Here is another Harry Smith card. Notice it says "Air Conditioning optional". I guess people were a lot tougher in those days and A/C was considered a luxury.

That was before global warming, and temperatures in the DC area never went above 75. And no humidity.

No such thing as global warming, just weather trends that have been going on since the earth has had an atmosphere. Nice try though.

Temperatures in the D.C. did go above 75 and there was plenty of humidity. What we didn't have was the thousands of acres of concrete and asphalt that absorb and release the heat. This area used to have vegetation (mainly forests) that helped regulate the temperature. Why do you think that people left the cities on the east coast during the summer months? They went to the mountains, forests and beaches where it was cooler.

Spot on. A walk to your car in the Pentagon parking lot late at night after a hot summer day will make clear why nighttime temps are slow to fall in the D.C. Area. Back in the day, Dulles summer temps were five to as much as ten degrees lower than those closer in. This gap has steadily been closing as development density has now spread to Leesburg and beyond

The leaves are off the trees and the kids are wearing long sleeved shirts and pants. That certainly appears to be a Good Humor truck though. Curious.

The lack of sidewalks and curbs suggest somewhere other than Fairfax County.

It's not Colvin Meadows. Those houses were built around 1988 and are all brick. The land was pasture before they were built.

No, not Dress Barn--Pants Corral! I remember the dressing room doors. Used to be one in the Old Keene Mill Shopping Center, corner of Keene Mill and Rolling Rds, somewhere where Monty's Steak House is now. I bought many a pair of Levi's there. There was also a Drug Fair (now a Walgreens, I think) where we hung out at the restaurant after school eating french fries and drinking Coke. Wow, I can't believe how small town that sounds! That was before West Springfield had a McDonalds. The Cardinal Forest Plaza on the other side of Rolling Rd had the People's Drug.

The phones have the old Bell Telephone logo, which would've changed in 84 to Bell Atlantic, so it's before that. But honestly, I was in grade school in the early 80s and don't remember anyone ever wearing jeans like that. I'd say the pic is 1975ish or earlier.

What’s great is that it’s clearly a white american girl. Those were the good times. Nowadays if you went there you’d have some beaner trying to sell you tacos or some towelhead who ate camel meat for breakfast.

The good thing is that there are tons of them out there. If you wanted one you know you would have parts to keep it on the rode for at least your lifetime.

The building in the background is at the corner of Beaulah and Maple Avenue in Vienna. Looks exactly the same today. So Penguin Feather was where Anita's is? Cannot believe the uptight people in Vienna ever let a Penguin Feather operate within town limits.

Listen here, sonny. That Penguin Feather store is a music store and where I buy

This pic was posted earlier in this thread. I used to get my guitar strings from the penguin. They were kept on the top shelf right next to the Tokemasters and just above the rolling papers.

You asked about a postcard and the address and phone number on it. (And yes, the handwriting is horrible.)

I somehow figured it out. The city is written as "Cinti" (notice the dot over each "I") and there's a period after it. So, it's an abbreviation for Cincinnati.

So, obviously, the "O." refers to Ohio. This was back before the official two-letter state abbreviations were established, and I think "O." might have been pretty standard for Ohio.

About the phone number, you would only dial the "SO" in south, so "76" just like on cellphones now. And that means the number is: 765-5100.

The "SO", by the way, was known as an exchange, and actually referred (most times, if not all of the time) to a building in a certain area or district. One place I lived was in the "Jefferson" area, so numbers started with "53".

Happy dialing.

Further research brought this pic of that same guy. I wonder who he was. It's hard to believe that in those days you could light up a cigarette inside a retail store like the guy on the right is doing and nobody thought anything of it.

I believe the High's was where the Ramen/Sushi place is and the Newland's Glass was torn down and it is now the Capitol One Bank (across 123 from Jammin Java, Walgreens). Someone correct me if I am wrong, it's all becoming a blur!!!

And I thought my brother was so cool when he taught me the trick to put disc washer on an LP that has a bad scratch, leave it wet, and the needle will glide across the scratch and you barely hear it.

You are correct. And the year is 1976, which is when they painted the street lines red, white, and blue.

That IS cool, I remember the Boy Scouts painting some of the fire hydrants red, white and blue too. I was 12 years old.

Okay, this one is from the PWC down in Woodbridge but most any Fairfax boy that owned a boat surely remembers EZ CRUZ. They had all the parts and supplies you needed when you were ready to head out on the Occoquan.

Who would have thought at the time that turntables and albums would be so antiquated when we became our grandparents?

Love seeing those “old” cars of the ‘70s.

Thx everyone. So much fun to remember with others. Cic

I also noticed that neither the VW or Toyota Corolla have right sideview mirrors. By the way, my first car was a chocolate brown 1976 Toyota Corolla.

Back in the day of the dinosaurs, the right side mirror was an option.

A couple images from a exxon or esso gas station in Woodbridge which I believe is from the 1979 oil crisis that caused panic buying of gasoline. My family had a 77 chevy NOVA 4 door similar to the one at the bottom of the first picture.

I think the Treacherous Authors is currently a Five Guys.

I see a Zayre in the photo above, a store I would go to under duress. Something had to be on a great sale before I would subject myself to those horrible check-out lines...

Agree blanche...The Zayre's in Seven Corners was past it's prime in the 70's. There was Lafayette store in the same center that had some great things...esp on Washington's B-Day.

The Zayre I remember was off Edsall road next to BrenMar apartments in Alexandria. The place was kind of a dump but the prices were low. I remember standing in line at the checkout for at least a hour at Christmas time.

People bought cars with manual transmissions. A/C was a luxury in the car and home.

It was required to go into the restaurant to purchase the food. Very few 400lb fatties eating cheeseburgers.

Does anyone have pictures of the old Pinecrest Pool that was at the corner of Braddock and Elmdale?

It was bulldozed sometime around the time that the golf course was turned into all those houses early/mid 80s.

Thanks!

The lines are from the rationing. You could only buy on odd or even days depending on the last digit of your license plate, I think. I remember those lines.

It looks like its located where one of the ponds is now located.

It was the odd/even rationing that eliminated the lines within a few days.

That's bullshit.

People were filling up, taking the car home, sucking the gas out into gas cans, and going back to fill up again.

At the time of the late-70's gas crisis, I was working as a county health inspector. We drove our own cars on official business, then we were reimbursed for mileage. I had a special permit to exempt my car from the odd/even license number gas rationing.

There were some highly pissed off people waiting in line that thought I was "cheating."

That it was there and presto now its gone young un .

The reason they put the gargoyles up was that the county wanted to condemn the property 40 years ago when Fairfax started getting too big for its britches, uppity you know.

They wanted to put a Arthur Treachers in there to bring in tourist dollars for crisp batter fried fish, fries and ice cold Fanta for the visiting Californians bongs with a Jack In The Box from San Diego Way right across the street A Delight of two cult munchies the AT's fish and those greasy mystery meat tacos that solved the munchie problem

At least a restored car that you would have see in NOVA

DAJAX This ones a 72. 75 up were similar around 140 mph flat out .The California Highway patrol would not accept any car that would not hit 130 mph . Va was with them! So were most other state police and highway patrols. FCPD was very jealous of those VSP Plymouths ! Especially when they were passed at 105 when they were out on I 66 and 95 south in the middle of the night on a pursuit ! At graduation from the State Police academy in Chesterfield Co on Midlothian new troopers went to a large parking lot where their new car waited and that car was your car driven to your first assigned area and you kept it at home same as today and could drive it for small personal uses

When VSP troopers pull out on an interstate and intercept speeders , VSP can take down any Speed Kings ! Drive the posted limits and you'll have no issues . It can save your family's life first and yours too. The very worst of all worst wrecks are when children are involved ! And the horror increases if there is total negligence such as DWI or Reckless driving involved! Officers have feelings too very deep feelings that they don't show usually . I have quietly shed tears personally at some scenes when a child or young person was killed or their parent and sometimes very rarely both parents! ! Officers and firefighters/EMS are the ones who see it all up close and personal as well as the amber light wrecker drivers! Don't forget them! !

DAJAX Remember Virginia Law Changed July 1st 2019 When you see red blue or amber emergency lights slow way down or move over 1 lane. It can be a reckless driving charge today if you don't , very serious ! You really need a lawyer if you get one !

AND I will say just do it if some ones broke down as well or stopped . People forget the danger that exists along the side of a high speed highway when they get in jam with a breakdown or they are out of gas and get out of the car and don't pay attention to where there at trying to fix something

On an interstate I would cut ya some slack pals if your boxed in by traffic as slowing down on an interstate can be dangerous , but Im way over the hill and long gone and I did not write that law Natch! If I did I would have put language in to clarify the issue !

Nuff Said! More Old Pics! I see a hole with light ahead. Its the internet again!
