Re: "What is going on in this Alexandria Virginia image?"

Hi. I would have replied sooner, but my place of employment, in return for paying me, expects me to perform "work."

That picture might have appeared in the November 1936 issue of the National Geographic magazine. This issue had an article called "Trains of Today -- and Tomorrow," by Jess Richard Hildebrand. You can see a little bit of it at https://books.google.com/books?id=4ggZAAAAIAAJ&q=national+geographic+trains+of+tomorrow. Sometimes you can read articles online, but National Geographic appears to have a solid copyright on this one. I tried looking a little this afternoon, but I couldn't quickly find either of my two copies of that issue.

The article had about three pictures of Potomac Yards. This one was taken at the Mutual Ice Company icing facility. It was located just south of the east end of the Monroe Street bridge. The bridge was a concrete affair. Jefferson Davis Highway and Monroe Street intersected at the west end. The bridge took vehicles over the two-train passenger main and then the tracks where southbound freight trains were assembled. You can see the pole line (telegraph wires) in the background. The passenger is at a slightly higher elevation than the freight tracks, so that errant derailed freight cars could not foul the passenger tracks.

At the east end of the bridge, eastbound traffic could go three way. A slight left would take you to Slaters Lane toward the Pepco electric plant, built in 1949, give or take. Going straight ahead would take you past Perrine's gas station (Gulf?) and toward Powhatan Street. A sharp right would put you on Henry Street. If you took the sharp right, you would go past the offices of Allegheny Airlines (in the early 60s). Next on your right was the Mutual Ice Company, or MICO. Its most recognizable structure was the water tank, painted red and white checkerboard (think Purina Chow) that kept it supplied with water. The water tank is still there, though it is now painted the shade of green found inside insane asylums and schools.

MICO took the water and froze it into big blocks of ice. Trains of perishable food -- fruits, vegetables, and meats -- would be assembled in the South. The perishable food was transported in refrigerated boxcars, or reefers. There were hatches at the ends of the roof where blocks of ice were put into the cars before the trains were dispatched from the South. The trains then headed up the Atlantic Coast Line or Seaboard to Potomac Yards. Along the way, the ice melted. The melt water dripped out through holes in the floor of the car. Every freight train stopped at Potomac Yards (PY). By the time the trains got to PY, it was time to replenish the ice. The reefers were sent over to the icing racks on the east side of the yard, where the operation depicted in the photograph was carried out.

This was long before mechanical refrigeration became practicable on the railroad. Once mechanical refrigeration was possible, there was no more need to stop the trains and replenish the ice. The next time you see the Tropicana train go by, notice the refrigerator unit at the end of each car. That spelled the end of MICO.

The picture is taken looking to the southwest. You can check old city directories in the historic room at the Barrett branch of the Alexandria Library, the one on Queen Street, for more information.

I remember driving over the bridge and seeing the icing racks. There was a shopping center between Powhatan Street where I used to be taken for my haircuts.

This is a great thread. I appreciate all the old photographs and the information in it. I hope this helps.

Keep up the good work.

"There was a shopping center between Powhatan Street where I used to be taken for my haircuts."

I meant, There was a shopping center between Powhatan Street and Henry Street where I used to be taken for my haircuts. It's been gone for 45 or 50 years. The city directories at the Alexandria Library can provide you with the names of the retailers that were there.

The Fruit Growers Express cars were built at the plant south of Duke Street, but these are cars in service.

A further thought: The closest car to the photographer is a Fruit Growers Express (FGEX) car. The next car, though, has a Great Northern Railway herald. It is a Western Fruit Express reefer. Hat tip, Google images for the ID. I had been thinking Pacific Fruit Express. These pictures will help:

https://www.protocraft.com/category.cfm?ItemID=243&Categoryid=21

The third car might be a Western Fruit Express reefer too, but the angle makes an ID difficult for that one.

Again, I love this thread.

Yes...at one time, this shopping center was to have been the "gateway" into ALexandria.

It is townhomes now, it is near Vaso's, which is housed in one of the old Dixie Pig buildings. Across the street and towards the route 1 bridge.

I believe it was designed by Musolino and Assoc's, very active architects.

Whoops. It's Monroe Avenue, not Monroe Street. All the east-west streets in that part of Alexandria are avenues: Glendale Avenue, Luray Avenue, Alexandria Avenue, Nelson Avenue, Monroe Avenue, Mason Avenue....

I don't know why I can't get that right.

I apologize for the error.

Two-track passenger main, not two-train passenger main.

Fantastic photo!

Notice the Fairview Motel on the right side of the photo, and the Masonic Temple.

From the cars and the licence plates, my guess is summer of 1956

On the left behind the station wagon is Penn Daw Vol Fire Dept back then . It was a major station with lots of action even that far back the "new one" built in the 60's and remodeled about 10 years back still sees lots of action with Rt 1 and the Beltway and WW Bridge calls.

No doubt that Corvair is getting a couple quarts of oil added.

Horrible oil leaks from those things.

Looks like a blue Dodge Charger in the photo as well.

Anybody remember the original intersection of Braddock road and 29/211? Long before New Braddock road came along. That white gas station across the street was the Merchants tire clearance center back when I was running those roads (1977- 1985). That little stone structure on the corner I think might have been the well pump house providing the Amoco station with water.

As I recall the Chantilly motel was directly across route 50 from the Chantilly cash n carry. Not sure about the A/C terminology. I think the motel was gone by the 80s.

Went to a lecture about two years ago on old houses in Fairfax County. The speaker said the porch on the front of Ossian Hall was added in the early 20th century to imitate the one at Mount Vernon. The speaker said several other homes in Fairfax did the same thing about that time, including the house off Wakefield Chapel that dates from the same era as Ossian Hall and is still there.

He and his cohorts set fire to Ft Hunt High School late December 1978. There is a thread on this forum about the fire, and Matthew Musolino has posted, and defended his actions with no remorse.

From a J G Whittier JHS alumni

"Here is an aerial photo of the original FCHS in 1948, my birth year.  in the background is newly built Tyler Gardens, now called Winter Hill.  That was part of the population explosion at the time.  The city's population was about 5,000 that year, reached 7,500 for the 1950 census, and reached 10,000 by the mid-'50s.  The surrounding portion of Fairfax County was growing by similar leaps and bounds".

Yep! I went to Whittier JHS on Marc Dr/Jaguar Trail for 7th & 8th grade, then went to 9th grade at the "original" FCHS at the corner of Hillwood @ Cherry in the City of Falls Church. Then, back to the future, finished up grades 10-12 @ the site of the newly updated and enlarged "old" Whittier JHS on Jaguar Trail, now the "new" FCHS!

I was in 7th grade at old Whittier JHS in 1964/65 when Fairfax County desegregated the public school system. This meant that some kids from the "white" Whittier JHS were now bused to the "colored" Luther Jackson JHS and vice versa. To say that many parents were upset would be an understatement.

At the new FCHS on Jaguar Trail he was a tall old white guy with balding white hair and a mustache named Mac he was there in 75 up probably earlier

Everyone remember the janitors, some aspired to become one and did such as Mark Warner US Senator (D) Va. that's how he started out his family was not well off.

Hard work never hurt anyone

How many got there drivers licenses there on Jaguar Trail with the judge and officer Cox giving the safety speech

By the way, in 1973 the minimum legal drinking age in Virginia was 21. The minimum age for beer and wine only wasn't lowered to 18 until 1974. In 1987, the minimum age for all alcholic beverages was raised to 21.

Great picture! I guess they weren’t expecting a population growth when they built that school.

The cars have white 1967 license plates, so my guess is early spring 1967. Notice the 7-11 in the background.

Note that the Chevy Wagon has it's wheels turn into the curb. Bet it was a 3 on the tree manual shift model.

Who is the guy on the roof of the library?

I think that's Vienna, not Fairfax. If you look at the windows, you can see the reflection of the buildings across the street, which were Chappell's Shell and an office building with very distinctive signage in front of it.

The guy on the roof was probably a county maintenance man.

The library was built on a hill. Same as the building on the street behind it, with the 7-11 facing the street and another use with an entrance facing the back parking lot. I guess that was a gully running down to the creek. The trees in front of the 7-11 in the first picture are gone in the 1976 picture.

The post office was located next to the library. I’m not sure if the post office was in the same building as the library but I remember parking off the side street and walking up the hill to the entrance on 123. Could you enter the library from around the back or was that a separate business?

Does anyone know where the post office before this one was located?

The post office is next to the library as seen in photo taken in 1976 . Look closely and you can see all of the mail trucks lined up in the parking lot. The parking lot across University Drive was employee parking for the post office.

The ARCO station was on the corner.

Great photos

Parallel parking a beast like that was a real trick, especially with a clutch, no side view mirror on the passenger side. In high school I had a after school job with a painting contractor who had me driving one of those but it was a Oldsmobile. I delivered paint and other supplies in that huge wagon. Imagine kids today having to park one of those things!

Yes, draft registration in the ground floor of the Ffx library! This would have been 1969 for me. I had totally forgotten about that!

Since they tore down all the trees at I66 and Rt123 you can easily see the Massey Building SLOWLY being dismantled. Did they build a dirt hill in order to get their crane high enough to reach the upper floors? Couldn't they have just used a taller crane? Confused....

Those evergreen trees look like they’re watching and consulting over the project.

Just how many truck loads of dirt DOES IT TAKE to make a taller crane?

Not the Derecho. That was 29 June 2012. The Potomac Mills sign was hit on 2 March 2018 from heavy winds. Yes, just last year! They had to wait a couple of days for the winds to die down before removing it on 4 March.

Its 190 some feet from the first floor of the Massey to the top that's a lot of stick on a crane to get up there , a hundred ton P&H might be a bit light so its easier to build a mole hill

DAJAX the Cook Who Knows it all Speaking of Mole Hills that brings up the Democrats impeachment of Trump that will fail like a hundred ton crane trying to pick up a 1000 ton load

If I was Bill Gates I would donate those special 350 -400 foot cranes with rescue baskets to many American and world Fire Departments in high rise cities to get people out of those tall buildings in fires like Bailys Tysons and more ...I only have a buck I'll leave in a firefighters boot soon at an intersection if they give me a sticker I PAID !

Bill Gates is NO ELVIS who is loved by millions and he will never be !

Hint BOS Fairfax Co you can play "Good" Bill Gates and get one for the FCFD , maybe 1 mil but you got it , all lives matter !

A bigger crane is more expensive, both to rent and to transport.

The one in the picture is already a wide load. Anything larger might require an extra lane.

That machine in the picture is not a crane, not by a longshot. It is a articulating boom lift. There is a huge difference. Cranes will likely come into play later in the deconstruction process and in the building of the new structure. Great pics!
