posted here before, McLean VFW did a control burn on the house for training in '78.
https://iconicphotos.wordpress.com/2012/10/25/joel-sternfeld-mclean-virginia-december-1978/
https://www.phaidon.com/resource/joel-sternfeld-mclean-virginia-december-1978.jpg
https://www.phaidon.com/agenda/photography/articles/2017/january/23/what-do-joel-sternfelds-photos-say-about-america/

All the subdivisions South of Dolly Madison or Chain Bridge Road up to Kirby, and between Great Falls Rd and Old Dominion Drive existed then. As did Great Falls and some of Spring Hill to the north, also Pimmit Hills. The majority of homes were built in the 50s and 60s, with a few exceptions that were older,

The schools at the time in that area of McLean were Elementary Lewinsville, Franklin Sherman, Kent Gardens; Middle: Cooper and Longfellow, HS: Langley and McLean (and Oakton). The Pools and Tennis were: Mclean, Tuckahoe, and Kent Gardens (off Westmoreland past the Little League Ball fields, just before Longfellow Middle School, sort of near Haycock). Spring Hill existed too, to some extent (it was newer). Several of my customers were fairly well known in politics, or journalism, or literary circles, most were upper level government agency, or foreign embassy, or O-6 and above military.

You can see what it looked like in 1976 and other decades here:
http://fairfaxcountygis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html
The areas to which I refer are map sections 30-1, 30-2, 30-3, 30-4, 40-1, 40-2 and basically most of that vicinity. McLean HS is on the left edge of 30-4 if you want something to refer to as a landmark.

I'm just a transient with Fairfax County. Somehow it's a second home at times. Lived there a few years as a kid, then several times later in life for work or whatever. Three or four years here and there, then another a year or two, etc. I guess about 20% of my life has been in Fairfax County. These days I am sometimes in the area on occasion for a day or two, upwards to a couple weeks.

I have a lot of fond memories of NoVA and Fairfax County, but I'm afraid they would be boorish for the permanent residents who contribute here. I'm just a transient past resident with only a limited history in FC.

Ah yes, Drug Fair . My very first real job with a real pay stub was Drug Fair(as opposed to freelancing , mowing lawns). Pulling stock, unloading trucks and sweeping floors, every kid should do that once in their lives.

That was a different world back then though. The manager had no problem sending me (at 16 years old) to restock and straighten out the walk in beer cooler.

When I worked at Lums as a dishwasher we had a tap and would take it into the walk-in cooler to take "keg hits" as we called them. Good times!
Washing dishes, cleaning restrooms and floors at Lums was also a good experience for a teenager.

Any specific date on that Richmond Hwy address list? I would guess it as 1980-1981. Gray bought Drug Fair in roughly 1981 and started changing the signs in the couple years afterwards. I knew the guy who owned Tijuana Jail and I believe he bought the place roughly 1979 -1980. He sold it to bar j in the mid 80s.

Fanny Hills - Off Limits to Ft Belvoir military personnel by order of the Post Commander, just like Fancy Dancer and 1320.

I believe there was a 1320 in Springfield - Newington area too. One of the bartenders at Skinifatz danced there at the Springfield location (so she informed me one evening in a personal conversation). She was gorgeous, smart too, college classes through the week.

I never went in those places, e.g., Fancy Dancer. When I was stateside chilling at Belvoir between TDY assignments elsewhere in the world I was usually found in Skinifatz and Lazy Susan, Belvoir Grille, Frank's Hideaway (aka KC's Hideaway) Hillbilly Heaven, Old Town and Georgetown,

They misspelled Juggernaut Lounge ("Juggernaur") in the address list. It was the HoJo nightclub, with 70s to early 80s disco lounge glitz decor. I preferred Skinifatz in Occoquan, Annie Oakley's in Georgetown and Murphy's Pub in Old Town to Juggernaut.

There was indeed a 1320 Club in Springfield. It was in a "strip mall"...hahaha! Actually it was in the 1950's vintage Brookfield Plaza, on Backlick Rd. Just south of OKM Rd. The club itself was right next to a US Post Office, as I recall.

The one time I tried to go there it was closed so we went to the Paper Moon instead. Big mistake. A big football game was on and everybody in the bar was watching it. In the meantime the dancers kept up their their grind in the background with no one watching. It was kind of sad, really.

You sure about that picture being from Alexandria? IIRC, "Esso" was used in this part of the country in the pre-Exxon days.

It is a 1966 Ford Galaxie with white license plates

1965, 1966, and 1967 were the only years to stack the headlights.

My guess is that the car behind the barricade is a sky blue 1963 two-door Ford Falcon, exactly like the car I was driving at the time. I can't tell if it has the 144 cubic inch six, which was the engine in mine.

That's not me in the picture.

In Alexandria, we had a Murphy's five and dime at the intersection of King and Washington, and another in the Bradlee Shopping Center. You could enter the downtown store from either street. Both stores had a downstairs level too.

There's a Michael's craft store in the Bradlee Shopping Center now where the Murphy's was. I wish we had Murphy's back. I bought stuff there from time to time. Not so Michael's. Almost everything at Michael's is Chinese-made junk.

Is it possible that the people staying there post 1980 weren't using credit cards, so nobody really cared? A lot of those hotels on Lee Highway were used in the 80's and 90's by construction crews from West Virginia who came to Fairfax to work during the week.

That's very possible. I heard that Social Services was using the place for temporary emergency housing for people down on their luck. There were plenty of construction vehicles parked there over the last 25 years or so.

Yes that is correct. Many of the folks took chartered flights into Dumfries International Airport to see the movie.

TWA and Delta has special rates because they used DC-10s to reduce costs.

I suspect that many, if not most, participants in this thread are regular readers of the obituaries. There was one of note in the Washington Post for Saturday, December 14, 2019, in the lower right corner of page B5. It was a paid obituary for Jay Slocum, who died on December 11, 2019, at the age of 64.

Jay's father moved the family to northern Virginia so that he (the father) could work on the Blue Plains wastewater treatment plant being built over in DC. The obituary says that in the spring of Jay Slocum's senior year, a tornado came through and blew the roof off his high school. He attended three high schools that year. Jay Slocum went on to a successful career and retired at the age of 51. Nice work if you can get it.

The funeral is being handled by the Adams-Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden Street, Herndon, Virginia, 20170.
